Big Apple

Taken from top of the Empire State Building, NYC, 10:00 PM.
It was so windy up there I had to jam my lightweight tripod against the wall with my knee to keep everything still.

Originally shot on Fuji 100 ISO color print film (see insert below), scanned to digital on a Canon FS2710 negative scanner, then converted to BW.

WOW…that’s beautiful..you really captured how busy it is that’s for sure!!!

    Nicely Done =]

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Thanks Belinda and Madison. It does look a bit Gotham… the city that never sleeps—at 10 PM it doesn`t look like it`s even thinking of going to bed!

This one needs to be seen at the larger view!

Gershwin – Raphsody in Blue – Woody Allen, or Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster – Sweet Smell of Success – so many films about New York… Beautiful image.

  • mick8585

    mick8585

It says one word to me ’ Metropolis ’. It says New York to me. Great shot.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Thanks guys. The original is in color, but this version does the Gershwin thing for me and that makes it nostalgic—yeah, Allen, Curtis, Langcaster… jeeze, NYC is an awesome place. Very little comes close.

  • Kitsmumma

    Kitsmumma

So good in b&w! Love it.

  • Eleni Sofroniou

    Eleni Sofroniou

wow! I love this. The contrast is great.

  • Flamejob

    Flamejob

This reminds me of “Bladerunner”. I like the steady glow in the centre of the image, its where my eye goes first, looking for detail and my word there is plenty of it here.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Thanks Kitsmumma, eleni and Flamejob. Bladerunner was a wicked film and that you make the association is way cool. I was even surprised by the detail considering how hard it was to keep the camera still with all that wind for such a long exposure. Luck and perserverence—6 other shots came out unsharp.

  • barb

    barb

this works so well as a black and white. The lit area is nicely nestled into the darker sections, very nicely taken!

    Thanks Barb. Your stuff rocks!

  • Kieran Argall

    Kieran Argall

BB – what an awesome photo!!! I love how the bright lights in hte foreground really expose those sections against a dark background…

And mate I’d jump at a chance to photograph a wedding. Well what do you know…I’ve got another one this weekend (not OFFICIAL photographer)...great experience though.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Many thanks for the comment Kieran. If you’re planning on being in Brussels on 25 Jan, give me a ring!

  • Jonathan Russell

    Jonathan Russell

excellent take on what is potentially the most cliched shot in New York :P
You almost feel the light glow emanating from Midtown.
Must be a fairly old shot, hey? No Bank of America Tower, and the Verizon building still has its old cladding.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Many thanks jgrus. I was actually hoping to avoid the cliché by not including the Chrysler building! And yes, this was a number of years ago—I hadn`t even realized the BOAT was in this view… and the Verizon has a new facade?? Makes me realize how long I`ve been away!

  • Rich Gale

    Rich Gale

this is super there is no sine of camera shake from the wind so you did a good holding it still!!!!, great image well done.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Sheer determination Rich… there was no way I was gonna blow an opportunity like that with a bunch of blurred shots. In the end, this was the only one out of 7 that wasn’t; Thanks for liking!

  • Halcyon007

    Halcyon007

This is a cityscape metropolis at its finest. The richest of blacks and shiniest of whites combine in what Gotham City would revel in its darkest hours. The pinpoint accuracy of the detail on the individual skyscrapers is just awe inspiring at this low light with the pockets of light shooting up give a sense of activity and fun being had below.
Finally the inactivity of the buildings in the foreground make for a great border around the active skyscrapers.

this shot. Yes…I like this. :) heheh..It’d look good framed and in any office (except
for my dentist who is too cheap to give me a script of pain pills and this time I really
need them!!) or any upper class hotel or apartment. Fine work. ;)

I have commented in a previous account, but this is worthy of another comment with my avatar next to it. This is just breathtakingly stunning. The clarity between bright white and jet black is perfect, a real black and white with no grey inbetween. This just oozes with life.

  • billyboy replied

Stuart, I really hope you DID see some grey in this… otherwise we may both have some calibration problems?

Regardless, your comment made my day. And what a treat to get more than just a one liner from someone. Think I`ll go check out what`s new in yer pf… haven`t heard from you in a while so thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to look under the bonnet!

  • billyboy replied

Thanks so much Susi! I can only say my reason for not seeing you was that when this was taken I didn’t know you… and next time you buy a camera you gotta make sure it’s not homophobic!!

Wow, that’s a cool present. Next time if someone squeezes you from getting a shot, just shove whoever it was over the edge… could get you the shot of a lifetime if you’re quick enough!

Thanks for the respect, and for the fav. You are a total gem!!

  • Sharon Perrett

    Sharon Perrett

Wow fantastic shot, love the use of b&w, I am quite happy to sit and stare at this image, as I don’t think I could manage that height myself, what a breathtaking view and it’s not windy from here either :)

  • Sharon Perrett

    Sharon Perrett

I just had to come back something was niggling at me…..... so I scanned the comments and that’s what I was trying to think of Bladerunner love that film, it could have been a still from it. That’s why it seemed familiar have watched the film many times

  • billyboy replied

Sharon, I so share your love of Bladerunner… changed the vibe of sci-fi forever. So cool you made that association!!

  • LindaR

    LindaR

I am a New Yorker from birth ~ but rarely have I seen such a view of the city ~ this goes and glows beyond any “as is” perspective ~ there is that “Gotham” feel inside as others have pointed to ~ but there is also a certain kind of timeless perspective here too ~ a bit of Frank Sinatra could be still be walking these streets ~ 1950’s ~ and to the present. I think I’m seeing it through your glass and the eyes of anyone who could love it and appreciate it ~ whether a naive or tourist ~ your shining it’s best face ~ bravo Billy xxx

  • billyboy replied

Hey Linda, haven’t heard from you in so long… thanks for making my day with such an amazing take and for the fav!

I avoided the classic view with the Chrysler building, and maybe that’s why you feel this goes beyond the stereotype and focuses more on the vibe. Being up there in the wind on such a clear night was a breathtaking experience I will never forget.

I’m so glad you found this and that it had an impact on you. And I SO hope you’re not a Mets fan!

  • LindaR

    LindaR

Yes, I’m glad you avoided the classic view ~ that IS it ~ it’s just the City ~ I love that you said that ~ went “click” for me :) No worries ~ not a Mets fan either lol ~ not into sports really ~ rather good music or the movies or a good book ~ so does that mean it’s safe for me to still visit your heavenly “sanctuary”? :) xx

  • billyboy replied

I would be totally honored for you to visit my sanctuary… lots going on there for the mo… Don`t know if you ever noticed, but about half-way down the comments, the place got trashed by a Mets fan… I didn`t bother cleaning it up as it kind of gives the place a bit of history. Not quite like Gerschwin gave to the Apple… but you know what I mean. Please come and visit… give the place a bit of NYC class!
    xx back atcha!

  • LindaR

    LindaR

thanks Billy ~ I’d be honored to hang out ~ have a drink, some Belgium chocs, have great conversation ~ we’d be “sitting on” that easy button it would be so sublime a time :) cheers my friend xx

I don’t think “stunning” even begins to come close. This is an amazing shot!!!

For me B&W and colour both work tremendously for different reasons. Easily the best monochrome I have seen in a long while…reminiscent of the masters…..the colour version too, really brings to life the light glow…..

    A straight up favourite….amazaing work!!

Wow BLADERUNNER!! Aside from Matrix.. this is my all time fav movie.. Time to Die…Exceptional.. the beams of light espically from th building in the middle rocks..!

  • billyboy replied

Thanks Lina! You might have seen the original color shot further up… that turned out OK, but the dynamic and energy in the scene didn`t really kick in till I converted it to BW. Didn`t need much tweaking, just one of those shots, like your Scattered, that happened at the right time under the right conditions. You can contrive anything you want, but it`s THOSE shots that make the magic.

Looks superb in B&W. Lightweight tripod? How d’you sneek that up? Mine got confiscated by the goons at the bottom…

  • billyboy replied

    Thanks John!
This was years ago… before 9/11. Since then NYC has become a police state.
Didn’t even have to sneak it up there as most of the others I was with had much bigger and heavier ones. I hadn’t been back to the Apple for 20 years, and the magic surrounding this particular visit I’m sure contributed to this shot being as dynamic as it is.

Funny thing though… they wouldn’t let me set the tripod up in the ground floor lobby, though I did get off one or two shots of the granite walled elevator corridor before they got heavy. The shot I unfortunately missed was the guy in the King Kong suit running around harassing the tourists. Amazing vibe…
    Thanks for the interest mate!!

Your knee may be damn sore but WOW your efforts have paid off tremendously! This is incredible work.. And in B&W that must have taken you a lot of debating.. Absolutely brilliant and jaw dropping photography! Well done Billy! :0)

  • billyboy replied

    Hey Katzie!
Thanks for taking the time to give this more than a one-liner…
If you look at the color version further up in the comments, you’ll see why I settled on the BW. The color shot was interesting, but in BW, the scope and enormity of the view just opened up. Funny how that works. I love NYC so much… don’t even think it’s possible to take a bad shot from up there. Just make sure the camera’s still and let the program mode do its thing… it’s well worth sacrificing a knee or two…

I still have a hankering for film, although I haven’t shot a roll in years. I’d have to say that this shot of NY is the best I have seen anywhere, bar none.
I too agree with earlier posters about the Gotham look, it’s very strong in fact.
    Breath taking in b/w.

  • billyboy replied

Peter, a comment like this goes a long way to making me think you’re a saint. St. Peter. And I have to say that you only really get the enormity of this view till you’ve seen it blown up to proper size. I never flaunt my stuff, but have to admit it’s hanging in our living room above the sofa and it looks pretty wicked.

Thanks so much for that… I know lots seem to dig this, but to say it’s the best you’ve seen bar none is very cool.

I’ve lost the hankering for film… digital is so easy, and I find the quality with a full frame sensor gets very close to the vibe I used to feel with film. Except for infra red. There is no digital comparison to the flukey way that stuff used to focus and expose. Alas, I don’t even know if there’s anyone still around who can process it… even if you could find a reel still kciking around that isn’t well out of date.
Oh well, we got memories… and digital scans…
Thanks again mate. Made my day!

Blown away by this absolutely stunning image, no wonder it’s so popular, and I’m just glad I wasn’t up there the night you took this BB, or I think I’d have needed to have Tinkerbell skills to get out of your way, such determination when so many others have tried and failed…........It so paid off…...
I’m also reminded of Sleepless in Seattle, did you find the teddy bear?
    xox
    ;)

  • billyboy replied

Found the teddy bear… sent the postcard… got the portrait… all the rest is yet to come… and yes, it SO did pay off!!

Tracey, I love that you’re attracted to the dynamic in this. The energy and the vibration felt from taking in that view is something that became part of me on that night and it never went away after so many years. It’s something that needs to be shared, so thanks for finding this and saving it in your favs so you’ll feel it each time you log on.

This is amazing, truly amazing. It has to be one of, if not the best cityscape I’ve ever seen. Not just of NY, but anywhere. The tones are wonderful and the feeling of vastness it eminates is awesome.

Jamie. It’s comments like yours that make me think jeeze, it can’t get much better than this… and then you fave it!

Christine, this is so amazing… not only cause it’s cool about the feature (especially as it’s already been featured in this group!), but because it’s a wicked banner and I got TWO of ‘em and I don’t even care if it’s a mistake cause I’m greedy and I am SO not gonna give one back!!!

So thank you very much for hosting such a fine group and for totally feeding my ego!

A wonderful picture and you did great with the B&W conversion. Michael

  • billyboy replied 25 days ago

    Thanks Michael.
In fact, I only desaturated the image once I’d scanned the neg and processed it in PS in color. Nothing more sophisticated than pulling the slider. Well, actually I worked lots of different areas with contrast and level adjustments before I considered it finished… it’s a fine line between doing just enough and overdoing it. It’s encouagement like yours that makes me think I got it right in the end.
