The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and roads that span the Tagus River near Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts), with a total length of 17.2 km (10.7 miles), including 0.829 km (0.5 miles) for the main bridge, 11.5 kms (7.1 miles) in viaducts, and 4.8 km (3.0 miles) in dedicated access roads. Its purpose is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon’s other bridge (25 de Abril Bridge), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon.

I’ve been there only twice. Once during the day and another during the night, and both are great to pass there. In th night you can seel all the lights of the city and all the cities around and all the boats that sail the river, it’s a very cool sight! Funny facts: The Lisbon marathon starts here, great oportunity to cross the bridge walking and take some amazing shots! For the inauguration of this bridge in 1997/8 it was organized a lunch on the bridge that was later on a world guiness record as the longest table ever and the biggest lunch in the world. I cannot remember if the table was actually the same lenght as the bridge, but I remember it was huge… About the photo, once again, you have a very good one! :)

  • Thanks so much Jony for this wonderful information. I would have loved to have been there to see that! Here are the facts from this Link – The world record for the largest dining table was set when some 15,000 people were served lunch on the bridge as part of the inauguration celebrations.
    Appreciate! :o)
