Justice for All !
This is the entrance to the Palais de Justice in Brussels, one of the biggest and most imposing buildings in Europe, and the place where you go when you are very, very bad. I’ve been there, but got lost in all the maze of padded courtrooms and archive offices… then slipped out the back door before anyone could find me. Very Kafka.
Taken on Kodak T-Max, neg scanned to digital.

What did you do that was so really, really bad that you deserved a visit to such an imposing place, bill? It;’s stunning your image, it must be over-powering when faced with the reality. Beautifully done work.

Jan, I was so totally unjustly accused… I swear I didn’t do it. I mean, it’s not my fault that the only witness died mysteriously, and hey, they never found the body NOR the weapon… Can’t actually believe they ever thought they had a case!!
Thanks again everyone… and I PROMISE to be good as gold from now on!
Kimberly Palmer
So much symmetry in this shot, it’s right on cool.

billyboy
Yeah, I gotta admit… the Hetfield image sticks in my mind. Paul hit the nail on the proverbial head with that one!
Cheers to everyone who’s commented on this and for the encouragement. Just proves it pays to be bad!
Hagen
Impressive… Why exactly were you there? Is there an international arrest warrant to your name? :)
billyboy
It’s only Interpol… no big deal. Besides, I’m innocent. There was definitely a one-armed man!
Paul Finnegan
cracking great stuff billy. really captured the feeling of the place with this. the title really suits and i love the James Hetfield reference also
Markku Vitikainen
Great image. I like how b&w brings more depth to the picture than digital. I like the composition, lighting and all the little details. T-max is great film. Would be nice
to see the original print.
kristal ingersoll
What a captivating picture, so intense, the light draws you in and the hall way feels like it goes on for miles you just sit there looking into the darkened hall way wondering how much further it goes and what could possibly be at the end. Fantastic job!!
MikeMcA2
Oh, and regarding Kafka, “Everyone strives after the law”
cynthiab
brilliant in black and white makes for more drama
billyboy
Thanks Paul, Markku, Kristal, Mike and Cynthia! I actually went up the stairs, but I too always wondered what was down that dark passage. I decided in the end that I better just stay away!
And yes, everyone strives after the law, and gets lost in the burocracy and poor on the lawyers’ fees. Amazing times we live in!
billyboy
Markku, nice to hear from someone who remembers T-Max! Cool thing about scanning negs is there seems to be no need for special conversion. On all my BW scans, all I’ve ever done is de-saturate and adjust the levels, and I’ve always been pleased with the results. Infra red is a bit more tricky, but it’s got its own brand of fun. The original print of this looks very similar to what comes out of my inkjet printer. I’m pretty blown away myself how close the prints look to the former method. Thanks for the interest!
Globalphotos

Walter Strength
Another wnoderful shot. Great job on the tonal range.
Vasile Stan
Great B&W work, sharp & detailed. The place seems very imposing and it makes one feel small and “defeated” just by stepping in. Kafkian indeed.
billyboy
Thanks Wanda, Shanina and Walter!
iCandor, you get Kafka. Wicked!
Vasile Stan
I lived in a kafkian regim for over 30 yrs.. and now I see this slowly but surely taking over America.

This is just a fantastic B&W Billyboy!!
nikki024
Amazing shot!!!! I really like this one alot
Jason Moses
Beautiful shot, billyboy. Something that amazes me is that, my (lack of) taste for copied Greco-Roman architecture notwithstanding, the titanic scale is far more imposing than in modern buildings. Perhaps it’s having been to places like Paris, where there aren’t skyscrapers to detract from the monuments’ impact. Anyway, enough digression – that sense of scale is something you’ve captured very well.
agtaylor
Great shot!
poppykitten
This is a great shot, really imposing, I am lovin the title, I will have Metallica in my head for the rest of the day, and for that-I thank you :-)

2 words come to mind when I see this:
Royal, and Majestic. It’s not what you’ve captured..but how you’ve
captured & conveyed it that makes a statement here. Well done!!

Jonicool
Beautiful image! Love how you composed the shot and the mono really brings out the details!
Amanda Hammock
Almost overwhelming, as I am sure getting lost was, to take it all in. At first glance there is a sense of awe but then to find out you really do not want to be here if you have been playing in the cookie jar when mom said no, it gives it a bit more of an imposing feel.
Needless to say, it evokes emotion.
Splendid work.
Marcia Luly
Wonderful work…full of dark, light and shadow…very “Kafka”.
Mia1
STUNNING. Love the lighting
Jean M. Laffitau

Lenka
Great photo, perfect in B&W!
Barbara Sparhawk
Very imposing, designed brilliantly to make the perpetrators or innocent feel guilty and small. Exquisite architecture, I’ve never seen this before. Beautifully photographed so that the viewer feels the intent of the place. It makes me want to be very very good.
Inishiata
Ha, ha – Barbara now there’s a collaboration in the making – the very, very bad Billyboy and the very, very good Barbara!
Billyboy – I love this image – speaks to my gut. Very visceral.
billyboy replied
Oooh, you’d be surprised… I bet Barbara’s got a dark side too. A collab? Could be cool…
Wicked that this speaks to your gut. Thanks for the fav!!

Great capture, the use of black and white is just masterful.
Ralph Olsson
Just mastery mate..and great story with it…had me laughing!!!
Peter Zentjens
Considering the size of RB, I see we are practically neighbours. :)
This is indeed a masterful shot with a perfectly balanced composition. The line on the left really draws the eye into the complex maze that is justice at the back of the image.
A fine symbol these days now that the country is seeing some incredibly injustice with cop killers turned loose on procedure errors. :(
linaji
Kafka often made extensive use of a trait special to the German language allowing for long sentences that sometimes can span an entire page.
I better learn German.. tteee hee.. just jumpin in a bit here in BB Land,, your mood here makes me want to go early in the morning to see such grand Architectural beauty… I have done this in many places.. just the feeling of stone and marble.. really gives me a sense of peace. beautiful work.
billyboy replied
The Trial. This place is the existential nerve center of the universe. I kid you not… once you are deep into the bowels of this place, you are lucky to ever see the light of day again. I was one of the very lucky ones. I know those who have never made it out.
And yes, those amazing Germans. Sentences?? They’ve got WORDS that can span an entire page!
Bless you for faving this. If you ever make it to Brussels, I will thrill you taking you into this place. It will be deep. You will never be the same…
linaji
And that would be WOW!
Jerame *
Wonderful shot! Feels Epic!
PhantomARTS
This is a great picture. I love black and white.
billyboy
Thanks PA!
Wonder what some of your textured art would look like in BW?
If you work with Photoshop or similar, you should try simply desaturating your digital images or maybe even playing with the color channels to see what it would give. Might be interesting if you dig black & white.
MoxieNox
W o W…. You’ve nailed the foreboding feeling of gloom that will await us beyond the door right under the archway, if we do bad, bad things.. ... Love the tones and the lighting.
