many thanks!!!. a quick update for anyone interested – this is a cape eagle owl and this photo was taken in the drakensberg, south africa. sadly the cape eagle owl is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. they stand 48-58cm tall and weigh 900-1800g. absolutely beautiful birds.
to give you an idea of how close he was this shot was taken with a 17-40mm lens handheld. cheers

My husband and I were in a nature park once…heard a ruckus from a flock of crows and went to investigate. The next thing I know this low flying Great Horned Owl swooped down out of the trees and was heading right for me. At eye level with me….big beautiful yellow eyes starring me straight in the eye. I just stood there mesmerized…camera in hand and couldn’t take the shot. For a moment there I thought it was going to smack into my head…then at the last minute it just cleared me. The entire encounter only took a few seconds, but I was dancing on cloud 9 for a week :)
