Autumn Firth

Autumn Firth

The Moray Firth. Taken from Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland.

I’ve never really been a fan of HDR images. Most of them seem unreal to me. In saying that I have been playing with Photomatrix Pro for a while. Anyway, earlier this evening I was again inspired to revisit HDR after viewing this image by James Coard.

What you see is a 4 shot HDR generated via Photomatrix. It was then tweaked in Nikon Capture NX2 and Photoshop.

Many thanks for the inspiration James.

This is beautiful, Jim, and the HDR just increases the subtle tonings without becoming unreal. Excellent work!

    Thank you very much Bev

  • James Coard

    James Coard

Great stuff Jim. HDR can get a bad name but until camera manufacturers increase dynamic range on sensors this is a very useful method to reclaim some of those lost tones. This shot looks natural and seems like the grad filter has done all the work! More please!!

  • Jim Robertson replied

Hi James. Thanks for your great comment. Yes better sensors would be great but I doubt that I could afford them :) Right now I’d settle for full frame :)) We’re getting some great skies here just now with beautiful cloud formations coming over from hills north of Inverness I think. Thanks again for your inspiration James.

Great shot Jim and have to admit to being a photomatix fan. Not a fan of over done ones though. It can produce nice realistic pics too. On another note I got a Hi Tech 10 stop filter and cant wait to have some fun on the beach with it!

  • Jim Robertson replied

No need to wait for light with a 10 stop Fraser. What are you waiting for! :))) Thanks for your comment

Lovely shot Jim. HDR is something I have tried as well and find that it works better with static shots rather than movement. Though in saying that this is good. Its not 4 seperate exp though is it.

  • Jim Robertson replied

Hi Derek. Many thanks for your kind comment. Yes 4 shots all at AP of f22 and speeds of 1.3sec,1.6sec,3secs and 5 secs.

. .yes I agree with James a very natural look, I feel one of the effects of H D R that has persuaded me not to go there yet has been the rather unatural and contrived results in some cases . . but not here! . . very well worked!

  • Jim Robertson replied

Thank you Mike. I agree and don’t really see the thinking behind unnatural results. If one can extend dynamic range without creating a monster then HDR is fine by me.

I love the lavender highlights of the sea mists rising and drifting amidst the stones and their lovely textures in the foreground with the play of golden sunlight glowing on the horizon as it casts lovely patterns of colour on the clouds….. It is a very beautiful sunset scenic.

Oh, and I was going to tell you also I too am not a fan of HDR unless it is a very artists touch and your post work on this lovely image is wonderful as it still appears quite natural. Beautiful work Jim. What time is it where you are ?
