One of Cairo’s most popular tourist attractions is the Citadel. It is one of the world’s greatest monuments to medieval warfare, as well as a highly visible landmark on Cairo’s eastern skyline.
Built between 1176 and 1182 AD, the Citadel fortress provides a panoramic view of Cairo from the Moqattam Hills. The complex includes the famous Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Aly the founder of the late Royal Family on the throne of Egypt.
It is now a preserved historic site, with mosques and museums.
