A very poignant medal – especially on Anzac Day – 25th April.
My Grandfather served in WWI in which he sustained severe injuries (he couldn’t speak or hear for over six months). It makes me think how lucky I am that he survived and that my Grandmother wasn’t sent one of these medals.

This medal was issued to the widow of World War I Soldier Paul Allen.

Familiarly known as a “Dead Man’s Penny” – bearing the soldier’s name and the motto ‘He Died for Freedom and Honour’.

Port Arthur Museum, Tasmania, Australia.
