BillyBoy`s Office
If my Sanctuary is where I play, then this is where I work.
ICP Studios was founded by my Brussels high school friend John Hastry in the early 80`s which started out as a single recording studio in his dad`s factory. Now 25 years later, it`s one of the biggest residential studio complexes in Europe if not the world.
Aside from the 4 studios full of new and vintage audio gear and mics, the pool, the gym, the garden (hey, musicians gotta have barbecues, yeah?), 22 rooms and apartment lofts, in house catering and smiling staff, we`ve got an incredible instrument backline. With over 100 new and vintage guitars, as many amps, 11 complete drum kits, over 40 snare drums, a large collection of cymbals and percussion, a bunch of really cool vintage synths and over 500 guitar effects pedals, musicians can come and use all this stuff to record with free of additional charge. Total inspiration heaven.
I took some promotional shots today, and this one is of our backline hall where I guard our stuff and make sure it all stays in perfect working order for recording. We do our best to keep up with the latest gear while maintaining the vintage vibe for which we`re best known. If you`re into music gear, being surrounded by this stuff all day is amazing. I`m a pretty lucky guy!

That doesn’t look like work ….... that looks like FUN!!! Great capture.
billyboy replied
Lori, I’ve been told that many times. It’s work in the sense that it’s busy, especially when all four studios are working… but can’t deny it’s fun!
RavenSoul
I agree with Lori Too much Fun! Thanks for sharing BB! xx
billyboy replied
Vonne, it’s like living in a cage with 500 flapping ravens… so you know as well as I do that there’s NEVA too much fun!!
Foxfires
My jaw. WHERE DID MY JAW GO?
?! You’ve singlehandedly snapped it right off my face. I think my dog just ran off with it. LOLOL
Wow. That is like Willy Wonka’s Music Factory. pets screen adoringly
billyboy replied
That’s a pretty good description. It’s VERY MUCH like Willy Wonka’s factory here, and the staff are just as nutz!
And I really hope yer dog hasn’t buried your jaw in the garden… is it a Jack Russel? They do shit like that and then come back and hump yer leg like nothing’s happened. And when you ask him where he’s buried it, he says “Jaw? What jaw…?” Grin & bear it, yeah?

Wooooowwwww…..

Ooooh! Billy! Let me at those acoustic beauties there on the left…... :0) You certainly keep a very clean and orderly shop – your clients must LOVE coming here, and no wonder you love working here! Nice shot Billy!
billyboy replied
Our clients DO love coming here;;; the hard part is finding them. When you’re outside the UK and the US, and you’re not in the Caribbean or some other tropical paradise, you’re off the mainstream of studios popular with the big artists. We’re hoping this latest round of pics will attract some amazing players.
Cheers for the compliment Jen!
Jeff Burns
WOW you do Rock this is awesome Billy.
billyboy replied
Jeff, I happen to know you rock a bit yerself!
billyboy
Thanks for looking guys, and I`ll get back to your comments. In the meantime, here`s the big view…

Hey TJ! Know any up and coming groups in Poole that love gear and wanna make a hit album? Send ‘em on over!
Dave Moilanen
I can see it now BB, every morning when you wake up your screaming, ‘No! No! I don’t want to go!’ ;-)
Looks like a wonderful place! Thanks for sharing!
billyboy replied
Yeah, gotta admit… getting out of bed’s not been a problem.
Looks like you’ve got some new stuff on planet Moilanen… think I’ll stop over in a bit for a look…
Mel Brackstone
Now I know why you needed the 16-35mm!!!! Awesome workplace, BB!!
billyboy replied
I toyed with the idea of doing a stitched pano that people could scroll… but the trick with publicity is making an impact with a single glance. It’s all people have time for these days. So yeah, the 16-35 was a good solution as I was able to get most of the important space in. The high viewpoint helped too.
It was hard getting a good exposure everywhere, so I bracketed and this is a combination of the best parts from each shot. Sort of a manual HD procedure but without the effect.
Thanks for giving me an excuse to rabbit on…

This looks like play not work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Music man. What more could a billy boy ask for?
billyboy replied
The butter scotch color guitar in the right rack at the front, second from the right, is a Music Man original from the 70’s. You were teasing me, yeah?

THERE IS NO ONE INT HIS WORLD THAT MY HUSBAND WOULD’T KILL TO BE YOU. He has his baby…..........(67 Re-issue blue Fender and his special Fender amp, has some customizing or something!)............. When I show him this image and your story…...(I am at work at the moment).....he should land on your doorstep in about 48 hours…........LOLOLOL. What a MAGIC world you live in, my boy. : ))))))) xxLinda
billyboy replied
That 67 reissue is probably one of the Japanese reissues from ‘97… not the best electronics, but awesome build quality. If it is, he should never sell it. All the Jap Fenders will be so collectible in the years to come. In fact they already are!
So he’s got 31 hours to go… he can bring the guitar AND the amp. Then we’ll convince him it’ll be too much trouble for him to take them home… and we’d REALLY take good care of them for him…
Thanx for diggin’ the magic!
xxBilly!

Dang! I think I just beame a groupie…
I think the whole bubble just turned green BB. lol
billyboy replied
That works out nicely. Just so happens we like groupies!
When’s yer flight?
Angela Stewart
Ok, I can imagine you leaping out of bed each morning, punching the air, and high fiveing everyone you pass on the way to “work”, right? You’re so very blessed to have a job you love…but I guess you know that :)
billyboy replied
Hey Angela, gimme FIVE!
And yeah, I knew that… but I like it when you say it!
funkyfacestudio
What an office Billy ! where is the paper work and the garbage bin ? ;)
well at least you know you are blessed to have this great gig ! but I will be terribly jealous if I find out that you are also allowed to wear slippers to work ! he he he …just kidding
billyboy replied
Funny you should say that… the paper work was stashed on the rack out of sight behind the snares, and I swear at the last second before taking the shot, I spotted the garbage can by my desk and slid it round the back. Lisa, you are SO perceptive!
And funny you should mention the slippers thing. Just recently our engineers have been taking to working in their stocking feet… during the summer they went barefoot!
Cheers for blowing me away… as usual!!
Shanina Conway
My husbands jaw dropped…..would love to record there and play ;)
billyboy replied
You got a dog? Foxfire’s actually ran off with HER jaw after seeing this, so tell hubbie to be careful.
And whatcha waiting for? Let’s work out some dates, yeah?
SaRaHKnOwDoG
Holy CraP !!!! How lucky are you !!?? Is that a Destroyer on the table ??
billyboy replied
Hey Sarah! That’s actually a Korina Explorer. The Destroyer is the one that fell on yer foot and broke yer toe… remember??
Tania Rose
the only thing i’m sad about, is that i can’t just pop over there for a coffee
billyboy replied
Don’t be sad, just get yer butt over here…
We do Lavazza espresso. It’s to die for. When’s yer flight?
louise
WOW Billyboy….!!
Living and working the PASSION!!!
It doesn’t get any better than this….!!
cheers
billyboy replied
Louise, it DOES get better than this. We’re still waiting for AC/DC to book!
Cheers2U!
Cathie Tranent
Hey Billy .. that is just kid in a candy store stuff!! Acoustic guitars, far left, fourth from the front – that’s not a Samick Resonator is it??
billyboy replied
It’s actually a Continental 12-string resonator… you were close as the Samick Dobros also have the chromed sound holes. Do you play?
janniev
OH MY, my fingers are just about . . . speechless! I need to study this in depth, but I can already see several wonderful and interesting things in there. Billy, you are truly one of the blessed.
billyboy replied
Jannie, I CAN’T WAIT till you study this in depth… hey, could be another Sanctuary deal, yeah?
Here’s a clue… that red thing on the left desk should look familiar…
Please come back for another look!!!
SaRaHKnOwDoG
No. Was not a Destroyer that fell on me foot, was a cheap arse replica of a stratacaster, red and very heavy, solid body. A torch actually ! Embarrassing uh !? If only it was the destroyer, because of the pointy bits it may have worked out ? : ]
Wow ! I saw the most amazing three year old drummer on u tube tonight ! : ] THREE years old !!!!
Hope all is well Billy and beware of flimsy guitar straps …..... although in that office i doubt you would have any two dollar shop guitar straps !
funkyfacestudio
Ta ! I knew it ! and barefoot no less LOL, it sounds like my dream job….....well the barefoot part anyway.
Heather Rivet...
outstanding what a great place to work
Cathie Tranent
I don’t play Billy – but the rest of my family do – Mark’s just sold his resonator – it was a spider bridge, and he really wants a biscuit bridge.!
billyboy replied
Too bad he had to sell. The biscuit bridge models tend to give a stronger sound while the spider bridge models have more intricate overtones, but are more difficult to adjust to perfection. Both have their virtues.
We all went through the process of selling our gear to afford the instruments we desired, and often regretted it… but if we’d had the insight to know we needed to keep that pre-CBS Strat or the ‘76 Les Paul Gold Top, they probably wouldn’t be worth as much as they are today.
I’m sure no matter what kind of bridge he plays, he’ll make it sing!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks for giving me an excuse to rabbit on…
Any time :D
Paola Jofre
It’s a playground :) .....you are so lucky Billy…..what a great place to work :)
billyboy replied
Yup, a definite playground for the wicked. I doubt if heaven’s as much fun as this place!
Tania Rose
ooo, you make it sound so tempting. Got my own studio to build first, so perhaps in a coupla years, when my dollars are actually worth enough to buy a ticket!!

clarkey
It could well be another Sanctuary in the making, only time will tell. LOL
I keep coming back and I STILL can’t find the words I need to tell you how much this image speaks to me, Bill. You can’t imagine how rare that is! The thing that strikes me most deeply, each time, is just how strongly “you” are stamped on this room. The second thing is how much I would like to be able to walk into it and sit, just absorbing it, before exploring every thing, nook and cranny, it would be like a dream come true.
Unfortunately, I don’t recognize the red thing, I can only guess it’s your Easy button? It’s not big enough for me to see properly, even in the larger pic, so, it’s just stab in the dark! (I went back and checked your Sanctuary, and the Easy button is the only thing I can see which it might be.)
clarkey
P.S.: What’s the stuffed toy sitting propped against the upright of the shelves in the midlle, on the right hand side? It doesn’t look like a monkey! And the black thing with a white collar just behind the right-hand desk?
billyboy replied
OK JannieV,
First of all, kudos for honing in on the Easy Button. Did you really think I`d get one for the Sanctuary without getting one for this place??
That yellow “monkey” is actually Flat Eric who you might not have heard of, but when you see the video I just linked you to, you`ll ghet the picture and you`ll get totally blown away at the same time!
Black thing with a collar? That`s my magnifying lamp on an extendible arm, without which I would end up soldering my fingernail instead of the transistor lug every time…
But ya missed the coolest thing of all… on the left desk, rear right corner, Mr. James Brown!! Push the button and he sings & dances to I Feel Good . Doesn`t get much cooler than that, yeah?
clarkey
No, I didn’t miss Mr James Brown, I hadn’t finished exploring yet! Not much coooler!
How long have you had the Easy buttons? LOO, I guess if they tickle your fancy that much, it would make sense to have one in each place! Does this one still work! Or did you wear it out before the one in your Sanctuary?
OMG, LMSAO, Flat Eric is incredible. I hadn’t heard of it, but, damn, that’s pretty good. From what mad imagination did it arise? You’ll have to post a bigger pic of it. Pretty please?
Okay, now that’ve you told me what the white collar is, I can it. Then the black thing behind it is . . . ? Looks like something made from fabric?
clarkey
LOL Apologies for my usual lousy typing and proof-reading, I’m sure you can work out the missing words and the incorrectly spelled one
billyboy replied
OK Jannie, I`ll try to get a couple detail shots this weekend.
Don`t exactly know what you mean about the fabric behind the lamp… only thing I can see behind the lamp are the amps… you got better eyesight than me!!
Globalphotos
Ooooooo can I play in there?? !!! Such a cool office :))
billyboy replied
Lemme see now… do I need a gorgeous assistant who`s not afraid to dangle on ropes in breathtaking canyons?
Yer hired!
Globalphotos
Woohoo !!!
Checking flights :D
clarkey
My eyesight is pretty lousy, Bill, I can only guess along with you – the amps, I just can’t see enough to be take a “good” guess. I suggested fabric only ‘cause I can see that it’s not a straight line down the lefthand side of whatever it is.
billyboy replied
No sweat Jan… still don`t really know exactly what you`re looking at. Think you need to grab a flight and show me in person…
At least you discovered Flat Eric. And if you think that clip was cool, check him out in the Levis ad . You totally won`t believe it!!
clarkey
Okay, will do so as soon as I finish uploading a pic on the other me. (Using hubby’s computer for this, he doesn’t know I’ve bookmarked RB on it!) I don’t know what I’m looking at either and I’d catch a flight if it wasn’t so damn f*(&%^ing cold over there, it’s worse then here at the mo!
clarkey
LMFAO, I saw that Levi’s ad sometime ago (don’t know how long ago but, it wasn’t this year). I didn’t take much notice of it at the time ‘cause I don’t watch ads, but, having actually watched it now, yeah, it’s very funny. Don’t be upset, please, I’m just an advertiser’s nightmare – I’m too cyncial to believe much advertising. It is _very_clever and quirky, but . . .
C J Lewis
Unbelievable play room loaded with goodies in there billyboy…sure puts the old EMI Studios 301 to shame…muso’s had to supply their own instruments there…or hire them in…all they got in the deal was the studio with control room and if they didn’t bring their own…an audio engineer. Great shot :)
billyboy replied
We know what the musos get off on, and we`ve learned over the years that if the artists are happy and inspired, the project goes well. Cool thing about the availability of all the stuff is that if it looks good, you bring it into the session and let it fly… if it doesn`t, you just put it back and try something else. Easy peasy. And as a bonus, the young bands (often just starting out with their first album) get to try out gear they`d otherwise never get their hands on. This policy is one of the major attractions that gets us customers, so it`s win/win for everyone!
Thanks so much for diggin’ the vibe!
linda858100
VERY NICE,
billyboy replied
Yeah? Well it just so happens that we`ve got a chopper pad on the roof, so why not just fly over and check us out? I think this shot needs you with a Lake Placid Blue Strat and a stiletto-heeled shoe resting on a `62 Fender Bandmaster right smack in the center. We got a deal?
Jason Moses
My God, I would lock myself in your office. How have I not seen this photo yet?
billyboy replied
Jase, I was wondering that myself!
If you`re ever in the neighborhood, I`ll personally lock you in!!
JohnOfLightning
like the matrix, only this is real
Ralph Olsson
Wow!!! Grateful to you for allowing us to have a peek at where you work man, awesome.
billyboy replied
Thanks for stopping by Ralph. Think of us when you do your next album?!
Irish
Ok so I have a hidden talent, I can SING….....book me a studio ;)
billyboy replied
With our gear and with what our engineers can do with vocals, you don’t even really have to sing…
Yer BOOKED!

do you remember that diddy? NAME THAT TUNE!? :)
billyboy replied
Don`t remember the name of it, but it used to drive me NUTZ… especially the ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!
How about let`s do a Jersey Harley Babe Remix on that one?!
linaji
I jumped in just in time to see who and what makes you so electric… not only do you spend time creating amazing work.. you play and stay within such great intent and vibe! You did good this time around and insisted you be happy.. it shows in your choices and creations.. what an inspiration you are to me.. I work down the street from DreamWorks.. and did not know it!! I have been manifesting such wonders.. and you are a joy to behold.. LIFE IS SUPPOSE TO BE FUN!
billyboy replied
Lina, you are so right. We don’t always know where our choices will lead us, but we are blessed when we feel they are right and in the fullness of time they bring us happiness. I can see from the diversity of your portfolio that you embrace life and you understand the true meaning of fulfillment. And you are a true diamond for writing one of the loveliest notes that’s ever been attached to any of my pictures. I don’t understand what absence of mind kept me from putting you on my watchlist, but I’ve since corrected that lapse of awareness.
Now, rather than take out Mr. Spielberg’s garbage, why don’t you just come and work for (and play with) us?? XO
linaji
LOLO DAMN YOU MADE MY DAY.,.. COFFEE BB??
billyboy replied
Cheers… and welcome to the Emerald Forest!
mikepaulhamus
man this is too good… do what you love and you never work a day in your life….
so very cool, excellent.
billyboy replied
Mike, I swear it has its ups & downs. But mostly, the downs still rock.
Thanks for passing by and diggin the vibe!
Peter Hill
Lucky bastard. I’m an Australian, we can say that. :) I can’t begin to imagine the vibe happening in this place. Which makes you a sadist too. Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my keyboard.
billyboy replied
Peter, there`s a few Amercians who think I`m a lucky fcking sonofabitch, so I truly think you Aussies are a polite and engaging species in comparison. And yes, I am a sadist.
There is truly a vibe in this place, but it`s a big job making sure all this stuff works perfectly to be used in recording. Having said that, I can think of lots of things I`d rather not do than this!
Many thanks for commenting and diggin the vibe. And drooling is good for you. Like Guiness.
syd baker
Is that a Gibson Hummingbird and a paisley Strat?? Good Lord! I still love guitars even though I don’t play anymore, sounds like a dream job to me! Like your photos a lot, cats too! My office is a cube, but I feel lucky to have one nowadays!
billyboy replied
You’re right about that… everything seems like it’s hanging on a thread these days and every booking we get is a blessing!
that’s actually an early 60’s J200, so you’re not far off… the pickguard looks similar to the Bird. And that IS a Paisley Strat… unfortunately not an original. If it was it wouldn’t be sitting out in the open collecting dust! It’s actually a recent Japanese reissue, but it plays beautifully and sounds hot. I believe the Jap models will be the to-die-for collectibles of the future, so if you can get your hands on one, DON’T let it go!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Here’s a link to the studio where you’ll find lots of cool pics and some music too!
See ya later!
linaji
Came to hear you talk shop before bedtime..
Have a wonderful day BB..ox
billyboy replied
Hey Lina, could you pass me the module extractor? The mic pre on channel 45 on the 88R desk crackles… could be a cold solder on one of the transistors on the channle amp card, but it could also be a bit of oxidation on the phase switch contacts. Tell ya what… could you hop down and find me the CR60? We`ll just spray all the switches in the mic input section and see if that does the trick before re-doing all the solder joints. Plus I dig the smell of that stuff. Kinda gets me high…
Oh, just come here and gimme a big hug… the desk can wait…
OX right back atcha!
linaji
Do you know I had one of those soooo tooo good feeling belly laughs.. the kind that vibrate through your whole body…. yep… I think it is the crackles or is that my cackels!! look for email..later.. still laughing.. jezzz bottle that stuff it feels so good!!
Amanda McLennan
How I wish I was a better musician – and lived in Europe, this place is awesome.
Damn my fat uncooperative fingers.
billyboy replied
Amanda, if you were a better musician and lived in Europe, you’d probably be gigging in some bar where there’s a full house only cause it’s pissing with rain outside and everyones come in to get dry… instead of bombing through the wide open outback pickin’ up hitchhiking wallabies.
Seems you’ve got a life lots of Europeans would die for!!
Come an visit anyway. Pack yer didgeridoo and we’ll jam!!
ToastedGhost
WOW Billy its a Palace
and you are the King
Bloody great stuff….
billyboy replied
Hey TG, way cool of you to stop by!
Yes, this place is awesome even if your not a musician… just packed full of new and vintage vibe. I was glad I had the right lens to get this angle, and I’ll be using it to get other parts of the complex… so keep an eye out for more…
You play guitar??
ToastedGhost
I used to play the synth… remember the good old 80’s… Gary Numan… The human league… Kraftwerk…
billyboy replied
How could I forget Autobahn??
We’ve got a pretty cool selection of 80’s synths… Prophet 5, Oberheim, Kurtzweil, Polymoog (that thing rocks if you can keep it alive!), a nice D-series Mini Moog, Memory Moog… even got an Emulator II… Forget the ‘used to’... it’s like riding a bike. Drop us an email and book yer next solo album!!
ToastedGhost
Ah I had a Mini Moog sold it like a fool for a Roland JV80
You know in 1980 I one a travelling scholarship to the BBC’s Visual Effects Dept and Radiophonics workshop… Pre-midi in those days the mixing desks were like battleships
billyboy replied
Midi? What a waste of time THAT was!!
ToastedGhost
Maybe but the fun thing was each note had a wire going out so it looked like spaghetti junction
billyboy replied
Too true! Can’t tell you how many pens and lighters we lost that way!
Amanda McLennan
True Billy – I am very lucky to be able to do my job, I have had a few Europeans (well Poms anyway) who have come out with me before – they find it hard to believe we can drive for 6 hours and move only an inch on a map! Thanks for looking at my work too, I appreciate it.
terezadelpilar
Bill great depth and perspective. Nice work you have…music..:))
billyboy replied
Hey Tereza, so cool of you to drop by… glad you dig the vibe!!
The depth and perspective is from my 16-35mm lens (at 16mm) which I now practically never remove from my camera. Best fun I`ve had in years!
Paul Vanzella
what an amazing image.. the guitarist in the surf band i’m in – would kill to even get close to this… wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
billyboy replied
Cheers Paul! Tell him we`ve got an amazing original Ventures model Mosrite… awesome surf tone. It`s especially the young bands just starting out with their first album that really freak out in this place… so much inspiration and vibe at their fingertips that they can record with free of charge. And when the artists are inspired, the records sell so everyone`s happy!
Thanks for stopping by!
Paul Vanzella
wow – that’s incredible Billy – I’ll tell him… they are the quintessential surf guitar…. very inspiring mate!
Hans Kawitzki
Wow,now thats impressive and very serious
billyboy replied
Thanks Hans for being impressed.
And it`s really more FUN than it is serious. Unless you`re a serious musician. But from our experience there`s not too many of those around so we make it fun and it works!
karenuk1969
What a fun shot & plenty of interest to see.
billyboy replied
Cheers Karen for passing by and digging the fun…
Cool to be on your watchlist!!!
Cathleen Taraw...
Boo! Get out of the back room ;) How cool is your job.
billyboy replied
OK, after you…
Paul Starkey
What an Aladdins Cave of treasures…just magic.
Travis Easton
Man you are truly one of the worlds premier gear freaks. I can’t imagine how much all that is worth, gobsmacking.
billyboy replied
At face value, I guess it`s already worth a fair bit… but as an asset to attract our customers, it`s worth more than its weight in gold!
Travis Easton
A justified gear freak, a very dangerous animal indeed. I’d certainly be attracted to a studio with this lot (if I could afford it, still paying off my last album…)
billyboy replied
Our prices are so way competitive… lots of people don`t even ask cause they think we`re expensive. We can always do a deal!!
Sam Dantone
I’m not a musician, but this makes me crap my pants…
This is Heaven!

billyboy replied
Sam, gotta tell ya that’s the coolest seal of approval I’ve EVA had!
Cheers for the fav too!!
Owen Jones
Whoa!!! What a place!!!!!
billyboy replied
Thanks mate!
You in the UK? We did White Lies’ album here some months ago and it’s selling amazing… could do with a couple more acts like that!
And thanks for faving !
KcranmerArt
If that’s your office than I am SERIOUSLY ENVIOUS, LOL!!! I couldn’t play an instrument if my life depended on it…well maybe Mary Had a Little Lamb by Violin, hehe…but I can definately see my gallery~photo studio in a room like this. DYNAMITE SHOT Billy…almost looks like a mirrored reflection, haha!!!
billyboy replied
So… how many hairs did YOU count??
Thanks for dropping by and leaving your sweet scent in my office!!
And if you ever get the urge to RECORD Mary Had a Little lamb, you now know where to go!
xo
mfortune
Beautiful shot! Looks like you have a dream job!
humanremains
I agree with mfortune… it’s heaven! You don’t sell cameras too, do you? :D
billyboy replied
Nope, not yet… but it`s a cool idea that we may very well have a think about!
Thanks for the fav!!
Scott d'Almeida
excellent
billyboy replied
Cheers Scott, and many thanx for the fav!!
