Sculpture of a Southern Right Whale
Sculpture of a Southern Right Whale
Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek (the most Southern town in Australia), Tasmania, Australia.
The life-size, three month old Southern Right Whale sculpture by Stephen Walker is a poignant reminder that whale calves once frolicked in Recherche Bay. Whalers harpooned calves first as their distress calls kept adults close.
Please visit the Sea_Shepherd’s_Website for an insight into their campaign on saving Whales.

Inscribed on a plaque beside this sculpture are these words:
Celebration of the Southern Right Whale
Conception, birth and nurture, far beyond our human scale.
This three month old calf begins a Southern Ocean journey to feed, to play, to live. This yearly cycle began five million years ago.
This rhythm of leviathans we witness now as these tender tactile animals return to our waters every year.
Sculptor, Stephen Walker, December 1995.
