Fading Light

Fading Light

This was probably the best sky of the year across the Moray Firth and I missed it! A bank of lenticular clouds had been blown across from the mountains North of Inverness and produced a stunning light show as the sun set. I only managed to capture this image by ramping up the ISO and dashing about like a mad thing looking for foreground subjects that never really materialized. No time for a tripod either and no filters. The best of the light had long gone. This was taken almost an hour after sunset.

The moral? Well always plan ahead and be there on location in plenty of time and scout beforehand and know where the tide is when shooting seascapes. I knew all of these things. I should have know better.

There will be other skies but this for me was definitely the one that got away.

I’ve gotta say Jim…despite the fact that you sound disappointed, I find this image absolutely beautiful!!! I love how the darker bottom half of the image makes the blues, oranges and golds of the sky ‘pop’. And who needs a ‘foreground subject’ when you’ve got that stunning ‘block formation’ sitting perfectly on a ‘third’ grid-line. A stunning image in my eyes :)

Thank you Angie. You’re too kind. Really appreciate your great comments.

You have certainly made the best of what you had at the time Jim, and for me it works well. I can certainly understand your annoyance at yourself…been there, done that…but whilst it may be a high ISO the noise levels seem reasonably low. Anyhow, congratulations on the Feature, it is still a worthy image and one which made you think and act on the spur of the moment.

  • Jim Robertson replied

Thanks David. You’re right there’s always a learning curve and mostly a silver lining :)
