Dry point Etching
Printed on Japanese Paper
chine cello

This is STAGE 1 of this print. I have not etched out all of the work as yet. Today I had to do a quick print to see where I was going with it. I decided to experiment with papers, inks and tissue paper. I really liked the affect I got with this. I intend taking it further. You should see Stage 2 with this print by next week. I am teaching it to the whole class and it was a bit of a hit and miss class. I am hoping we all have better results next week.

This is a portrait I am working on of my daughter. She has just turned 13 and is an amazing musician. She plays guitar, piano, clarinet, saxophone, and drums. She also sings and is loves to perform. She is a great kid.

This print is inspired by Picasso’s sketch of his wife at the time. Francis Gilot.

I just noticed the treble clef on her necklace! Nice touch! I bet she really does have one like that!

  • Thanks Heather, I had to post this in reverse because I scratched the image into acetate and printed it up , only to find out the treble cliff comes out backwards. So, I have had to scratch it into a swirly sort of necklace, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to frame it. Complicated I know but when you do printmaking you have to actually do everything in reverse for printing. Thanks for noting that and for your lovely comments. Billy

Congratulations! You’ve been featured in Finks of Inks!

  • Thanks LisaMM for the Feature. I have been playing with this image all week. Scratched more out of the acetate and am inking up to print again on Monday. I hope it looks better. Thanks for the feature. Billy

Really cool portrait in many ways. I love the loose application of colors and the textures in the background. The body language is so perfect for a girl this age (I have two).

  • Thats so funny Ken, yes, she is 13 and suddenly aware. I know that because we walked the stores for four hours looking for red jeans! I have been photographing her since she was born relentlessly and I think she knows how to strike a pose for sure.
