Death to the innocent

I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
you told me not to drink, Mum
So I had a Sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
the way you said I would,
That I didn’t drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
and your advice to me was right
as the party finally ended,
and the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mum
something I expected least.

Now I’m lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,"
Mum, His voice seems far away.

My own blood all around me,
as I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
“This girl is going to die.”

I’m sure the guy had no idea,
while he was flying high,
because he chose to drink and drive,
now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mum
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mum
tell daddy to be brave,
and when I go to heaven,
put “Daddy’s Girl” on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
that it’s wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I’d still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mum
I’m getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
and I’m so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me Mum,
as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say I love you, Mum
So I love you and good-bye.

Death to the innocent by

This isn’t my work but it is the best poem I have read.
and I will heed it’s warning as do all my friends!

And this year my friends and I did a movie of it for school with me playing the lead in the poem’s story and my Mum playing my character’s mother. We did a dramatic adaptation of the story in this poem and then at the end Mum sits on the front porch reading a “note” [I guess it should have been holding a teddy wondering what had gone through my mind last or something – perhaps the policeman took down this poem as the last words my character spoke] with me saying this poem over the filming of her slowly crumpling into tears.
[Mum was really good she had us all crying at the end!]

If someone would be kind enough to find out the true owner of this work please tell me! thank you

I remember you leaving this for me to find
I remember the tears and the desperate heartache it evoked in me
I wanted so much to hold you forever and protect you from everything
And then I realised it was also your way of saying to me – hey mum I’ll be fine I’m not stupid!
    and you definitely are not!
I couldn’t be prouder than I am of you and each of your siblings
No wonder my love in you will never die no matter what!
    Be happy my baby Boo!
Love you first! – your Mummmmmmmmieeeeeee! xoxoxoxxoxox

This poem must be quite famous – as I’m positive I’ve seen it before somewhere.

Very tragic events. It’s a shame some people are irresponsible, and that others have to suffer for that.

Hi Boo, yes this is a very sad poem……it’s like I always say to my boy when he says he drives carefully……I remind him that he might, but other’s don’t…..so to watch out for them and never trust another driver to do the right thing. Hon, I looked this up and it says no one knows the author of this poem…..I guess it’s just one of those mysteries….and probably better that way….it’s like a poem sent from heaven to remind us to be responsible for our lives so that we don’t hurt others. Lovely poem…..and so kind of you to share another’s work with us…..very kind. xxx

I too want to see the film – I’m sure i looked shocking! lol and yep I should have held a teddy to cry over – that way the idea that I had no idea what your last thoughts were would make the poem more effective!
But Yes ok I liked how I acted in it ☺
Thank you for giving me that chance to prove to you and to your siblings & friends that I do know what I’m talking about when I coach you guys in your performance endeavours.
