Lady in a Landscape

This is a pencil drawing all in HB pencil. I will later add other pencil marks to give it more depth. For now this is where it is. I have 6 drawings to complete for Semister one. This is no.1 and I have to do 5 more. So for now this is done. If at the end of the semester I have time I will add to this and then repost it . For now this is Amy our redbubble Amy’s Profile member and she was my muse for this work of art. Its an A1 drawing so its large scale. Thanks for looking. BillyLee

UPDATE – 13/7/08

Ok, I am desperately trying to pastel this drawing in…usually I ink and watercolour first and finish with pastel, but this is the first one I will be pasteling ONLY…Its hard…any tips anyone. Billy

Hey thanks you guys, will be interesting to see or hear what people have to say to it….as art teachers don’t say much, mine said , “mm I like this, needs more depth though” and that was it, How do you get the depth…I just told him it wasn’t finished yet, but will have to get more depth somehow. Drawing people , opionins needed. Ta. B

more depth? maybe darken just behind the lady, the base of the trees and darken her hair at the back . oh good grief though, if you like it ,don’t muck it up …be careful. although your experience with prints comes out because wood cuts etc are flat?? no experience doing them here, just observing.
sometimes after teachers say that you go and alter it and then you get told , oh I liked it anyway. [grump grump]

  • Belinda "Billy... replied

Ginny, I will write that down in my note book what you said and I will do just that. Don’t worry I will go lightly and darken those bits just a tad….will let you know how it works, I appreciate the help because I am going to finish this drawing one day, and spectacular it will be!

  • missmilly

    missmilly

I don’t think it needs more depth! It is working ver well as it is! What I would do is play around with it digitally, experiment a bit before you alter the original! Great work! Milly

  • Belinda "Billy... replied

Great Idea Missmilly, I will do just that…..then see how it goes. Thanks…will let you know. B

  • Sorina Williams

    Sorina Williams

    Looks great!!!!

I agree with Missmilly, play with it in Photoshop before you draw more. You might not like the “deep” version. I believe that more contrast at the front (Amy + trees beneath) would give more depth. Good luck!

PS Teachers are not always right. :)

  • Belinda "Billy... replied

Ok Sorina Sorina, I will write that down also. This is great, I love getting advice from my art buddies. I will write that in my notes also….and another question for you or anybody else, pencil , any suggestions what kind of pencil, this whole thing is done with a regular HB and there are so many types of pencils out there???

I agree with above…play with it on the computer before you change the drawing. The teacher’s request for more depth may be valid, but so is natural instinct and yours is very finely tuned and good. It produces a particular recognisable Billylee style. When it doubt- do nought!

  • Belinda "Billy... replied

Thanks Estelle, I am going to do what the others suggest but suttley, not too hard, just tiny tweaks here and there. Today I started on my second drawing and oh, my third print for the year. I am going to download the mock for the print now as I scanned the wood and the drawing together with another muse of mine…it looks hot…here goes!

billy I just can’t go without the very darkest and softest pencil I have the tin of Derwent 12 to a packet,Graphic Sketching H…..9B
You can also buy blocks? of graphite too I have a very large pencil type one and some shaped like pastel square sticks.Charcoal pencils are nice too but of course need spraying , I just figured this is for an assesment ,so it’s okay to change for here but needs to comply with what your teacher wants.
Oh hint too, using a razor blade [blunt edge on one side] to sharpen is nicer, less damage to the wood.

  • Belinda "Billy... replied

Excellent, I am going to give the 9B a go, love the info, thanks so much ginny!

Hi again Billy! I agree with everything that ginnymac said.
I spray pencil drawings too, especially something like 8B. For really dark bits I am a fan of charcoal pencils. Have fun!
