"Mrs. Katie"
The road to my Mother’s house was rather uneventful.
Same flowers, same cracks in the sidewalk. I usually just
kept my head down while walking..nothing much else to do.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to Mrs. Katie. I’d pass by,
and she’d smile in her sweet way, that left me feeling warm.
After a while, I thought it only natural to return her smile.
We began greeting each other & I even stopped to
ask how she was doing from time to time. She was living in
a group home for the eldery and those that needed care.
One day, I asked Mrs. Katie if I could take her picture, so I could
carry her smile with me..(I was getting ready to move). She kindly said yes, and began primping here and there..tugging at her dress.
She told me she was a retired school teacher-
poor Mrs. Katie, she didn’t know her wig was on sideways and I didn’t have the heart to tell her, nevertheless, she smiled her sweet smile and shared it with me. That day stands out in my mind even to this day, as one of the finest days of my life. You see, Mrs. Katie was senile..and most of her childhood years and earlier life had been stolen away by the onset of dementia. She didn’t have much left.
But she smiled..
