Bruges!
This is Bruges. Land of the 24 hour pub crawl, and city with the largest vampire population in Belgium. It’s amazing how you end up mingling with them without even realizing… till you wake up in the morning with the telltale twin punctures on your neck.
So this is what came down… I was with my wife Bev and our friends Sue & Jeff from the UK, and at least two us us have a pretty wide tolerance of Belgian beer. So we were just walking back to our hotel after the 15th bar (an Irish pub believe it or not!) and in spite of our tolerance, none of us could actually speak. But we found ourselves crossing this quaint little stone bridge and looking off to my left, I saw this amazing view…
Fortunately there was no need to speak, and to my surprise I found that my hands, having been conditioned over many years of fixing my camera to a tripod to the point where it became automatic, needed no signal from my trashed brain to mount the mini pod on the stone rail and rattle off three panned shots on auto exposure.
It wasn’t until I got back to Brussels and had the film developed (yup, FILM!) that I realized I’d taken those shots and was shocked to find that they actually stitched together without too much hassle. The world is a strange place, but things start to make sense when you sit down and analyze the facts… the twin punctures on my neck… If I hadn’t have been bit by that vampire, I would have died from alcohol poisoning and would never have gotten this shot of one of my fav places on earth. Which is probably why there are so many vampires in Bruges… they are the official Belgian guardian angels!

It’s soooooo beautiful!!!! And FILM? OMFG BB!!! You are a total legend! My professional opion is that you simply MUST go out and get smashed more often if this is the kind of stuff you bring home in your doggy bag. I want my room to be the tallest one in the building to the left partially hidden behind the tree, can I have it? Can I? Can I? Pleeeeeeeze?
P.S. I will accept my thanks for you not having a hangover the next day in the form of chocolate. And for future reference, I’m not a big fan of guiness flavoured blood so lay of the stuff a little k?
billyboy replied
Haven`t you heard? Those clever Irishmen have discovered a way to remove the flavor from the blood while preserving the nutrition. Amazin’, yeah?

This is stunning BB,now I know your secret ,should I try this underwater :-)
billyboy replied
Matt, I so nearly tried this underwater myself… you`ll never know how close I came to falling off that bridge trying to find the shutter release!

The vampires don’t need to visit the bars when they can suck up so much alcohol from the veins of passers-by. Thank goodness they did too, or we would never have been able to see this amazing view of Bruges! What a beautiful place it is!
I hope that no vampires were harmed in the making of this magnificent pano :)
billyboy replied
Yeah, as if I would harm one of my own…!
Amanda Hammock
This is absolutely gorgeous. Not only do I want to jump in and take a look around, I would want to take up permanant residence. The lighting and color, the comp.
Bravo, dear B. Bravo.

Lovely reflections on the still water… great shot!
Stuart Chapman
OMG. The fact that this was taken after the 15th pub and you didn’t remember it was taken until you had it developed is totally priceless. This coupled with the fact that the image you have ended up with looks to have been painstakingly crafted and put together with lots of planning and waiting is just even more so incredible.
Therefore the story makes this shot just extra special. I am fortunate to have seen Bruges, although only by a day trip and therefore not after the sun had gone down. The light within the shot has held very well and I particularly love the light on the tree to the left. The reflections are just awesome too, the way the church takes the shot from top to bottom is great.
billyboy replied
Thanks for the great comment Stuart, and it`s cool you got the chance to see the splendour of Bruges. OK, you didn`t get the night vibe, but you so avoided an endless life of soul wrenching torment. Actually, have you checked your neck? There are some that move during the day…
The shot actually was put together painstakingly as I don`t have an automated pano stitching program so there was lots of manual stretching and color matching to do. I was just lucky the auto exposure worked as well as it did as I was hardly in a state to tackle camera settings at the time.
Cheers for looking close and taking the time to comment in depth!
rustycb
nice one, me too when we are there :)
Sarah Lombart
Welcome in my country…and you’re right…for vampires…do you want to see my teeth?
By the way…great unreal atmosphere.
billyboy replied
Sarah, I`ve lived in your beautiful country now for 42 years and have only just scratched the surface of the wonders to be found here.
And I definitely think we should discuss your teeth over lunch and see where we go from there…!

This is simply perfect Billyboy and I love that you captured this on film. You might not of captured this so well if you had set out to do so, Living in the moment pays off huh?
how you did this after 15 pubs is a little baffling though….... :)
billyboy replied
Well OK, it might have been 14… jeeze, how could I remember that if I couldn`t even speak??
Cheers for the lovely comment Lisa!
Arlene Zapata
Wow! The water is like glass w/inviting light. Your skillz prevail even w/intoxication and of course, we get a wildly creative story too! Thanx for the lunch time entertainment! :>)
aphoto4you
best night scene i have seen in loooooooooooong time…wow….for sure to my favorites…
clarkey
This is awesome, Bill. The river is like a perfect mirror, , . with the lights in all the right places to emphasize the most beautiful parts of the scene, with the centre being lit in blue-white light which draws my eyes right in. The church steeple to the left of centre is glowing and you’ve caught it very well – I imagine that the local vampires don’t go anywhere near that part of town! LOL
Tu es un raconteur sans égal. Your tale is so funny, although, you shouldn’t have needed a bite from a vampire, you’ve been one for . . . how many years is it now? 800 +? I guess even vampires have their moments of weakness. The years you have spent mounting your camera on tripods paid off handsomely. It doesn’t get any better than this.
billyboy replied
Thanks for those lovely words Jannie!
Raconteur NOT! The amount of alcohol in me that night could have killed 5 vampires, and young ones at that! It’s like Keith Richards… he goes every year for a transfusion (no, not the chocolate kind, silly!) to wash all the toxins from his blood… so you see, all of us vampires and undead need a top-up now and again to keep us going. Me? Raconteur???
Hugs from my coffin, BB

Kurt Tutschek
love this night shot, billy. fantastic reflections, the water isn’t moving a bit. and the colors are great too. great one!
clarkey
Raconteur, oui!!!!! Most of your visitors would agree with me 100% Maybe Mr Richards should try a chocolate transfusion, might have surprising results. How could I not know you need top-ups, it’s in so many of the SciFi shows – Buffy, Angel, and other ones from time to time.
If you weren’t a raconteur, you couldn’t tell such a tall tale with such mesmerising wit, to enthrall all who visit, when you were in such a state!
Rosina Lamberti
amazing shot.I love it.
Tracey Mac
A breathtaking shot BB and all under the influence! My God you are just too good and not only did you get the best shot of the night, so did the vampires LOL….no wonder this is your favourite place, it really is stunning by night, so I can only imagine how gorgeous it is by day…but then again, I guess you can’t handle the daylight in Bruges ;)
Fantastic light and reflections, a divine image!
billyboy replied
Yeah, the next morning was a REALLY bad daylight moment in Bruges!
Thanks for the lovely comment and encouragement!!
Ginny Schmidt
The vamp who bit you must have got quite a buzz on, but I’m glad you lived to create this marvelous work.
billyboy replied
Ginny, I don’t think “quite a buzz on” qualifies just how knackered she was come dawn… just two creatures of like blood group sharing good vibes. Doesn’t get much better than that!!!
janrique
I am speechless! Such a superb and perfect shot taking under the influence! Lucky the mini tripod and camera didn’t fall into the water but they didn’t and OMG was it worth it! The detail, clarity and reflections are all totally perfect. Very well done indeed!
billyboy replied
Yeah, it’s amazing how things unplanned work out. If I’d laid off the booze… and the vampires… for months in anticipation of getting this shot, I would have surely ended up in the drink. I’ll toast a glass of type O to spontaneity!!
susi lawson
well thank god for the vampires for without them we would not be witness to this incredible shot and the wonderful story behind it!! Bravo!

Cheers Norm!!

Oops I missed one…I have catching up to do, lol…Billy as usual your photography is absolutely stunning…and to be honest with you I envy you…wanna know why I bet? Because I rely so much on software to the point if I didn’t do enough manipulating on my images…I would feel down right naked, LOL…but someday I do have a goal to rely on my camera only (and manipulate on the side)...in order to produce quality as this, faaaaantastic!!!!
billyboy replied
Kellie, you sure know how to make the undead feel alive!
Your compliments go straight to the heart and are some of the nicest words anyone has said about my stuff.
But envy shouldn’t even enter into the equation. You have a gift and that is that you take a massive number of people places they want to be with your art, manipulated or not. Naturally you want to expand your talent, and your goal is a noble one… but envy? You, Kellie, are in a league that doesn’t even have that silly word in its dictionary. Hugs to you!

wow, Fantasticimage , love the light here and tones work so well .

brilliant shot love the reflections. Excellent night shot
Barbara Sparhawk
The kind of view if not for vampires inspires the imagining of desperate horsemen delivering messages or rescue, a very dramatic Hollywood set look, so perfect, that wonderful curve of the waterway, all the lines a beautiful geometry. Then of course, the stunning color. Save the blues, all Rembrandt.
SharonAHenson
Luck was on your side that night….what an amazing “film” shot…well done !!!!!

billyboy – I just read your funny bio regarding this photo…hehe – you are so funny! I love it! Oh and I really love this beautiful photo! Keep drinking the beer and I’ll keep you in supply!

Barbara Morrison
Wow! that’s alot of comments! By the time I got all the way to the bottom I forgot what I was going to say, but what is really amazing about the picture is how still and glass-like the water is. Make me want to throw a rock in it. Beautiful photo!
billyboy replied
Thanks for your perseverence Barbara, and for the kind words. In fact my friends were laughing so hard at me trying to set this shot up while I could barely stand up straight, I`m surprise the wind they generated didn`t cause ripples!
Mark Ramstead
An eye catcher for sure! I liked the movie too!
caseycastille
Haven’t seen the movie yet, but I love the previews. This is awesome, and looks especially good as the print above!
I’ve missed you. Sorry I lost touch. Nice to be back around these parts!
RSart
beautiful photo Paco. The lighting and reflections are wonderful. It looks so much like an old painting. I climbed up the steps of that tower when I lived in Belgium. At the top there were arrows etched into the stone indicating the directions of major cities, but it was a long time ago so maybe I’m wrong? They also had a ‘marché aux puces’ market nearby with dentelles weavers in historical costumes, the town is like a giant museum. don’t you hate it when we the english come and spoil it all by making it the SPOT for hen nights??
billyboy replied
Rosa, I don`t think you ever told me you lived in Berlgium… I`ve been here for nearly 42 years! Thanks for the kind words, and in fact that tower must have no fewer than 10 million bricks in it! The people I was with were too chicken to climb the tower so I went up on my own… such an amazing view from up there.
I wasn`t aware that the Brits were using Bruges for their hen nights, but I`ve been to a couple of Brussels bars that were taken over by those boisterous birds… most English aren`t used to the strength of Belgian beer and tend to fall off the tables they`re dancing on. Enormous entertainment value if you`re just a bystander!
So tell me… is it safe to get out of the car now, or is your sister still lurking around?
and you gotta tell me… how did I get the nickname “Paco”? Most people call me Billyboy, but Paco has sort of a cool latino ring to it…
RSart
I lived in Berlgium for a year, left england to be with a Berlgium boy i was oh so in love with at the time. paco is spanish for eagle. beacause you look like an eagle ( i tend to compare humans to birds). now open the doors… very slowly and run for your life…... run to the hills.

Nice shot and excellent narration..

Brilliant colours and exposure. What a scene!! Magnificent work…
Maria Mann
Hi Billyboy, in my other life as a managing editor of a newsphoto agency I keep telling the photographers to disassociate what they went through with the actual final image. But now you”ve gone and shattered my blather with this beautiful shot, done through beer-soaked neurons. You amaze me, but then I’m sure you constantly amaze yourself!
billyboy replied
Maria, I am SO sorry to have shattered your blather, but am really happy you dig the shot. I find it difficult to disassociate (especially when beer and vampires are involved), and so with most of my pictures comes a rundown of just about everything except what i was wearing at the time. But it’s just me, and the background gives me as much of a buzz as the final image… and perhaps has a lot to do with the inspiration that created it. Now there’s a theory that you can pass onto those hungry photographers if you ever slip back into your other life!
Thank you for a truly lovely comment!
DWarren
Exquisite scene, beautifully done!! Tell me, is there still a river (Louvain) in Belgium called Dyle?
billyboy replied
Yes Dyle, it seems there still is… but I had to Google it! Runs between Mechelen and Ottignies, passing through Louvain. The river was named after the famous Dyle Warren who hails from a small town in Texas.
Cheers for checking this out… and cool that you got a pic of Jason! You`re on my watchlist now and will check your pf out later when I`ve got more time!!
DWarren
Yep, you’re right about the name…......hahahaha….got a kick out of that one!!
Your work is beautiful and I thank you for adding me…....
Louise Cooke
what a classic story BB!! How the hell did you manage this after a night on the beers? My camera does strange things after only about 3-4 drinks!! The clarity, colour, stillness and light are just to die for here. Make sure you take your camera next time you hit the town…hmm..that could be asking for some dodgey images!!
billyboy replied
Hey Louise! If I gave my camera 3 – 4 drinks it would act strangely too… that’s why I keep her strictly off the booze! The only reason this came out as good as it did was because she was on full auto and was dead sober. She knows how to look after her man!
Carol Lirette
this is a beautiful shot!!
Carol Lirette
beautiful capture! pretty amazing shot considering your situation. love the depth & colors!!
billyboy replied
Thanks Carol, but it’s not really amazing at all. Vampires inspire me, and so does booze. Considering such extreme exposure to both, I think this shot’s a bit on the mediocre side. But cheers for the encouragement!!
Rhonda Thomassen
I think it is very pretty and serene looking. Belgium is definitely full of culture and I only spent the day there!
Louise Cooke
Oh!!! So my camera has the drinking problem!! Good advise, I’ll keep it strictly on shandies only! I knew I must be doing something wrong :)))
billyboy replied
I`d even keep it off the shandies if I were you. If it eats to compensate as gets fat, well, shit happens!
MrJoop
Great picture. Just like last time that I visited your work, I am reminded of the book Only in Holland. Only the Dutch.
I’m intrigued by what the experience of an American in Belgium must be like and the old An American in Paris is now going to keep going through my head. :( :)
billyboy replied
I can tell you Mr. Joop, that it was intriguing. Been here since 1966… things were different then! Are you from Gouda like your parents? Been many times to that amazing place. My company used to build meat packing machines for Compaxo.
Thanks for the comment and keep listening to Gerschwin!

Bruge is beautiful and you captured a difficult scene very well.I love the way the stillness of the water so perfectly reflect the charming town. The control of shadow well balanced, as it would e os easy to have burns in the highlight areas.
billyboy replied
Don’t know if you read the description, but there is no way I captured this very well… I don’t even remember waking up the next morning. Let’s just say my camera captured it well for me… My old trusty film camera always looked after me when I was unable to function on my own. Hope the new digital one proves to be as loyal!
C J Hummel - ...
Maybe your receipy will work for me too.
Get drunk then let camera take over – perfect picture… WOW
billyboy replied
Go for it. Get a bottle of absinthe, find a nice piece of driftwood, then let the camera do the rest. You’ll have something to stare at for hours on end!
JayneLogan
I love your work! I’ve been viewing and saying “wow” for about 20 minutes LOL LOL ; I’m going to Bruges in about 3 weeks! Finding this treasure of an image has made my day! Cheers!
billyboy replied
Jayne, I can guarantee you one thing in this crazy life of uncertainties and broken dreams… you will LOVE Bruges. It is the most charming place I`ve ever been to in my life, and I`ve been around a bit.
Don`t know how long you`re intending to stay, but you need to walk the town at night (3 weeks from now the weather will be gorgeous even if it rains!) and take in some of the bars and restaurants. Everything is magical at night.
OK, the vampires could be a problem, but if you stick a couple of drops of ketsup on yer neck, they`ll think you`ve already been had.
So go for it big, and be sure and let me know how you get on. Lots of pics would be cool. If you`re travelling light, buy a cheap tripod locally to get some night shots!!
billyboy replied
ps: Cheers for the fav!!
JayneLogan
Yay! I’m bringing my tripod so I’m ready to roll! Woo! Now I’m really excited! I’m a raven-haired dominatrix so I’ll fit in just fine with the Vamps. MxxxRuby is my other persona on BuBB. Oh yes .. I am going there especially to photograph my heart out! I’ll be sure to post some lovelies!
Thanks BillyBoy … glad I found your site tonite!

The light, color and clarity are excellent, and I love the reflections. Your story of how this shot came about is also very well composed. Well done!

For some reason I am drawn back to the mood of this image…..imagining how you ever got it, but you did and lucky for us, there it was on the camera when you developed the film…....kinda like when YOU would look in a mirror and not see yerself…......
Kind of makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck thinkin about you getting vamped that night too…...that coulda been a kodak moment as well!
I wonder if there are any crossroads near this magical setting…....and did you check all the images from that night? Maybe there’s more in them than you first thought, sure you didn’t miss anything Billy?
So cool to see this amazing shot again, I love the feelings this evokes, and your seamless treatment is of course total perfection…...
xox ;
billyboy replied
OK Tracey… you asked for it…
This is a picture taken through my V-Scope, which I always take to Bruges with me when I’m gonna be there at night. To make it as non-techy as possible, it’s a special camera that detects the presence of vampires. There were 3 people in this scene, but the fact that nobody appears in this shot (which incidentally I need to process in my own “black room”) means that the area was free of vampires and hence safe.
However, in my stupor, I failed to take cogniscence of what was directly behind me. Standing in this crossing of two footpaths, I felt a gloved hand on my shoulder and then a sharp pain in my neck. I regained consciousness about an hour later… only to face consciousness for the next 500 years.
This photo remains as a constant reminder of the night I lost my soul to the dark… and embarked upon the most sexually satisfying part of my life…
Now… whatcha doin’ fer dinner lady?
