Please NEED HELP - Oil painting problem - NOW with examples of work.

Can anyone help me paint or give me any tips on painting a tablecloth in a still life. Its your standard set up. I have been painting it for 3 weeks now and so far its been so much fun. Today I did the foreground standard blue and white checkered cloth for the 10th time. I mean, how hard could it be?>????

I am soon to finish this oil painting and move on to what I like doing best, the female form…but meanwhile, I must finish this still life challenge. Feel free to post any pictures you have done similiar. I would like this to be a teaching journal in case anyone else ever has the same problem.

Thanks Billy

Hi Billy. Are you having problems with the perspective of the checkers in the tablecloth? If so I could help you out. Just have to work out how and maybe an image of the work would help. Can send via email if you wish. Just let me know.
    Regards Kerryn

Is it the textures of the table cloth you’re having trouble with? Perhaps try some shading to add depth? Don’t know until I see the work.

Here is an article that contains the answer to the perspective problem of drawing a checker board receding into the distance. Hope it helps.

Ok, I am putting some really dark showdows in and am going to let it dry over night and then tomorrow add the really white. Then I am going to say its finished. I have blocked in the dark showdows. Now its time to STOP, and do some family living…..perhaps shower, maybe brush my teeth and give it a rest. Thanks Daze for helping me with the whole thing. B

Hey BIlly have sent you a separate RB email as my reply was too long for here. Best with it all. Nearly there! And yes, having a good break from it is always my own advice too when feeling swamped, too enmeshed and cloudy! Cheers.

Billy, I saw what you said to lazydaze, and I would have suggested exactly what you said you are planning to do. I see how mature the rest of the still life is… it is awesome…

Maybe work on the tones by doing some quick turp washes in certain areas (i.e. dark blue area, light blue area), to get an idea of where the shades are. Then paint, perhaps? The cloth looks alright, but maybe you need to focus on the blue tones then the details? Hope this helps!

oK, i have redone it, but this time I don’t think the photograph is doing it justice, must photograph and re-do tomorrow. It does look a lot better then this. I have done the t.towel and made the lemons stronger and changed the colour of the back decking. Billy

My gosh Lady… In my opinion, all three of these are gorgeous. Each one offers delight . for example the Glass in the middle one looks so crystal-like. and I enjoy the other texture on the table. Also the middle piece is so vibrant with Light.

And then in the bottom piece it seems as if the glass the hydrangea is in is like a real milk glass. sort of a period glass piece. I adore the cloth very much…

I like how you have honored all the items in this.
