King consort Ferdinand II developed Pena National Palace as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family in 1839. He commissioned German Ludwig von Eschwege to design the palace in the romantic style – built between 1842 and 1854. Ferdinand took great interest, stipulating that vaulted arches and medieval and Islamic elements be included.
