In His Hands – Baby Tassie Devil
Featured in Tasmania
Came across a similar picture while touring Tasmania. Coloured and worked in Photoshop.
The Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) cannot be mistaken for any other marsupial. Its spine-chilling screeches, black colour, and reputed bad-temper, led the early European settlers to call it “The Devil”. Although only the size of a small dog, it can sound and look incredibly fierce.
While now found only on the island of Tasmania, they once roamed widely across Australia and on islands around the coast.
Unlike most other pouched mammals, they carry up to four young in their “marsupiums”. Up to 15 neonates – new born – only the size of a grain of wheat are born, but just four can be fed, so it is a case of survival of the fittest from the start of life. The gestation is an amazingly short 19 days.
In May 2009, the Federal Government uplisted the Tasmanian devil to the ‘endangered’ category under the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

This is beautiful. We came across two tiny babies that had been hit on the road. So horrible.Had to stop and take them of the road.
Thank you! How sad to hear!
