Sparkle & Smack!

Sparkle & Smack!

We’re renewing some of the pics on our studio website and so we thought it might be cool to show our collection of snare drums.

The cool thing about snares is that although a drummer might go for a complete kit with a certain dominant sound or attitude, it’s the snare drum that has the most dynamic attack, and so changing this component can fine tune the attitude to fit a particular track. And since we’ve started seriously collecting them, it’s been amazing to discover how different sizes, materials, methods of construction, and types of finishings can completely alter the sound.

Plus the fact that they just look so cool. The oldest one is a Leedy that dates from 1924, and the newest additions are some recent developments from DW… one of these being a huge 16 inch diameter (most are 14”) that sounds totally MASSIVE!

It wasn’t easy getting all the reflective surfaces under control, but I found that placing the 2 flash heads (with soft boxes) at the most oblique angle possible helped greatly. I took 4 bracketed exposures and took bits from the most underexposed of the 4 to replace areas of the main shot that were overexposed. Although I was too far away to capture the writing on the labels accurately enough to read them, I was happy that they were at least easily recognizable in their shapes.

EOS 5D (nope, NOT the MKII !), 16-35L at 35mm, f13 for the main shot, 2 x Elinchrom 250 W flash heads with soft box.

Thanks for lookin’!

Great subject, unusual and interesting, is this how you found them or did they need some re-arranging?

  • billyboy replied

Do you mean re-arranging on the shelves? That little bit of work took me a whole morning!
Lots of the snares have a hardware arrangement that doesn’t let them stand straight… so I had to put spaces underneath these in the right places. I also grouped them together according to manufacturer, which actually made for an attractive randomness in the colors.

    Well, you DID ask!

  • Dave Moilanen

Ever feel like a kid in a candy store BB?? WOW!! This photo is pure brilliance!! It has it all, style, depth, dimension, color, pizazz….hell, this sucker even comes with it’s own soundtrack!!

Thanks Dave… And the candy store thing? Yeah, I get that like every day!
    Cheers for the fav!!

Dave, that you bought this so blows my mind… doesn`t get much cooler than that, yeah?
    Cheers man, you`re amazing!

Btw Dave, I made some color corrections, so this is what you`ll now be getting… same thing, just better!

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

Wow Bill, what a magical image! Love all the shine and gloss, and the shapes! I’m musically illiterate, and even more percussionally so, but I like what I see!

  • billyboy replied

Snares are definite eye candy, and like with guitars, that`s one of the reasons they`re fun to collect. For me, one of the things that makes this shot work is that by using our fav 16-35L on the 35 mm mark, the upper and lower left/right extremes are mildly distorted, giving the shot a slightly expansive vibe that I think a narrower angle would not.

Thanks for your percussionally illiterate but Brackstoneally cool comment, and for the fav!

  • Barbara Sparhawk

    Barbara Sparhawk

Superb for all that color and sound-in-a-box. This is wonderful, billyboy, the whole picture is alive. I wanna play! When I was about 12 a new kid at the school got his own special auditorium event for an hour of his drum solos. EVERY girl in the school fell in love with him after the first 2 seconds. 8 years later I was hanging out on Broadway in NYC, standing outside the closed doors while Gene Kruppa played inside. The bouncers kept non-paying fans out, but every time a legit customer went in you’d get the full blast. The front window was painted black up to about 5 feet, if you jumped you could see inside to the stage. Ah drummers.

  • billyboy replied

I always had you down for someone who could dig a drummer, which is cool… after all, SOMEONE`S gotta love `em!!

The fourth snare from the left on the third row from the top is a Slingerland Gene Kruppa signature model from 1957, and is one of the most popular here.

Thanks for taking the time to look and reflect, as usual… you are such a massive diamond!

  • raymondo

    raymondo

    Yep…..top row ..3rd drum…....Chrome 2000 or 2002 mines about 35 years old.

  • billyboy replied

Interesting you should point this out. This snare is not actually chromed, but I believe it is in aluminum as were the Chrome 2000`s. The finish is kind of a roughly lathed metal surface. Ser. no. is 6060, but I`m not sure of the date. I know it`s old cause the strainer is the original type where the strands were attached directly to the mechanism… although it`s since been replaced with a modern type snare. Sounds great in any case.

    Cheers fore the interest!!

  • Paul Starkey

    Paul Starkey

Hey Billyboy, I’ve got a Tama, original 1978 model, still kicking.

  • billyboy replied

    That`s wicked!
We`ve been toying with the idea of getting one of the Warlock series… you know the snares with the 3mm thick bell brass that weigh 50 kg… but the vintage Tamas are way cool. Don`t know if Frank Beard was playing on Tama back then, but he sure gove the company a boost with his amazing custom kits!

this is glorious eye candy for the inner magpie…all that glitter & shiny shiny things! Plus the beautiful symmetry of the shelves…instant fav

  • billyboy replied

Thanks Cat for lickin’ the candy!
The shelf symmetry was a bit of an issue… beause of the 35 mm angle, I had to do a bit of warping to get the racks straight. I also darkened them as they were a sort of light beige color that really didn`t go well with the background. Just shows what a couple of simple tweaks can do.
    And cheers for the fav!!

  • roy skogvold

yeah they look pretty cool Billy. nice shot and thanks for the snaredrum lesson :)

I don´t know much about drums at all, but I just bought a tablaset and am trying to learn to play a bit…... but have realized that the dream of being the new Norwegian Ravi Shankar will take AT LEAST a year to accomplish. ;) hehe…...

    kiriteka…....Roy

  • billyboy replied

I don`t imagine there`d be masses of tabla players in Norway, so at least you shouldn`t have to fight heavy competition to get gigs… having said that, I don`t really know. You might just start a new fad. So when you`re ready to cut your first record, remember ICP Studios, Brussels, yeah?

Thanks for stopping in Roy, and kiriteka right back atcha!!

Bill, you’ll have to put your website link next to this ;)

  • billyboy replied

Mel, that’s an excellent idea. Should have some good changes to the site done by the end of the week, so will probably do it then. We’re now working on the complete drum kit shots (11 of them), then we’ll want a couple of massive guitar and amp shots… there’s so much to do in so little time.

The pics on our website now look so dated compared to what we’re doing now so I’ll try to resist the temptation and wait till there’s some good stuff to show off.

Cheers for the interest, you’re such a doll!

Mel, sometimes councelling works. But if nothing can be resolved, then perhaps individual psychotherapy is the answer. Or chocolate. I think you need to take them both on a vacation to Belgium… they can go off together to Wittamer while we get stuck into the vodka. See, everybody`s happy, yeah?

    Mel Brackstone

  • billyboy replied

Scrumptiousness. That has GOT to be word of them month. And you can bet I’ll be using it lots from now on…
And yeah, you can also bet there’s some pretty good stories behind most of the vintage ones… it’s always the drummers who tell the best tales!

I don’t know the first thing about drums, despite a very brief flirtation with them in 1st year high school, but, I do know I love this photo, Bill. All those shiny, shiny goodies make a feast for they eyes! My favourites have to be the three on the R/H side of the second shelf down, very closely followed by the ones at each end of the bottom shelf. The way the Fidock’s stand out is quite remarkable. After looking long and hard, I’ve changed my opinion about the gray shelving, I agree with your reasoning. I wish I knew more about photography and equipment, but, the work you put into this is obvious in the wonderful result.

  • billyboy replied

Jan, you`re such a saint for faving this and for actually picking out your fav snares!
I figured you`d agree about the shelves… the beige just didn`t make it. And thanks also for the compliment and appreciation.

Unfortunately, on the weekend, my bass, my bass amp head, my trumpet and my flugelhorn were stolen from my Garage so I am on the insurance claim track now! By the way, I resisted making a “musician / drummer” joke before… hope you appreciate my resistance! The photo still hasn’t loaded. I had a look at the place. That studio setup looks pretty serious. I went looking for bands I knew. I assume Simple Minds is the same band as the famous 1980s one. The in-house chefs are a nice touch! Where is this studio anyway?

The studio`s in Brussels Mark, and if you`re ever in our neck of the woods and are looking for a place to record…

Our backline has no brass, but when we need a horn section, we know a group of awesome local musicians who are world class and nail everything on the first take. That makes them cost effective as in a studio, time is serious money!
And yeah, Simple Minds… we mixed a live version of Alive & Kicking. Not many Aussies unfortunately. So I`m relying on YOU to spread the word!!
Thanks for the interest and for the faves mate.
I`m busy now intonating guitars but will check out your pf when I get home tonite. Serious pity about your theft… hope the insurance pays up quick!

So do I…. fingers crossed. I went to Brussels in 2004 but I am just doing cover band stuff at the moment so not likely to be recording in the near future. I know a couple of originals artists so I will let them know that if they want to take their recording to Brussels!!!...... flights kind of expensive though!

Terrific shot! You wouldn’t happen to have a 1970s/80s Singerland Maple in there would you?

    Many thanks Susan!
Our Slingerlands are third rack from the top, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in from the left. All 3 are from the 60`s. The gold one, a Gene Krupa sig model, and the blue swirl are in solid maple… the metalflake blue one is a student model, which is a combination of rosewood shell and maple reinforcement hoops… and all three sound amazing!
    Cheers for the interest!!
