Justice for All !

Justice for All !

This is the entrance to the Palais de Justice in Brussels, one of the biggest and most imposing buildings in Europe, and the place where you go when you are very, very bad. I’ve been there, but got lost in all the maze of padded courtrooms and archive offices… then slipped out the back door before anyone could find me. Very Kafka.

Taken on Kodak T-Max, neg scanned to digital.

What a captivating picture, so intense, the light draws you in and the hall way feels like it goes on for miles you just sit there looking into the darkened hall way wondering how much further it goes and what could possibly be at the end. Fantastic job!!

Thanks Paul, Markku, Kristal, Mike and Cynthia! I actually went up the stairs, but I too always wondered what was down that dark passage. I decided in the end that I better just stay away!
And yes, everyone strives after the law, and gets lost in the burocracy and poor on the lawyers’ fees. Amazing times we live in!

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Markku, nice to hear from someone who remembers T-Max! Cool thing about scanning negs is there seems to be no need for special conversion. On all my BW scans, all I’ve ever done is de-saturate and adjust the levels, and I’ve always been pleased with the results. Infra red is a bit more tricky, but it’s got its own brand of fun. The original print of this looks very similar to what comes out of my inkjet printer. I’m pretty blown away myself how close the prints look to the former method. Thanks for the interest!

  • Jason Moses

Beautiful shot, billyboy. Something that amazes me is that, my (lack of) taste for copied Greco-Roman architecture notwithstanding, the titanic scale is far more imposing than in modern buildings. Perhaps it’s having been to places like Paris, where there aren’t skyscrapers to detract from the monuments’ impact. Anyway, enough digression – that sense of scale is something you’ve captured very well.

Almost overwhelming, as I am sure getting lost was, to take it all in. At first glance there is a sense of awe but then to find out you really do not want to be here if you have been playing in the cookie jar when mom said no, it gives it a bit more of an imposing feel.

Needless to say, it evokes emotion.

This is indeed a masterful shot with a perfectly balanced composition. The line on the left really draws the eye into the complex maze that is justice at the back of the image.
A fine symbol these days now that the country is seeing some incredibly injustice with cop killers turned loose on procedure errors. :(

Kafka often made extensive use of a trait special to the German language allowing for long sentences that sometimes can span an entire page.

I better learn German.. tteee hee.. just jumpin in a bit here in BB Land,, your mood here makes me want to go early in the morning to see such grand Architectural beauty… I have done this in many places.. just the feeling of stone and marble.. really gives me a sense of peace. beautiful work.

  • billyboy replied

The Trial. This place is the existential nerve center of the universe. I kid you not… once you are deep into the bowels of this place, you are lucky to ever see the light of day again. I was one of the very lucky ones. I know those who have never made it out.

And yes, those amazing Germans. Sentences?? They’ve got WORDS that can span an entire page!

Bless you for faving this. If you ever make it to Brussels, I will thrill you taking you into this place. It will be deep. You will never be the same…

Wonder what some of your textured art would look like in BW?
