Under the pier
In love
What could be more inspiring to try my frist attempt at HDR?
As the pier created severe shadows, there’s no way I could have kept the blue sky with a single exposure. So I took three, with auto bracketing (+2, even, -2). You need something to keep the camera still as the 3 shots are ultimately processed together with a program called Photmatix (there are others, but this is the one I used), so I just jammed the camera against a nearby pile and held my breath. Told the two lovebirds to hold theirs too!
The software lets you choose lots of processing options once the three pictures are loaded. It even helps align the shots if there was slight movement. The process by which the tonal values are selected from the 3 (or more) shots is called tone mapping, and the results can be really unusual. In this case, without going for extreme effect, I like the way parts of the image seem to stand out from the rest, and I also like what it does to the tones and topography of the skin… not to mention retention of highlight and shadow detail which would have been lost in a single exposure undern these conditions.
OK, so it’s all been done before. But not by ME, so I’m excited, yeah? Got a couple more I’ll share later… like inside the biggest Harley dealership in the world… HD in HDR…?
Thanks for lookin’... and feelin’ the love!!

Hey billyboy! The technical stuff lost me completly but the image is cool. And that is your daughter! Only seen your avatar but the likeness is striking. Nice shot!

Has ahunted her every day of her life!!

Charlie
Naw, Martin….she’s alot prettier than Billyboy!! LOL
billyboy replied
Too late dude, I’ve been back for a couple of weeks… but I’ll keep Savanna in mind for next time!
... and you sure about that Charlie? You obviously ain’t seen me in a bikini…
billyboy
Couldn’t resist a shot of the pier… less the lovers… done in the same way.
I know you’ve seen 5000 pier shots. So here’s another!!

funkyfacestudio
I don’t know any of that technical stuff but I take your word for it because these shots are awesome ! The piers are massively beautiful but your daughter is stunning ! They look like a happy loving couple wow those shadows and the light are really eye catching, I love the little sun kiss on her head too :)
billyboy replied
Lisa, you got such a sweet way of telling me what you like.

Kriss, it’s only the frist 4 lines of the description that are of any importance in the fullness of time. Thanks for recognizing that and bringing me down to earth mate…
HDR. Harley Davidson Rules!!

Ahhhh, billy’s doing HDR!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!! Awesome work, Bill, love the detail that you’ve managed to bring out, and you’ve used it sensitively, which is the most important part….love it!!
billyboy replied
That coming from the HDR Queen of the farken World absolutely gives me a buzz. It’s true, I’ve seen lots of OTT results that don’t do it for me. I think another important thing is using the right program… CS2 to 4 has an on-board HDR feature, but it’s not amazing compared to Photomatix. Haven’t tried the Photmatix plug-in yet but will get to that eventually.
Thanx for stopping by!!

Very creative……………wonderful post treatment
billyboy replied
Thank you Ade!
I`m dating a white witch tonite.
Any tips??

Peter Marin has an explanation on how best to use the photoshop engine, and he swears the combination of PS and photomatix can give an excellent result. My eyes aren’t quite so good that I can see the difference…
billyboy replied
That`s way interesting Mel… can you send me a link or something? Don`t know if mine can see the diff either but it`ll at tleast make a good read…

She`ll thank you for that… thinks she looks too young for her age. Like she needs to show her driver`s licence when she watches PG flicks!

Hans Kawitzki
Being your first go at HDR you have got the hang of it pretty fast Billyboy and have produced a very nice image of the lovebirds
billyboy replied
Thanks Hans, that`s a nice compliment.
But truthfully, it`s pretty hard NOT to take a great pic of those two!
mikepaulhamus
very nice shot, I’ve been thinking of getting into HDR as well, excellent for first effort, looks like your going too get hooked, have fun.
billyboy replied
Cool. Yankee Stadium in HD.
Gimme a heads up when you get a result!
And yes, already hooked. Gotta feeling there`s gonna be lots more…
Thanks for digging my first attempt!!
Charlie
Awesome work Billyboy! Great job on the HDR work….and you’re right…I haven’t seen you in a bikini, so hey, I could be wrong!! Cheers mate!

You might have to wait on that a bit… I`m kinda shy…
Robyn Lakeman
Hey billyboy, awesome work, it’s the most gorgeous capture. They do look so in love. Love the pics of the pier too, brilliant work

Hey Robyn!
That setting was so magical… sort of like your avatar (PLEASE don`t ever change that… feel like framing it every time you visit!)... the pics just took themselves.

billyboy replied
Ade, you know very well I`m a vampire…
But I got no prob with vamps. The darker the better. Don`t even have to speak english…
Btw, I`ll BM you my real age…

Dave Warren
Wow, this is stunning for a first attempt, i am stunned by it, what program did you use if you dont mind me askin?
billyboy replied
Used Photmatix Dave. You can download a demo version that leaves a watermak on your image, but it lets you evaluate and you can test the tone mapping options.
Full version is about 100 USD, or 20 more for the version with Photoshop plug-in, which I haven`t tried yet.
If you`re OK with the price, I doubt that there`s a better program for HDR, so why not give the demo a try?
Just Google Photomatix and go for it!
Thanks for the fav btw!!!

billyboy replied

I am SO gonna get down and dirty with this!!
xox
Dave Warren
Hi BB, i already use that program but i dont seem to get results like this!
billyboy replied
I think it`s all in the tweaking… and being sure not to go too far with the effect. In fact, even when I`m done in Photomatix, I tweak areas of the pics with curves in CS, and even do a bit of color balance tweaking. I get pretty anal with levels and contrast and will mess with an image for hours till it`s just the way I want it. Never was much one for pushing buttons and applying algorythms…
I`d keep working at it Dave… keeping the effect at maximum, try to avoid maxing out in the other parameters. You should also be aware that some images just turn out better in HDR than others. Also make sure you cover the whole dynamic range with your bracketing… you need to go at least 2 full stops either way, plus middle. Sometimes 4 shots works better too!
Let me know how you get on, or if you`ve got any Q`s… hope I can help!
billyboy replied
ps: You might also want to check out Mel`s link above…

excellent and very beautiful ! :)

This looks good, Bill, especially for a first. I like your subtle use of the process, especially the effect on Mel’s and Art’s skin tones. I wish I could get it to work – I’ve tried Photoshop, PhotoImpact and PhotoMatix! ! I’m looking forward to seeing the others. P.S.: I like the colour pier, too.
billyboy replied
Cheers Jannie!
Why not BM me and let me know what problems your having with photomatix… I might be able to help even though I’ve only just started using it.
Will probably upload the next over the weekend… so busy these days…

Gorgeous! I have shot in HDR and I can’t believe you got a shot this good without a tripod. Fantastic color, lighting and focus. Beautiful couple! Both the pier shots, in color and black & white, are stunning as well. GREAT JOB billyboy!!
billyboy replied
Katy, gorgeous coming from you is like way cool !
And OK, it wasn`t exactly a tripod… but I left a serious dent in one of the pier piles cause I pressed the camera so hard against it… and held my breath. Don`t know if a tripod would have actually done the trick :-)
Thanks so much for your compliments and support… and just for breezing in and making me smile!

Wow, wonderful HDR image, you’re an expert already !!! Love the pier shots too :-))

Often wondered if you did HDR on some of yours?
Naw, think your thing was more like waiting for perfect exposure conditions and just getting it totally right !
Can`t wait to see your new stuff!!
xo♥
susi lawson
This is totally incredible and beautiful Billy! makes me really really want to take the time to learn this! GORGEOUS!
billyboy replied
Susi, some people like me, need HDR to bring the soul in their pictures up front. You do it by just clicking the shutter. That comes from just being so much in love with your world that your subjects reflect it back through your lens. Even the inanimate ones Can’t learn that stuff. Can’t buy it neither. You are one in a gazillion. Always were. Always will be…
But cheers for the compliment. Gorgeous coming from you works for me.

Worked out really superb, and I love the pier, too. Such a great effect. One of these days I’m gonna try it too….
billyboy replied
Micklyn, you too are one of those artists whos work is consistantly amazing without HDR or any other processing effect. But if you got into it, you would make it sing for you… so yeah, I hope to see some rockin’ HDR from you soon. Yer gonna have so much fun!!

No, better not…
OK then I’ll fo it.
Just a bit later…
OK, DEFINITELY tomorrow. Will you be around?
Right. I’m thinkin’ bout it, yeah…?

Birgitta
Oh I’m a big HDR fan. :) Have been for a few yrs. now.
Well I’ll tell you what. You’re onto something! I’ve never bracketed
my shots before, because up until now I’ve been the point-n-shoot
queen, but hold onto your boots, BillyBoy, I’ve just bought my first DSLR!
(EOS 450D) You’ve inspired me to start bracketing. (soon) I see
what you mean by bringing out certain areas only (such as the white
foam on the left and the soft sea green colour directly behind them.)
You’ve steered clear of the dark & gritty after effects of the clarifying
, as I see no tell tale signs of it. It’s pretty clean!
Beautiful couple too. :)
billyboy replied
I was just thinkin’...
WHERE is Birgitta? Like this place is just NOT cool without you comin’ in and doin’ yer lipstick…
OK. So you are gonna have a blast. Just make sure the camera’s rock steady and choose your subjects well. You’ll soon see which work the best. You didn’t have a DSLR?? So… then, how did you… OK, ferget it. You could blow us away with a pinhole camera!
Here’s the 3 shots so you can see what the bracketing produces. No post pro at all here… and shot in JPEG, not RAW. JPEG works fine….
I was blown away that 2 stops either way made such a diff. You’ll probably also find out you need to do some tweaking of contrast and colors after the HDR is generated. But I’m sure you’ll make it rock. Like you do everything else you snap.
Thanks for the interest, and can’t wait to see what you can do with it!
xo♥
Antanas
lovely photo

Thanks Antanas!
Rich Gale
Super work Billy, can’t say I’ve had much luck doing Multi exposue HDR with out a tripod but you have pulled it off in great style here, I really like the way you have processed it dose not look at all HDR just like a well exposed image. This is what HDR is supposed to be about solvling those dynamic range problems we all have.
Great work a super image.
Rich.
billyboy replied
Rich, what you have just so eloquently written here goes straight to the core of what I too believe HDR is all about.
Thanks so much for putting your thoughts down and for faving this. Support like yours is what encourages us all to go deeper and expand on what we know.
Cheers mate, you made my day!
susi lawson
Just like u to compliment me after complimenting you, You crazy boy! Thanks so much for the very very very kind words!
BTW, your daughter and her hubby are a stunning couple!

Just like you to reply to my complimenting you after your compliment… jeeze this is getting complicated…
And BTW I`ll pass your other compliment onto Mel & Art!
Kurt Tutschek
very nice hdr – and i like all the images. my favorite is the pier in black and white. stunning photo.
billyboy replied
That`s cool you like the BW the best… I`m kind of leaning that way myself and I`m looking forward to getting more into HDR black & white.
Thanks so much for passing by and giving your take!!
Rachel Davison
This is a superb HDR – still retains a natural feel and just pops!!!
billyboy replied
Hey Rachel!
Thanks so much for that. For me the HDR effect is all about retaining the natural as so many images overdo it.
Nice of you to stop by!
xo
rodeorose
Great shot Billy. Love to read your notes on HDR since it’s something I am just foolin’ around with now. I like to not be able to recognize it’s been applied, and in this shot you’ve achieved that well. I like your other pier shots too. Don’t get tired of piers…
billyboy replied
Thanks so much Rosie!
I`m just dabbling in it too, and you`re so right about the subtlety of the effect… depends on the subject. The Harley shop shot needed more to make it stand out of the ordinary, but this portrait… well, the love needed to come through…
Cheers for commenting!!
rodeorose
Yep, Harley shot is perfect too ;) I agree.
Irish
Your doing so great with the HDR ….and the shot is so Awwwwwww :)

rjcolby
This is a treat. Like the originals, to show how the range exceeds the sensor’s ability to capture at one shot. HDR opens many previously closed windows. Great composition and point of view also. Love the eye contact.
billyboy replied
Thanks RJ, that’s a massive compliment from someone who’s mastered HDR to your extent.
The eye contact? They’re both so amazingly natural in front of the camera… saves a lot on memory card space. One shot usually does it. Unless I’m doing HDR and then it’s three…
Cheers for the support mate!
rjcolby
When first starting to do HDR, I had a time remembering to think about all the other aspects of the photograph, such as composition, or is it even worth shooting. Just because now you can does not mean you should. Most all of the other “rules” still apply, within reason, of course. People HDR is quite a trick. I sometimes fight the blink, by telling them to blink three times on my count, and shoot immediately after three, well before when four would have happened.
billyboy replied
Too true. So many HDR shots I’ve seen have been about the effect rather than the image. I’m hoping that I’ll get the hang of it well enough to concentrate on the stuff that makes the effect yield to the art. Thanks for advice!!
Jeff Burns
Gorgeous shot well done

Brain cells slowly goin dead… too much R & R. More Rock & Roll than Rest & Relaxation…
But it`s OK cause even with low brain cell count, I still dig sweet comments…
Jason Moses
I usually don’t dig HDR because it’s too often overdone. Thanks for the +2, 0, -2 comparison because it shows just how shrewdly you’ve employed the technique.
The under-pier shot is way cool as well – I for one haven’t seen anything like it.
billyboy replied
Jason, nice to see you… and thanks for that!
In the past, I would have actually gotten round the exposure thing by taking the three shots and manually choosing the best parts of each to make a composite. But the cool thing about Photomatix is it delivers this cool effect which it allows you to tweak so it doesn`t overcook (unless of course you want it to). If you haven`t tried it yet, you should give the trial version a go. It`s the same thing, but you get a watermark on your work till you pay. I personally feel it`s worth every cent.
And cool you liked the pier shot. Probably should have made it a separate post. But the brain cells are slowly dying…
