The Rhino Cage by billyboy
Clear

Currently unavailable for purchase

Antwerp Zoo in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium is probably not among the biggest in the world, but it’s definitely one of the most unusual.

Like you’re walking along following the sign to the Rhinos (as you do), and you got this ornate flemish style brick building staring you in the face and yer thinking “so where actually IS the Rhino cage?” and you can smell rhino in the air so you know you’re close but…
All of a sudden a massive rhino appears in the open doorway and you’re thinkin “Jeeze I wish I hadn’t taken such a whopping dose last night…”

And then it all starts to become clear… this actually IS the rhino cage!!

Shot on Ilford 400 ISO BW film in my Canon EOS-100 with 24-80 mm.
Decades ago.
Think we were taking daughter Melanie on an outing the day after she started to walk… she’s 28 now and probably doesn’t remember nuthin.

Or maybe it was all a dream?

Please check out Tracie`s link and scroll down a bit, as it shows a wider view… I had completely forgotten what is was like.
Seems the kangaroos own the house now (see the comments…:-)

Cheers for lookin’!

far out billyboy!!! what a knockout shot … the rhino in the doorway just looks soooooooo incongruous it would make a smashing montage but the fact that it’s ‘as is’ adds to the stunworthy reaction … top stuff … love it to pieces!

  • Thanks Carol, I actually don`t even remember taking the shot, but I do remember how freaked I was when this big guy appeared in the doorway. I thought the house was maybe where the zoo keeper lived?
Might have photoshopped him in years later, but it`s kinda cool I didn`t have to in the end :-))
    Cheers for the fave!

That’s just the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen….like some sort of surreal story with animals living in real houses….Awesome image, Bill, love it!!! I wanna see this place!

  • Mel, I just read Tracie`s comment and she linked me to some pictures of the place as it is now… seems the ROOS live there now! How cool is THAT?!?
Though it does make me wonder what happened to the poor Rhino… they never even replaced him. Guess he was just too horny :-)
    Oh well, life goes on…
    Cheers for favin!!

What an incredibly surreal kind of image – trust the Europeans to give the Rhino a more ornate house than most people have. Amazing and beautiful – and the black and white tones are spot-on!

  • Thanks Damienne, and yes, the place is very European looking and it`s actually one of the oldest zoos in the world.
I`m sure there actually ARE visitors who are pissed off that the animals live in cooler looking places than them, so that`s kind of an interesting point you`ve raised. But Belgium doesn`t actually have a government at the moment, so don`t know exactly who they`re gonna complain to :-)

Thanks for digging the tones… and for the fave!!

That is one amazing enclosure Billy!! I too thought you’d added the Rhino in PS at first glance….shoulda guessed that YOU would have an authentic original shot from back in the day. The architecture is incredible and after searching the zoo and checking it out, seems it has held the aussie kangaroo’s in there after they booted out the Rhino’s, amongst a few other animals having their turn as well :)
Cannot believe that the zoo is in the heart of the city, with surrounding buildings over looking some of the enclosures!
Night time noises in THAT neighbourhood must be bloody freaky as all hell. Would be like living in the movie, ‘A night at the Museum’ !!
This is bizzaro, that Rhino looks way too comfy in his city surrounds to me, it’s like he’s checking the front door to see if the postman’s been yet….
    xox

  • Tracie, I can`t believe you found that picture of the place as it is now. I also Googled the zoo last night… might have been doing it at the same time :-)… and I found nothing about that silly rhino, nor the house.
The picture blew me away cause I don`t remember that setting at all and never even imagine it had grass around it. And that the ROOS actually live there now is just amazing… I`m sure that horny rhino was just a pain in the butt. I can`t remember ever having seen such a dour animal in my whole life… I`ll bet he horn-butted the postman every single day! So yeah, they probably just booted his ass out with a one way visa back to Africa!!

The setting must be similar to the zoo in Melbourne… it`s also right next to the railway station. And you`re right about the Night at the Museum thing… must be spooky as shit walking by that place around midnight. Hey, maybe the rhino died in strange circumstances (roos probably got together and dripped poison in his ears while he slept) and his ghost haunts the place after dark…

Thanks for taking an interest in this, and for the fave… and if I ever go back I`ll feed the Roos on your behalf even if they don`t allow it. Lemme know what they dig for lunch?

Really? Wow. Would hate to be to the upstairs neighbor…

  • Hiya Dick!
Think it was actually the kangaroos… they got together and poisoned the rhino and took over his place. We all think they`re cool with their joey pouches and cute whiskers and stuff… but they can have dodgy agendas like the rest of us when we`re not lookin’. Just as well yer not living there dude!
    Thanks for stopping in :-)

Great surreal shot billyboy, nice to have the mother in law next door! Cheers, Mal

  • Thanks Mal, could you imagine a rhino`s mother-in-law??
I somehow can`t see it getting any worse than that in this universe :-))
    Cheers for the fave mate!
