For a dramatic spread of colour in summer and autumn Dahlias are hard to beat. They are named after the Swedish botanist, Dr Anders Dahl, and come from the family Asteraceae, which is part of the daisy family. These wonderful flowers originated in the mountain ranges of Mexico, Guatemala and Columbia, before becoming popular throughout the world.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different cultivars and hybrids of Dahlias and about 30 species. This tuberous-rooted perennial plant is characterised by the different flower types. Dahlias come in many lovely shades including bi-colours.
This is a stunner Blossom, a cactus dahlia. I used to be not so keen on these plants, as I was influenced by childhood memories of lemon ones harbouring heaps of earwigs. In recent years they have seen such a variety of colours and forms I have changed my mind. Also I read that Monet had a number of them in his garden (red ones). They certanly provide a wealth of colour over a long flowering period. ~ Anni xxx
Stunning image Blossom! Dahlia’s are such an awesome flowers to capture there is so many beautiful colours and styles in them now, I just love them too….but it wasn’t always like that I was like Anni when ever you looked in a dahlia flower rest assured there were always earwigs in them but they seem to have moved house now!
