That’s a sweet story! My mom feeds around 9 hedgies in her yard each summer. They would come and nip at our toes when we cathered in the garden on summer evenings. They’re such a joy to have around! Hedgies are nocturnal, so they most of the day. They have poor eyesight and relay on their keen sense of smell and hearing. They know their family and can be handeled, but if you make them scared they lift up their spikes and poke you! It hurts a little, but not much. They feel like hamsters, no spikes on their belly. Our Daisy Mae gets bathed and manicured, we handfeed her treats and she’s very friendly with us. She often falls asleep in our laps on even hands. When she’s happy or excited, she squeeks and purrs.

Thank you! Daisy is four years old. We got her when she was about three months. She eats hedgie-gibble from pet store, seeds and fruit, berries, boiled chiken, mealworms and crickets. She can be held and kissed by us, but she is shy towards strangers. She is a delightful little critter! =)

Sadly, that is happening here, too. Hedgies are not the easiest pets to take care of, and people don’t do enough research to make sure a hedgehog will be a good choise for them. >:(
