she is a Chai-walli…..in Hindi, this means the one who sells tea( chai). This lady has this make shift tea stall, right on the sidewalk of a busy street in Nagpur.Just two steps off the provision store I frequent for my daily needs. After a number of visits and sly mobile snaps and a dozen of cold stares from this woman, I think , I got this painting right. She never knew, she was the subject of my stretched canvas in my studio…! what attracted me most about her was her ensemble of broken bricks and slabs garish pink stool, with that late morning shadow texturizing them. And of course, the ambiance of a cool lounge her tea stall offers to her customers.( by the way, this work was exhibited under the title THE LOUNGE, in a a national level art contest, in Mumbai.. in 2008.
The backdrop is a cacophony of sound and color, with moving buses, cars, smoke spewing auto rickshaws, two wheelers , men and women etc.. I whitewashed them in order to make this lady stand out in the crowd!
