Hi to all pastel medium redbubblers. I am spending a lot of time with this precious drawing of Amy. I am going to call it “Amy’s Travels” and I am hoping to make this piece shine with the pastels. Here is my work so far. I am asking for handy hints, useful advice and anything you have learnt about pastels. Thanks Billy.

ANOTHER DAY OF PASTELS…..

The work is going very well so far, what particular advice would you like.
The ultimate trick I guess will be what you will apply on the figure to create a great deal of depth.

Yes, frightened to touch the figure so far…...depth is my problem, color not so much. I guess I am asking how to create depth…good guess…billy

I can see that you are already approaching the illusion of depth by creating more details as you get closer to the figure. The distant hills are blurred and are formed by the shades, the middle ground has currents of lines to create the idea of depth. So far you’re going very well.
I find that in the foreground, if you reduce the merging in of colours and apply them side by side will help. So avoid the same amount of smudging and focus on textures of her skin and hair. I hope this helps in some way.

Yes this does help and I wouldn’t have known to do that…ok, I understand. Dont blend the same as the background, start to smudge less and starting making small marks for detail, this will bring the foreground closer. Yes yes yes, thank you …BIG THANK YOU….will post again in a few days with progress report. BillyLEE

I agree with Jedika…put the colours side by side and don’t blend as much, maybe some scumbling to add texture and add other tones for liveliness, volume and depth, and to give a feeling of strength and life to the figure…

looks like you are doing a fine job so far. I can’t wait to see the finished work.

Hello Dear Billy
If you realy want to do pastells, check out ‘Maxwell Wilks’ pastels, I think he is the best pastelist I know of..
His work can be found in the Jenny phian’s gallery Frankston, or check him out on the net, but to see his originals will make you screem with wonder.

I use a variety of pastels from soft chalk to oil … by far my favourite are NeoPastel by Caran D’Ache ….. they are oil technically but are so blendable and unlike some of the more expensive oil pastels they are not overly soft… marking everything in site! (lol)
2 examples of my work using neopastel

Wow your work is wonderful I havn’t heard of those pastels, I wander if you can get them in Australia…yes I am scared of the oil pastels because I cannot control the mess. I will look for the Neopastel, thanks for helping me out. Billy
