Big BangTheory!
I changed the picture on this post cause this last drum kit picture I made for our studio website updates turned out the coolest of the bunch, so I decided to make it the main pictue. This is a Staccato kit… everyone used them in the early 70`s, but now they`re getting hard to find even if you pay a big price. They don`t even have great tone, but they look stunning and if you mic them up with lots of EQ on stage, they sound massive just like they always did. They`re made of fiberglass, and were made in Canada by Ayotte, and in England under the Hayman/Arbiter label. The snare drum in the pic is a vistalite (plexiglass) Hayman which is from the same era and vibe. Using the remote flash under the snare (see below) I was able to illuminate its transparency
Below are the rest, and here`s a basic description of how I set up the shots for anyone who might be inetersted in some of the lighting methods and tips I discovered during the many hours it took me to set up these simple looking shots. I’m not experienced in this kind of work, so maybe my own trial and error might help anyone doing similar product shoots to avoid wasting time in getting it right.
I used two Elinchrom 250 W Flash heads, each with 60×60 cm softbox. The one on the left side was kept oblique to minimize reflections, and low enough to avoid downward shadows from the metal brackets holding the toms. The flash on the right side needed to be high to avoid reflections from the metallic brand labels. With product shots, getting the manufacturers labels well lit and recognizable is totally important. I also chose a backround of a neutral tone so that all the different colors of the various drum kits would show up nicely and not clash.
This set up seemed simple enough, but there were problems, even after optimizing the positioning of the two main lights. The snare drum was important to the shot, but being tucked in behind the kit, it was in total shadow. To solve this, I took my off-camera hot-shoe flash and mounted it onto a remote light cell (can be bought in most camera shops) that triggers when it sees the flash from one of the main lights. I placed this smaller flash facing upwards just at the bottom of the bass drum so as to light the snare and the seat. A bonus was that it also lit the inside of the bass drums so that the inside walls could be seen through the holes used to insert microphones and resonance damping for recording. It also added a bit of light underneath the cymbals which although I didn’t notice before, it made a big difference when compared to the original shots without the extra flash.
So this was all working OK, but the shots still lacked dynamic. I then used another separate hot-shoe flash with remote cell, placed in the rear and facing upwards to light the rear wall just enough to break the monotony.
The rest was just down to balancing the intensities of the four flash units, and finally adjusting the camera aperture to get the best depth of field while letting in enough light to avoid underexposure. In the end, I marked all the positions of the flashes and camera tripod so I could keep these basic positional settings for all the shots. It was enough work setting up the kits mechanically without having to worry about going through the lighting setup again.
The setup was constant enough so that I needed very little post processing… just adding a bit of contrast to boost the dynamic, and collaging in the manufacturers’ logos on the bass drum skins.
I hope anyone who’s interested enough to have read this through picks up one or two tips that might make similar setups a bit easier. Any questions, and I’ll be happy to attempt an answer!!

... and here was me thinkin’ the guitarists always got the groupies…
I think this yellow Staccato was groupie inspired, yeah? I’ll let your own imagination work on that for a bit…
Thanks for lovin’ the drum stuff!

Wow I read this a couple times.. and I am so amazed as I look at this shot how lighting is EVERYTHING.. wow.. thanks so much. I am scared now.. smile..
billyboy replied
Lina, judging by the way you light up everything that crosses your path, you won`t even need to splash out on the gear.
Cool you found this interesting enough to read a couple of times… and scared can be good…

one hell of a job babe…and it makes me realise how much effort and work goes into your photography…i have much to learn

And yup, I’m buyin’!!

Love the shine on that wood!!!!!!
billyboy replied
Yeah, it’s kind of like skin. You wouldn’t believe how this kit feels when you smooth over its surface with the palm of your hand… If I were a drum kit, I would SO dig having sex with that one. I relegated it to the end of the post so I wouldn’t get any urges myself…

lighting is great billy, very annalitical, :-} but where can we hear you bang them drums?
billyboy replied
Sorry dude, for that you gotta get yer butt to Brussels!!
billyboy
... and here’s another one… DW this time!
Dave Moilanen
Since I’m still looking for those missing bc’s I hope I can get away with saying this. You have one hell of a set BB!!
This photo is superb! The dark floor along with the gray wall compliments the wood grain of the drums to a tee! You’re killing me here BB!! I love it!!!
Dave Moilanen
DW is fantastic too!!
billyboy replied
Thanks Dave, but you need to check out the Staccato… the zoom view is at the end of the post!
And there’s no way you’re gonna find those elusive cells in a post about drum kits… but you might end up with some hot groupies! (yes, that’s GROUPIES, not GUPPIES !!)

Thanks Dawn, and if you dig drums, I’ve added a couple more…!

As you may know I’ve been fiddling with flash lately too. Do you have the wide angle flip down diffuser thingy for yours? One little tip I’ve heard is that you can do that to broadcast and soften the flash a little in situations like the ones behind…..which might give a slightly more even lighting on the drum on the left (fidock)......just a thought….
Impressive setup though, and I’m interested to know more about the remote light cell doodad…Have a look at Peter Marin’s journals…...he’s done some amazing things with flash…..and likes to keep us up to date with his latest escapades :)
billyboy replied
I do have the diffuser, and also tried some thicker perspex and actually found what I considered the best result by bringing the power of that flash under the snare to 1/4. This shot it`s at 1/2, and everyone seemed to like the extra light on the floor tom, so I left it as it was. Makes it look just a tad surreal, but nothing got burned out.
The cool thing about digital is that you can check the results of variables like this immediately and adapt, rather than having to do 3 rolls of film to make sure you got one good take. Kind of like having a poloroid back, but without the cost!
Thanks also for Peter`s link, which I`ll check out, and for the ineterst… as always, you make my day!
Barbara Sparhawk
Amazing to read your description of what it takes to make that work. I had no idea. I can see how well lit it is though, and the difference between promoting a product opposed to a performance or performer, and you sure have everything beautifully lit. The light bouncing on the underside of the cymbols is great. And I love the chair tucked in there. Yes, this is for a person, sit here. The floor works wonderfully. I don’t know why but it looks like music even though it’s a grid, maybe it’s the introduction of something mathematical and that sure fits. Well done, you pro you.
billyboy replied
It`s really cool you dig the floor.. and it`s just that crossed pattern of the grouting that attracted me to using this corner of our backline room as the `studio’. We had to move lots of stuff out of the way to create the space, but I think it was worth it. I also like the subtle reflections on the floor as the tiles are textured and not totally mat. This contrasts nicely against the lighter, totally mat wall behind.
Thanks for taking the time to look deep, as you always do… yer such a diamond… and don`t choo eva, NEVA die!
Mel Brackstone
ahhh yes, dialing down is great, if your flash allows it….one of mine doesn’t….and it’s an absolute dog! Digital does offer so many extra benefits in that respect….it’s been my best learning tool!! Love it!! xx
billyboy replied
Just thought you might want to check out the latest pic, our yellow Staccato kit. If you scroll down to the last view, you’ll get it big…
I think the way you use flash is amazing. Doing these shots for the studio is very confined and I can’t really freak out. Soon as I can get some time…
I just want to let you know how I appreciate your inspiration.

... and here`s the Pink Cadillac from Noble & Cooley. Amazing kit!!

PINK OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am loooooving the pink drums !!!!
You did a great shot taking these shots BB ….... BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL images I so love music so much and these shots just make me wannna let loose !!!!!

Amazing how many girls like pink drums. I actually dig metalflake blue. How cool is that!?
So ya gonna let loose or not?!!

And here’s a really cool Premier Elite model from the 70’s…
billyboy
... and now a lesser known Hayman kit from England, also from the 70`s…
billyboy
... and this is one of my personal favs… a Burgundy Sparkle Ludwig kit from the mid-60`s. This is in such pristine condition, like it was played for one gig and put in an attic somewhere for 40 years. Sounds amazing as it looks!!
billyboy
... how about a cute little yellow Rogers jazz kit??
billyboy
... or an even cuter little Dutch jazz kit from Royal? This one`s from 1957 and is one of the most used kits in the studio. Snare is a Leedy from 1924!
Dave Moilanen
Hey BB. Here’s on for the drummers. Keith Moon
billyboy replied
Dave, that clip was awesome. He was playing on a Vistalite kit, probably made by Ludwig, but I didn’t see any logos on the kit, so it could have been another make like Zicko.
Also seeing Carmine Appice doing the intro was cool… do you know Cactus? His drumming was so awesome in that group…
Thanks for digging up that historic document for me!!

Awesome BB .... ok so send me the Pink Set and I will ship out the Yankee Bike at the same time….Deal? ;)

Here`s the heaviest drumkit ever made… It`s a Sonor from the early 80`s. Built by Germans to last forever… ya gotta love `em!
billyboy
... and for those Terminator II fans, here`s a chrome Slingerland from the early 70`s. Glad I got a bit of experience with the flash heads before I did this one… getting those relections under control was challenging!
linaji
Of course I love the yellow one.. it’s cute and I love jazz.. before I read it I had decided I liked it.. and behold it is a jazzy kit.. cute.. and then I really like the Pink one.. just feels so hip!!! You have done an amazing job here .. I would love to see your website.. maybe when I begin to record.. I pop in!! tee hee…
billyboy replied
Hey Lina, Just had a chat with the yellow one and it thinks yer cute too!
billyboy
... and finally, here`s the Austyralian Blackwood kit from Fidock that used to be the main pic on this post till the yellow Staccato monster beat it up and took its place!
billyboy
... noipe, not done yet… Here`s a final large view of the Staccato just to blow yer minds !!!
Irish
HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP ....... very cool
Dave Moilanen
The new pic is fantastic!
linaji
I’m with Irish.. this is impossible!!! what group used this kit? Utterly well… friggen HOLY CRAP!!
billyboy replied
Wow BJ, you`re making me think now… I know Roxy Music used them for a while, and the Stones even used them for a video… Rammstein actually asked us if they could use ours for a video but we were worried they`d fck it up (I`d seen one of their DVD`s!!)... but to be honest, nothing really springs to mind. It`s just that they were out there in the early eighties and I just remember seeing them all over the place. Just found out today they`re still being made on special order!!
And yeah, they are indeed Holy Crap. The edges of the shells where they meet the skins is so roughly unfinished, you could never properly tune them…they just used to mic them with a shitload of EQ and they sounded massive. And they looked massive.
Thanks for the interest! xo
janniev
Wowwee, awesome, fantastic, this set is just soooo cool, and wicked, Bill – they just took first place in my favourites of all the kits on here. I’m afraid I also lost it when I saw them, I’m still close to rolling on the floor LMAO. I just love the colour and, as for the shape, well . . . they’re incredible! If they were on stage, they’d attract a huge audience just out of curiosity! My next favourite now is the burgundy Ludwig set, closely followed by the dark blue Hayman just ‘cause I love the colours. I think the “clinical” look of the “silver” Slingerland set is very interesting. As always, your meticulous attention to detail has paid big dividends – the photos are so clean and clear. I can’t wait to see the updated studio site, visitors, including potential customers, will be very impressed. Since Tracey’s your Number One groupie, I guess I have to settle for being Number Two groupie! Absolutely gorgeous.
billyboy replied
Jannie, thanks SO much for the compliments and for getting off generally on the kits. The Staccato is massive and it was really fun to set that one up and shoot it, especially as using the clear Vistalite snare I could let the flash go a bit wild on the rear wall.
Also glad you dig the Burgundy Ludwig. That kit is really a class act, and I thought the shot had a classy look to it so i was happy.
The Web designer has the drums sorted out now on our site. You can check it out as of now… just go to the main menu and cluck on BACKLINE, then DRUMS. Looks great!
And btw, I think Tracey`s still asleep on the couch, so you could slip into no. 1 groupie position and kick some shit before she even notices… gotta just be bad sometimes…
Andrew Bosman
Good grief Bill, anyone of these shots could have, should have, would have been used as a promo for the respective kits…. You nailed the lighting 100%.
billyboy replied
Hey Andrew, coming from such a massively talented photographer as yourself, those words totally made my day.
Didn`t realize you were no longer on my watchlist… don`t know what happened, but it`s now fixed…
Thanks so much for stopping by!!
Mel Brackstone
Wow Bill, the pink set has the most controlled lighting of all, it looks sooooo sedate and….pink and pretty :) LOVE the last one..just for the mad shapes!!! Reflections in the shot from the Royal are awesome! Mate, you really need to show us the website real soon…..I wanna look at these images in an easier format…..lol! ( I may have mentioned I’m lazy, yeah? ) :) You inspire me constantly!!!
xx
billyboy replied
Comming from such a massive source of inspiration for me, telling me that I inspire you is a truly massive compliment… so thanks for that and for digging pink and mad shapes and royal reflections!
The drum section of the site is ready, but the designer is having some annoying little tech problems he`s got to iron out… while we load more pictures and design ideas on him. Think his beard`s gonna turn white before we`re done with him…
I`ll let you know when it`s all presentable. It is SO gonna be amazing!!!

totally cool. I’d be in heaven…I’ve never seen any like the yellow ones before…I can just imagune how they sound :-)

SaRaHKnOwDoG
Wow. Thanx for putting up the other samples too. Great education in drum kit etiquette ; )
I like the look of the Hayman and the Premier. The Fidock is beautiful and its nice to see the floor tom on the floor! : )
Great looking shots and kits Billy. The shots are very professional, Good STuFF.
billyboy replied
That’s really cool you dig the Premier… it’s like a total classic rock kit with a BIG sound. the Hayman’s also a really cool British kit, but lesser known. Lots of drummers in Belgium played them in the 70’s.
And yeah, it’s nice to see a modern kit like the Fidock with a floor tom that doesn’t hang! There is a big difference in the sound as the feet transfer so much resonance to the floor… the Fidock system (forget what make it is) solves the problem by attaching feet to a hanging suspension system, like with the other toms. Sounds amazing!
Thanks for the comments, and especially for digging the Staccato (actually made by Hayman for some years)... and for the fav!!

My brother who has played since the early sixties and is still playing had a Hayman kit and I loved it, I love the look of the Staccato, but I would hated it on the road, need a bigger bus to cope with those stickyouty bits :-)
sadly I can’t play, I did however used to have to soundcheck the kit on the road, and there would always come that point when the FOH would yell down the monitor, “give me some time” to which I would always reply “5 O’Clock” and get up and walk away :-)
it’s a shame I never got to visit your studio when I was still touring looks like a really cool place, oh and I love the move the slider thing to see the pics, Verrrry Cool idea

I could tell you some hair raising stuff about very fanous people, but then I’d have to kill you !
there was this one when a young lady went back to a hotel room and was having some fun of the kind you imagine, and her and Chap decided it would be fun for her to put her head out of the window as it was right above the front door of the hotel, so they did
suddenly she felt the window pulled down on to her back and the tempo increase, then stop for a moment, and then resume with even more vigour, the young lady was by now getting to REALLY enjoy the moment, and reached the point where she just had to screw her eyes shut tight for a minute, as she calmed down she opened her eyes and looked down only to see the chap she had returned to the hotel with looking up at her from the pavement below and waving with a big cheesy grin on his face !
understandably she was none troo pleased, and flew into such a rage that the chap who had replaced her object of desire went onstage the next night with a massive black eye and indeed was restricted from his usual running and jumping around as he was still suffering the aftermath of her foot being well and truly planted in his nether region LOL
BTW, this happened in New York, the stage was at Madison Square Garden, and the guitarist’s restricted movement was commented on in the music press!
see I told you I would have to kill you, I’ll be round later with the boys . . . . . .although if that red is kicking around we could be persuaded to calm the killing to just a gentle maiming :-)

Jan, I have to say that kit blows everyone away… but so far nobody’s had the guts to use it in a session. BUT, one day there will be a brave soul who will get an amazing sound out of them and make a hit record. That’s why we never EVER throw anything away, even if everyone turns their nose up and walks away… in ten years time, it’s cult and there’s none left to be found. Except at ICP Studios!
Cheers for the return visit!!!

Wow Billy…so much involved to take a still life shot. I still hope and pray for a home studio someday…as far as I’m concerned this shot is awesome…as well as the drum set!!! Would have loved one of these growing up…but my parents hated my 5 foot speakers so it was outta the question, lol!
billyboy replied
You had FIVE FOOT SPEAKERS??
Wow. That’s awesome. May bass stack is barely 5 feet and that can bring down an earthquake-proof building if Ii crank it up!
But somehow I picture you as a drummer… and it’s not too late by a long shot. Don’t know if it’s the best post-op therapy though… you could always start with jazz and build yer way up to heavy metal.
Thanks for the compliment, and cool to see your amazing face again!

I own what I thought was an obscure Australian brand of drums called a Sleishman , but I’ve never heard of a Fidock, look amazing. Fantastic collection of vintage kits, thanks for sharing.
billyboy replied
Hey Travis, so cool you stopped by!
I`ll have to Google Sleishman… the Fidock system of construction is also used by Brady (also Aussie) where the shells are made from staves glued together… much in the same way you`d make a barrel. The “barrel” is then lathed down to size, only 6mm thick in the case of his snares so they`re feather light and very loud. And since there is so little glue compared to laminated finishes, the sound is only travelling through the wood and you get this rich, organic sound that is truly amazing. He`s actually changing his production method as production costs are too high. Pity. We`re happy we got the kit when we were still able…
Thanks for the interest, and for giving me an opportunity to get geeky about drums!!
Travis Easton
Familiar with Brady, they use some amazing aussie woods found nowhere else but Aus and as you mentioned the conga style barrel method too. Sleishman use the same shells as DW (Canadian I think) but have a fully suspended system where nothing touches the shells accept the skins, amazing drums. They’re Bass drums are huge. Got mine a few years back before the prices went orbital. I teach drums for a living so figured my students might be interested in checking your pics out. Another interesting but obscure Aus manufacturer is Spirit drums, apparently they lathe the shell from one solid block of wood using no glue whatsoever, hard core huh.

I’m one for simplicity when it comes to photo shots, from your descriptor Billy you’ve gone to a hell of a lot of set up. I probably would have used 1,000watt lighting with diffused Perspex over the light itself. (probably catch on fire knowing my luck). Damn that kit looks like Bart simpsons’ underpants or something..you’d wanna be a fine drummer as not to embarrass yerself with that kit under you ha haaaaa. My boy says “tool’s” drummer Danny Carey uses a Sonor kit, that German number looks great.
billyboy replied
Yup, I have to say the Sonors were built to last!
And speaking of the Germans… you need to take a look at this
I know you`re gonna love it!
We`re trying to coax ANY drummer to use the Staccato in a rhythm section… who knows, as these fads come and go and then resurface decades later, someone could make a gold selling hit with that sound…
I think most drummers are just scared it`s gonna bite. Or at least make them feel their sticks are too small…
Cheers for stopping by… lemme know what you make of the food fight!!

The Staccatos were truly amazing even if they sounded like shit.
They actually still make them to custom order… whether new or vintage, looks like you`d have to shell out about 5.000 Euros to get a complete kit.
If you want, send me a pic of Lotte getting animal behind a kit and I`ll PS her behind the Staccato…?

Cheers for that clip! J. Geils Band was so big in my history… wouldn’t say it was my fav group, but they were always there at the time and hearing that song brings it all back. Yer such a gem!!

I’m an old RUSH fan because of the drummer. Like most, I would sit and practice until I had blood blisters. Played Zildjian and Paragon, Roland, Pearl, and Rogers…Drove my parents quiet madd!!!
billyboy replied
I’m and old Grand Funk fan because of the bass player (their first live album… I still get orgasms…) And yeah, I know about blisters and callouses!
I only discovered recently that Zildjian made drums too. Don’t know much about Paragon, and I guess the Roland was electronic?
And of course you drove your parents mad. Drummers drive everyone mad!!
Cheers for the comment!

i should show this to my husband, he will DROOL over it!!! we are planning on buying a new drumkit and the discussion about which and what drive me bonkers~!! wouldn’t mind to stack the yellow one somewhere though….thin I could live with that!!! :)

Thanks so much for faving this Daisy!
Some of those kits, namely the yellow Rogers, the Royal (Dutch kit from the 50’s!), the blue Hayman, the Premier, the chrome Slingerland and yes, even the Staccato come from Arjen Vanderlinden in Amersfoort. He’s a drummer with a a band called Cover Story, and sells priviately for good prices. If you tell him what you’re looking for, he can often find it for you. If your hubby’s interested, I could shoot you his contacft details.
Thanks again for commenting and faving!!

First we need sort out a few thing within the family, we are seriously looking into buying an electronic kit for a few reasons, one of them is that our eldest son wants to play as well and we are a bit worried about the neighbours…but we are rather indecisive at this point!! If we go for an accoustic one I’ll drop you a line and you can give me his info! I am digging my brain, if Coverstory playd alot in the Utrecht area in the 80’s I think I have seen them! :) Thanks for the info!!! XXX!
billyboy replied
Just a thought… I think there are pads you can buy to place over the skins of acoustic kits to muffle the sound, and you can buy plastic cymbals. Might be a solution!

billyboy replied
Daisy, sorry I didn`t reply to this earlier… still coming down from the tokes I took myself!!
Indeed sad… if only he`d stayed black and left his nose alone… he was so cool looking in the 80`s and he had the moves right up till his death. But what an amazing persona… had everyone guessing right up till the end. So yeah, another toke… and life goes on. But memories are firm.

Cheers for the link Billy Boy. We are completely sold on the only solid palnet we know .. that of M.U.S.I.C.I.A.N.. in every respect.. can’t stop ourselves… drooling over all the delicious kit the great instrument makers.. very much including the high techy ones too .. along with the great greta craftsmen… kit to forfill our dreams…. and this image of yours is a crown bonanza jewel .
I love itsBIG BIG VOICE expressionist quality… yellow and black .. the colours toxity .. and danger.
Brilliant.
billyboy replied
Jeeze… the yellow and black…
Toxity and danger and… radiation!!
The Staccato does have a big voice, but as the shell edges were so badly finished they were almost impossible to tune accurately. So in the 70`s, they used to just EQ the hell out of them and they sounded great for live shows. Recording them is more problematic so the groups we record tend to avoid the kit. But one day, someone will try it, the record will go gold and everyone else will wanna use it. That`s the way it goes. And it`s why we never EVER sell anything!
Thanks again for looking!

Your comment inspires me Billy boy… in the vision the boom of these splendiferous drums literally knocks the judiciary sensless.. to the flOOR. There they flail powerless in their mediocrity. as the revolutionary populous rises up . screaming their battle cry for their L.I.B.E.R.T.Y .
Bring it on.. the white witch hears the clinker gold in the chest of FREEDOM.

HOLY MOLY THAT’S GREAT!!!!
I have some drummer friends who would LOVE this…
How would it sound with surf music?
billyboy replied
OK… lemme think about that a sec…
How would the Staccato sound with surf music?
Probably like a hot-rodded 200 Watt Marshall stack cranked up to volume 12 would sound like with the Buena Vista Social Club…
Hey, come to think of it, that might just sound pretty farken cool!!
Thanks for the comment!!

What an amazing kit, never seen one of these before, looks like something Cozy Powell would play, really OTT! Brilliant pic and this page makes real interesting reading.
billyboy replied
Trouble with you Nigel is you’re not old enough… probably never even seen Agostini race!
Everybody played on Staccato drums in the late 70’s and I bet Cozy had more than one kit. Hard to fiund these days in good condition, and when you do it can cost over 5.000 Euros for a single bass drum set. We were lucky to get this one for much less… though no body’s really used it yet in the studio. One of these days, someone’s gonna record a hit on it and everyone’s gonna want one.
Cheers for the interest and for commenting!

I love this image too. I thought it was a digital manipulation when I first saw it. I can’t imagine those drums would have very good resonance because of their odd shape. Perhaps this is what causes the poor tone you describe. Amazing kit though!
billyboy replied 27 days ago
Cheers Mark!
They had a problem with the finishing round the edge that comes in contact with the skin so they were impossible to tune. But it was more of a voiume thing on stage… you just added a shitload of EQ and got on with the gig. Unfortunately, they don`t work too great in the studio. We keep the kit set up in the backline room over the entrance just to blow everyone away!
Cheers for the fave!!
