Cottage Living - Hill End, New South Wales by

Cottage Living – Hill End, New South Wales, Australia.

Featured in Preserving History

One of the beautiful bedrooms at Ackerman’s Cottage. Built by the Ackerman family in 1857, this dwelling is one of the oldest on display during Open Day. It is still lived in today by a 5th generation member of the Ackerman family. Photo taken with permission.

Ackerman’s Cottage is a carefully restored miners cottage in the Germantown section of the village.

Heritage Council of New South Wales

By mid 1851, alluvial gold was first found in the Hill End goldfields. The population of Hill End exploded following these early discoveries and, by the second rush in 1872, it was the largest inland settlement in the NSW colony. One of the most remarkable things about Hill End now is the virtual lack of development since the gold rush with almost all of the buildings dating back to the boom years around 1872 and it is this unique collection of buildings, relics, artefacts, structures, archaeological sites and landscape elements which are, individually and collectively, of outstanding architectural, aesthetic and research value.

Well Marilyn I looked at this and it looks very familiar, yes to my bedroom! My wife is a fanatical decorator and she has me well trained in maintaining all the cushions etc in their respective places. Even the overhead ‘valance’ is there! Lovely shot, you have captured the look of yesteryear very well!

  • Thank you so much Mike – Really appreciate your comment! Glad to hear that you have been trained well!! lol!! :o)
