Pumpkin Lamp
Inspired by those devices run by the electricity generated from vegetables… this pumpkin generated so much voltage that it burst the bulb!
I did this by actually shooting a pellet through the bulb, aimed at a copper foil switch opposite. When the pellet hit the switch, it triggered my flash and so the action of the glass popping was frozen. Electrodes and coiled wire are props, but the bulb was actually lit (wire hidden behind the pumpkin) and I set my exposure for the lit bulb. Nothing done with Photoshop here, just pure fun with film, flash and pellet gun!

I am not clear on how the pellet triggered the flash

Deri Dority
So incredibly clever!! I want one of those pumpkin lamps (my zucchini lamp burned out).
billyboy
Thanks everyone for making my day with your comments!
Derid, the zucchinis do tend to burn out even when you go to a higher voltage bulb. But the pumkins you gotta watch… I ran my airco for a week off this rig. Just so long as the Russians don`t find out, so let`s keep this between us for now… I suggest you wait till Nov. 1st when they`ll be going cheap!
Cathleen Taraw...
Wow, electric light pumpkin.

billyboy
Many thanks all of you for liking this and for the encouragement.
Thorley, the copper switch is two pieces of thick copper foil, 20×20 cm square, separated at the top by a 1 cm thick length of plastic, and hanging parallel to each other from a stand. A wire is connected top each piece at the top, and the other ends of the wires connected to my flash trigger. When the pellet hits the foil, the two pieces make momentary contact, thus closing the circuit and triggering the flash. The speed of the pellet insures that the glass is caught frozen in mid flight. Piece of cake. Used this same technique in Midnight Cocktail, and this was a glass full of water so the effect was much more impressive.
Lucia, making the shot didn’t take long. Cleaning up afterwards did, as I shot 6 bulbs to make sure I had a good shot. I’m still finding bits of glass in the kitchen, and in the end, only this shot of the 6 that worked. Shows the value of perseverence!
Helene Kippert
Cool! :o)
Heather Meadows
wow such a great idea and all over perfect shot!

Mate, you have way too much spare time on your hands….LOL! Thank goodness for that too, otherwise we’d never see these outstanding shots! What a fabulous setup!

As usual, quirky creativity, billyboy. I laugh everytime I see this. What took you so long to put it up?
It’s definitely an area you should return to from time to time.

I thought this was a new jack-o-lantern until I read of your experiment…fascinating image and what a shot!

Thanks for the tip billyboy, I have loved photographing things burning breaking splashing and always will. What I do with the splashing is quite easy because it is so slow but your method is fantastic. Sadly I am not sure if I can explore this with my battery powered 580ex speed light.
But techical limitations can be the birth of invention and an asset to the open minded.
Shannon Beauford
Incredible! I would love to do something like this. I need to study up on high speed photography and see if I can pull something like this off too. Great shot!
kookylane
AWESOME!!! thanks for sharing the background story too, makes it even more awesome!!! respectful bow.

BRILLIANT photo! very very well executed! AWESOME shots
Travis Seale
this is awesome
stevenlove
Very creative. It must have taken a lot of preparation to insure it would work on the first shot. If you try something like this again try and get a macro of the bulb exploding.
KathyT
This is great! Very imaginative. So this is how you pass the time when it’s raining in Brussels?

Pamela B
Fascinating work!!! I’ll bet you have fun with all of this pellet shooting!!
Greatly creative!
billyboy replied
Yup, total fun… but haven’t done it in years. I used to have time for doing stuff that takes hours to set up and even longer to clean up afterwards. So sad the way time seems to vanish into thin air as you get older.
Having said that, I have no problem spending a whole day working on a pic in Photoshop…
Thanks for commenting!
Paola Jofre
:) what fun Billy…...hard work setting up for it paid off….Great job!! I love the frozen glass….
Peter Zentjens
This is very, very impressive,
loved reading how you pulled this one off.

That is totally cool!! Thank you for explaining how you did that cause I was wondering how many shots you took. Incredible..

Wow, so cool you dug this!
Did in in the film days, before I even knew what Photoshop was!
I used to have so much time on my hands to do stuff like this… now I just veg out on RB when I’m not at work.
Bed for me now, but I’ll be hittin’ yer pf soon…

Consider it done!!
Steve Chapple
Outstanding, this is the best I’ve seen.
billyboy replied
Thanks Steve, glad you dig it!
Was actually shot on film, so I had no way of knowing if the shot worked or not. I did 15 takes (!) and this was the only one that came out reasonable. Interestingly enough, the pellet was shot from the right… normally I would have expected the big splatter of glass to be on the exit side, but for some reason the opposite happened… go figure!
And cheers for the fav mate!!
nishagandhi
wow
billyboy replied
Hey Nisha!
You dig Pumpkin Lamp…
That is SO cool!!
Thanx for stopping by!

A piece of photographic genius, not least because it wasn’t made in photoshop!

Thanks a lot Steve. A great compliment coming from someone who knows as well as you what pure photography is about.
