King consort Ferdinand II developed Pena National Palace as a summer residence for the Portuguese Royal Family in 1839. He commissioned German Ludwig von Eschwege to design the palace in the romantic style – built between 1842 and 1854. Ferdinand took great interest, stipulating that vaulted arches and medieval and Islamic elements be included. Ferdinand designed this ornate window for the main facade himself, based on a Manueline window in the Tomar Monastery.
