How old is your daughter? Hedgies are not the best option for little ones, they are prickly. They huff and puff if they are scared or startled, and it hurts a bit. Their upkeep takes about 30 min to an hour a day. Their cage, bowls and running wheel require daily cleaning, that’s an absolute must, since hedgehogs poop a lot. My Daisy Mae uses a litterbox, but not all hedgies learn that. I still clean her cage daily. Hedgehogs need regular bathing and nail clipping. Not always easy. You also should have an exotic pet specialist looked up if you decide get a hedgie. You’ll have to remember that thedgehogs are nocturnal. If your daughter is under 10, I would choose a hamster or gerbil instead. They are soft, and also require less work. Good luck and thank you for your comment!

Great! If you have a hedgehog rescue group in your area, you could take her to meet some hedgies and see how it goes. My daughter was 12 when I got Daisy. She took care of her for a month and then I had to step in because she “forgot” “was busy” “too tired” ...lol!! Hedgies live about 5 yrs, so it’s not too long of a commitment, but it still is work. The up-keep is not too costly, mainly the initial purchases of the cage, an igloo for the critter to sleep in, a running wheel ( a must) and some sturdy bowls for food and water. Vet visits cost dearly….Hedgehogs can run 5 miles a night so they absolutely need the wheel, and also fresh water must be always available. They eat hedgie kibble, small mealworms, waxworms and crickets, (pet store stuff) fruits and berries. And they poop. A lot. Buy a little litter box and newspaper-pellets, the hedgie might learn to use it. I line Daisy’s cage with newspaper and she uses Viva paper towles for bedding in her igloo. She takes them in and out, and makes a nice nest with them! I provide her fresh bedding every day.
If you have dogs, they may want to kill the hedgie. Cats will just avoid the hedgie, except of course my Noodle – he just loves Daisy Mae. Lolll!
If you seriously want a hedgie, buy a book or do a lot of research online so you will make an educated decision. Good luck! =)

Yes indeed. Our beardie Pancake lives cage-free and spens most of her time on this pillow basking. She is down for brumation for a couple of months now, but by February she should be up and about again. She also is housebroken. ( we live in South Florida)
