Art and the masses

Creating something comes from within us, and so it is in actuality a little piece of us when it is produced. The creative process, the expertise with our chosen medium, the final touches – all are rewarding and make us smile as we deliver what we have made to the masses.

I am quite happy with the comments I receive. While I don’t submit my art just for comments, they are nice. I like sharing, and always think that, when I find something I’ve done to be enjoyable to me, that others might find it enjoyable to them as well. I’m happy when they take the time to tell me that they looked and liked what they saw.

Now don’t take this next comment in the wrong way. I just don’t understand the why of it, and maybe never will. I’m not making the comment here for anything spiteful (because I won’t mention any names) or to try and generate anything negative. Anyway, here it is.

I fail to comprehend why someone who is “popular” here (or any place similar to here) gets glowing comments from their submissions that are, at best, average.

I’ve seen, and commented on, some little-known artists work here that I thought was above average. A little encouragement, I think, goes a long way. Plus I think that we all would like to know that someone looked at what we created and thought it was good. While I think that we don’t create JUST for approval, it’s nice to know that someone in the community of artists finds what we have done to be worthy of a comment.

But commenting on something that is average with glowing words of praise I have never been able to understand. High praise for a Rembrandt stick figure just because it was done by Rembrandt? Why? It’s a stick figure. No fine example of what they COULD create.

Anyway, now I’ve said something about it, and if you have read this and have some thoughts on the matter I would be eager to read them.

Interesting reading! I know what you mean…... I think maybe it’s a bit like buying your favourite band’s new album without hearing it first – you trust, and very often do find, that it will be worth listening to, even (or especially) if you have to listen to it several times before you can see its virtue.

There’s such a LOT of art here! Generally, it’s found by networking because that’s mainly how this site works and I suspect people may be to some extent being kind to their friends. You have to take it in little bits or its overwhelming and very time-consuming!

Personally, if there are loads of comments already I tend not to leave one. When I’m voting I try very hard NOT to see who the artist is and NOT to look at comments or recently voted for before I cast my vote. This isn’t easy! I wonder if there’s a way they could blank those things out.

Anyhow, I’m beginning to wonder, and wander!! Hope this helps!
