Spotted Mountain Grasshopper
Spotted Mountain Grasshopper (Southern pyrgomorph)
Ben Lomond National Park, Tasmania, Australia.

The Spotted Mountain Grasshopper generally refers to one of a number of types of alpine grasshopper – Monistria concinna, or Southern pyrgomorph. It occurs in eight different forms, each with its own distinct colour, which is likely to be an adaptation to its particular environment. The species itself occurs on the east coast from Northern New South Wales to Victoria and Tasmania.
The ability of these grasshoppers to tolerate freezing conditions is attributed to an anti-freeze type substance called Sorbitol that has been found in the haemolymph (blood) of these individuals. The majority of insects do die when temperatures reach below freezing i.e. less than 0 degrees as they are deficient in this substance.
