The Rattle of Bones & Freedom of Flight

There will be times when life will rattle your bones
And bend you backwards, trying to break you in half
Yes, break you it will, if it can
Yet, my boy, I beg: stand your ground
When they try to rise against you, blow them down
This is why we fight
So that when we die we die free

Know this, son
The source of this rattling can come from the place you least expect
And say what they may, trying to break your will they are
Snap back with the sound of cannon
Declare you will to fight to the death
Cast off your fetters, be free, son

Then, let us see whose bones rattle
When we stand out ground, when we grind their prevarications into what they are
Show them who can fly like a bird and who ineptly shuffles after you in their self-imposed fetters

Fly home, son
I will protect you with every last ounce of blood
More importantly, we will rejoice in the casting of our chains, singing the song of freedom
Like eagles released from an aviary,
Flying to the highest heights we will fly, laughing all the way
Laugh the entire time we float on the free currents of the wind
That’s why we fight, boy-o:
For freedom, love, and laughter
We will experience it all
And when we do, life will rejoice with us

The Rattle of Bones & Freedom of Flight by

Many of the metaphors of this piece were inspired by The Decemberists, as yet unreleased CD, The King Is Dead.

I came rather late to poetry and even later to photography. I have graduate degrees in philosophy. I realized sometime ago that nearly all of my work makes some sort of implicit argument, and it often makes rather esoteric references to philosophy. Sorry: not trying to be turgid. It’s what I know, and it what Pan whispers into my ear.

You may find my newer, more formal photography at: http://rbgphoto-rusty.blogspot.com/
Thanks, Rusty

Hey Mr. B, you got my curiosity going now based on your narrative of “Many of the metaphors of this piece were inspired by The Decemberists, as yet unreleased CD, The King Is Dead.” I must look into this music. As for your write: STRONG, HONEST, MOVING, POWERFUL, SOULFUL, HEARTFELT, BEAUTIFUL and more. Cheers!, Lisa =) XO

  • Thank you, dear. As for the Decemberists CD, you may find it at www.npr.org. Simply look under programs, music, and find Music Cafe. It’s a great CD.

  • You can now download, The King is Dead by the Decembrists, on Amazon for $7.99. You should also check out Band of Horses, Infinite Arms, which is one of their $5.00 specials this month in the Alternative section. It’s one of the best CD’s of last year, other, perhaps The Brothers, and The New Pornographers. xo, me

Somewhat speechless here. Every word touched me deeply.
There will be times when life will rattle your bones
And bend you backwards, trying to break you in half

You’re telling me. The power and strength in your words have come from the screen and filled my room. I thank you for this. (I thank you for much. Some day we will converse.)

  • Hi Summers,
Thank you, for your thoughtful comment. We all dream of our words touching another, in one way or another. I hope that you have found happiness or a way towards it through these words. It is clear that they touched you, which pleases me. Feel free to drop me a b-mail at anytime. I’d love to converse with you. Thank you, again. Cheers, Rusty
