Big Apple
Taken from top of the Empire State Building, NYC, 10:00 PM.
It was so windy up there I had to jam my lightweight tripod against the wall with my knee to keep everything still.
Originally shot on Fuji 100 ISO color print film (see insert below), scanned to digital on a Canon FS2710 negative scanner, then converted to BW.

Belinda Leopold
Fantastic in B&W!!! Very Gotham city….
Madison Ellis
WOW…that’s beautiful..you really captured how busy it is that’s for sure!!!
Nicely Done =]
billyboy
Thanks Belinda and Madison. It does look a bit Gotham… the city that never sleeps—at 10 PM it doesn`t look like it`s even thinking of going to bed!
This one needs to be seen at the larger view!
Steve Roe
great shot b/w impression!
Paul Vanzella
Stunning work – love it!
Jeff Burns
Absolutely fabulous shot. WOW Amazing lighting
billyboy
Thanks Steve, Paul and Jeff for commenting.
Jeff, I saw your IR shots in your gallery… are they from film? I’ll post one or two of mine later if you want to stop by…
Cheers, Bill
oisin
Gershwin – Raphsody in Blue – Woody Allen, or Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster – Sweet Smell of Success – so many films about New York… Beautiful image.
mick8585
It says one word to me ’ Metropolis ’. It says New York to me. Great shot.
billyboy
Thanks guys. The original is in color, but this version does the Gershwin thing for me and that makes it nostalgic—yeah, Allen, Curtis, Langcaster… jeeze, NYC is an awesome place. Very little comes close.
Kitsmumma
So good in b&w! Love it.
Eleni Sofroniou
wow! I love this. The contrast is great.
Flamejob
This reminds me of “Bladerunner”. I like the steady glow in the centre of the image, its where my eye goes first, looking for detail and my word there is plenty of it here.
billyboy
Thanks Kitsmumma, eleni and Flamejob. Bladerunner was a wicked film and that you make the association is way cool. I was even surprised by the detail considering how hard it was to keep the camera still with all that wind for such a long exposure. Luck and perserverence—6 other shots came out unsharp.
barb
this works so well as a black and white. The lit area is nicely nestled into the darker sections, very nicely taken!
Thank you for your very kind comments by the way.
billyboy
Thanks Barb. Your stuff rocks!
Kieran Argall
BB – what an awesome photo!!! I love how the bright lights in hte foreground really expose those sections against a dark background…
And mate I’d jump at a chance to photograph a wedding. Well what do you know…I’ve got another one this weekend (not OFFICIAL photographer)...great experience though.
billyboy
Many thanks for the comment Kieran. If you’re planning on being in Brussels on 25 Jan, give me a ring!
Jonathan Russell
excellent take on what is potentially the most cliched shot in New York :P
You almost feel the light glow emanating from Midtown.
Must be a fairly old shot, hey? No Bank of America Tower, and the Verizon building still has its old cladding.
billyboy
Many thanks jgrus. I was actually hoping to avoid the cliché by not including the Chrysler building! And yes, this was a number of years ago—I hadn`t even realized the BOAT was in this view… and the Verizon has a new facade?? Makes me realize how long I`ve been away!
Rich Gale
this is super there is no sine of camera shake from the wind so you did a good holding it still!!!!, great image well done.
billyboy
Sheer determination Rich… there was no way I was gonna blow an opportunity like that with a bunch of blurred shots. In the end, this was the only one out of 7 that wasn’t; Thanks for liking!
AvrilLynn
Nice B/W of a city! A very challenging city at that! Beautiful photo!

Wonderful image that captures the feel of NY. I was there last month – please check out my photo of Ground Zero in the snow – it was an amazing and chilling view.
Greg German
Congratulations on being “Featured” today (12/20/07), BB. A little Pre-Christmas gift, eh? I haven’t been up to the top of the Empire State in 45 years and that time was during the day. This shot makes me think the night view is far better. Good job!
billyboy
Thanks to everyone for whom this picture has made an impression. I’m amazed at how many people from all over the world feel nostalgia towards this awesome city.
Greg, thanks for the congrats, and Marion, I’ve been to your gallery and yes, that is a chilling shot and it’s not cause of the weather.

had to come back to this shot again…. I spent Christmas and New Year in New York with my family this year and fell in love with the city all over again, along with this amazing photo of yours! looking at it for a second time…. wow…. totally majestic and amazing… I think the director of Mary J Blige’s Be Without You video owes you a big check…. or is it the other way around? :)
billyboy
Thanks for the awesome comment and the link Daniel… I han`t seen that one from MJ so the views pretty much blew me away. Wish she DID owe me a big check!
Holly Werner
Nicely done.
mdesiree
As others have said, “Bladerunner” was my first thought upon seeing this. :) Not only the quality of the light—the pinpoints of light and the seemingly endless city—but also the angle, and the way some buildings are silhouetted. Really a beautiful shot.
mare
Fantastic shot, works well in B&W. Very tough
pwinslow

Billyboy…!!!
Absolutely MAGICAL…!!!
Halcyon007
This is a cityscape metropolis at its finest. The richest of blacks and shiniest of whites combine in what Gotham City would revel in its darkest hours. The pinpoint accuracy of the detail on the individual skyscrapers is just awe inspiring at this low light with the pockets of light shooting up give a sense of activity and fun being had below.
Finally the inactivity of the buildings in the foreground make for a great border around the active skyscrapers.
billyboy
Thanks guys, and I don`t have a problem with blushing now and again.
Stuart, you are one totally mad dude. Thanks for one of the nicest comments I`ve ever received!
Jacky
Fantastic view,lighting and atmosphere..!!:)

Fantastic photo. Great in b/w

The view from up there is certainly better then the view from the bottom. If you can get a view from the bottom without being trampled. ;)

Birgitta
Possibly the classiest B&W cityscape I’ve ever seen. Serious photography...
I happen to have a migraine, just had 3 teeth drilled at the dentist’s office (and
feel like I could pass out from the pain as I type) and here I sit, commenting on
this shot. Yes…I like this. :) heheh..It’d look good framed and in any office (except
for my dentist who is too cheap to give me a script of pain pills and this time I really
need them!!) or any upper class hotel or apartment. Fine work. ;)
billyboy replied
What’s his address? If I can inject enough morphine into him he might forget how cheap he is and just buy the damn, thing!!
Thanks, Birgitta, for the seriously cool comment, the fav, and most of all, for the smile!
Maxhamish
Stunning image…...really nice…...........
AlexMac
brilliant capture, I couldnt imagine it in colour, the B/W is perfect
billyboy replied
Thanks for your input and compliment Alex… and now, just for you… here’s a unique peek at the full color version. And I agree, along with Gerschwin, Batman and Harrison Ford… the BW is where it’s at.
AlexMac
WOW thankyou for showing me the colour version, and even tho the colours are sooo pretty, the black and white just do it for me, love the old world gothic feel, It must be so amazing to be able to see sights like this :0)

sweetscent62
Wow… this is freakin awesome : ) !! Wen x
Natalie Broome
fantastic capture!
Stuart Chapman
I have commented in a previous account, but this is worthy of another comment with my avatar next to it. This is just breathtakingly stunning. The clarity between bright white and jet black is perfect, a real black and white with no grey inbetween. This just oozes with life.
billyboy replied
Stuart, I really hope you DID see some grey in this… otherwise we may both have some calibration problems?
Regardless, your comment made my day. And what a treat to get more than just a one liner from someone. Think I`ll go check out what`s new in yer pf… haven`t heard from you in a while so thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to look under the bonnet!
billyboy replied
ps: Cheers for the fav mate!
susi lawson
You came to this country and didn’t come see me!! :) Love both versions of this! I went to NYC in 86 during the bicentennial and my camera froze up during the gay parade, but have a lot of interesting shots from that trip! anyway, LOVE this !
billyboy replied
Thanks so much Susi! I can only say my reason for not seeing you was that when this was taken I didn’t know you… and next time you buy a camera you gotta make sure it’s not homophobic!!
This picture is what prompted me to do a BW calendar this year, and I’m wondering when you will do yours? If there isn’t a Susi calendar, the world will no longer make any sense. XO!
susi lawson
HA!! Thanks Billy! I will have to look into the Calendar idea! you sweetie you!
Erhan OZBIYIK
WOW !!!
Neil MacPhail
that looks great! It reminds me of Sin City…. I love the beams of light from the buildings. It can be hard to capture this kind of image, especally in those conditions! GREAT JOB! looks fantastic in B&W
C J Hummel - ...
Wow I love both versions they are fantastic, you should show the colour version on RB too.
Nikki Collier
Gorgeous!!!!!!! amazing image..
Xenia
I WAS JUST OVER THERE ON SEPTEMBER 20TH, MY MOTHER HAD A BIRTHDAY AND TO GO UP EMPIRE STATE BUILDING WAS ONE OF THE PRESENTS. I AM AMAZED THAT YOU TOOK SUCH A WONDERFUL SHOT, CAUSE I TRIED AND WAS VERY MUCH SQUEEZED FROM ANY SIDE, HEHE. SO I HAD TO GIVE IT UP. BUT ALL MY RESPECT GOES TO YOU. WONDERFUL WORK.
billyboy replied
Wow, that’s a cool present. Next time if someone squeezes you from getting a shot, just shove whoever it was over the edge… could get you the shot of a lifetime if you’re quick enough!
Thanks for the respect, and for the fav. You are a total gem!!
JohnThunderbird
do you have to pay to go up there?
billyboy replied
John, I don’t think you do… but even if you did, the view would pay ytou back with interest!
Thanks for the fav!!
JohnThunderbird
never been to NY, but would only like to see the size of it. shame about the 11 changing all that
SharonAHenson
Great shot !
Sharon Perrett
Wow fantastic shot, love the use of b&w, I am quite happy to sit and stare at this image, as I don’t think I could manage that height myself, what a breathtaking view and it’s not windy from here either :)
Sharon Perrett
I just had to come back something was niggling at me…..... so I scanned the comments and that’s what I was trying to think of Bladerunner love that film, it could have been a still from it. That’s why it seemed familiar have watched the film many times
billyboy replied
Sharon, I so share your love of Bladerunner… changed the vibe of sci-fi forever. So cool you made that association!!
LindaR
I am a New Yorker from birth ~ but rarely have I seen such a view of the city ~ this goes and glows beyond any “as is” perspective ~ there is that “Gotham” feel inside as others have pointed to ~ but there is also a certain kind of timeless perspective here too ~ a bit of Frank Sinatra could be still be walking these streets ~ 1950’s ~ and to the present. I think I’m seeing it through your glass and the eyes of anyone who could love it and appreciate it ~ whether a naive or tourist ~ your shining it’s best face ~ bravo Billy xxx
billyboy replied
Hey Linda, haven’t heard from you in so long… thanks for making my day with such an amazing take and for the fav!
I avoided the classic view with the Chrysler building, and maybe that’s why you feel this goes beyond the stereotype and focuses more on the vibe. Being up there in the wind on such a clear night was a breathtaking experience I will never forget.
I’m so glad you found this and that it had an impact on you. And I SO hope you’re not a Mets fan!
LindaR
Yes, I’m glad you avoided the classic view ~ that IS it ~ it’s just the City ~ I love that you said that ~ went “click” for me :) No worries ~ not a Mets fan either lol ~ not into sports really ~ rather good music or the movies or a good book ~ so does that mean it’s safe for me to still visit your heavenly “sanctuary”? :) xx
billyboy replied
I would be totally honored for you to visit my sanctuary… lots going on there for the mo… Don`t know if you ever noticed, but about half-way down the comments, the place got trashed by a Mets fan… I didn`t bother cleaning it up as it kind of gives the place a bit of history. Not quite like Gerschwin gave to the Apple… but you know what I mean. Please come and visit… give the place a bit of NYC class!
xx back atcha!
LindaR
thanks Billy ~ I’d be honored to hang out ~ have a drink, some Belgium chocs, have great conversation ~ we’d be “sitting on” that easy button it would be so sublime a time :) cheers my friend xx
SilverVisionz
Still and absolute favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!
billyboy replied
Hey Silva! You don’t have much stuff in yer fav’s yet so I am totally honored.
Btw, I was a buck in my former life, so I totally dig your avatar.
elisab
This is a fantastic shot. Looks like a magic camera took this shot.
billyboy replied
Thanks Elisa, that’s a massive comment… and cheers for the fav!!

MichaelA

brilliant image
Teeze
Wow – amazing shot. Looks like its glowing…magical..
billyboy replied
Thanks Teeze, and for the fav on this!
Yeah, that glow… heard today they were thinking of cutting back on lighting places like Times Square at night. I’m all for conservation, especially under our current economical situation… but some things just aren’t to be messed with. The show must go on!
Kevin Skinner
Fantastic result and an excellent B&W. Simply superb.

Cheers for the fav on this and for your comments on my other stuff!
Mark Moskvitch
I don’t think “stunning” even begins to come close. This is an amazing shot!!!
For me B&W and colour both work tremendously for different reasons. Easily the best monochrome I have seen in a long while…reminiscent of the masters…..the colour version too, really brings to life the light glow…..
A straight up favourite….amazaing work!!
billyboy replied
Mark, that`s an awesome comment and because of it, and the fact that you faved this as well means that you will ultimately go to heaven.
Will check out your pf later tonite when I`ve got more time…

billyboy replied
Yasmina, cheers for the comment and for the fav!
It’s an unforgettable view… nobody should go through life without seeing it at least once. Glad ya made it!!
linaji
Wow BLADERUNNER!! Aside from Matrix.. this is my all time fav movie.. Time to Die…Exceptional.. the beams of light espically from th building in the middle rocks..!
billyboy replied
Thanks Lina! You might have seen the original color shot further up… that turned out OK, but the dynamic and energy in the scene didn`t really kick in till I converted it to BW. Didn`t need much tweaking, just one of those shots, like your Scattered, that happened at the right time under the right conditions. You can contrive anything you want, but it`s THOSE shots that make the magic.
Thank you so much for faving this!!!
C J Lewis
Fantastic B&W billyboy…terrific contrasts & tones :)
billyboy replied
Hey Chris, thanks for stopping by and faving this!!
Like I`ve said, this came alive when I did the BW conversion from the color. Originally shot on color negative film!
XO
C J Lewis
Did a fab job on conversion…at first thought it was a b&w shot :))
Abhishek Scariya
One of the most interesting cityscape images i’ve seen…

She should know just how amazing that view is at night…

billyboy replied
Thanks for that Karen!
The view has changed since this pic… do you get there often?
xo
AJM Photography
Looks superb in B&W. Lightweight tripod? How d’you sneek that up? Mine got confiscated by the goons at the bottom…
billyboy replied
Thanks John!
This was years ago… before 9/11. Since then NYC has become a police state.
Didn’t even have to sneak it up there as most of the others I was with had much bigger and heavier ones. I hadn’t been back to the Apple for 20 years, and the magic surrounding this particular visit I’m sure contributed to this shot being as dynamic as it is.
Funny thing though… they wouldn’t let me set the tripod up in the ground floor lobby, though I did get off one or two shots of the granite walled elevator corridor before they got heavy. The shot I unfortunately missed was the guy in the King Kong suit running around harassing the tourists. Amazing vibe…
Thanks for the interest mate!!
Karen Moore
I was there the year after 9/11 been back twice since. There is just so much to see in NYC. Loved it and hope to get back soon.
Susan Kimball
Wonderful image and Iove it in b&w. Thanks so much for submitting it to the All About NY State Group!
billyboy replied
Thank YOU Susan for hosting such a cool group… surprised there’s not more stuff on NY here.
Is there anything on earth more MASSIVE than the Apple??
xo!
Scott d'Almeida
wonderful indeed cheers
billyboy replied
Thanks Scott…
Just noticed that you faved this though it didn’t show up on my activity monitor… probably cause you already faved it!
PLEASE don’t take it back… getting something faved twice is a rare occurance. Like finding a $10 bill on the sidewalk. It’ll be my lucky charm…
Cheers mate!
mm1208
great shot,
love the shiny, gloomy lights..
billyboy replied
Thanx mm… love the shiny, cool comment!!
StarKatz
Your knee may be damn sore but WOW your efforts have paid off tremendously! This is incredible work.. And in B&W that must have taken you a lot of debating.. Absolutely brilliant and jaw dropping photography! Well done Billy! :0)
billyboy replied
Hey Katzie!
Thanks for taking the time to give this more than a one-liner…
If you look at the color version further up in the comments, you’ll see why I settled on the BW. The color shot was interesting, but in BW, the scope and enormity of the view just opened up. Funny how that works. I love NYC so much… don’t even think it’s possible to take a bad shot from up there. Just make sure the camera’s still and let the program mode do its thing… it’s well worth sacrificing a knee or two…
xo
Nigdaw
Love this shot and you’re right about the B/W it’s really clean and gives a real impact.
billyboy replied
Cheers Nigel for feeling the impact!
Sharon Mau
It is a brilliant image and so beautiful in monochrome.
Aloha, congratulations on your feature today in Americas ~ Rural, Urban, Wild, Free
24 July 2009
billyboy replied
Thanks again for this Sharon… happy to see it`s still on the feature page, and so glad you appreciate the vibe in BW.
Aloha right back atcha!!

Peter Marin
I still have a hankering for film, although I haven’t shot a roll in years. I’d have to say that this shot of NY is the best I have seen anywhere, bar none.
I too agree with earlier posters about the Gotham look, it’s very strong in fact.
Breath taking in b/w.
billyboy replied
Peter, a comment like this goes a long way to making me think you’re a saint. St. Peter. And I have to say that you only really get the enormity of this view till you’ve seen it blown up to proper size. I never flaunt my stuff, but have to admit it’s hanging in our living room above the sofa and it looks pretty wicked.
Thanks so much for that… I know lots seem to dig this, but to say it’s the best you’ve seen bar none is very cool.
I’ve lost the hankering for film… digital is so easy, and I find the quality with a full frame sensor gets very close to the vibe I used to feel with film. Except for infra red. There is no digital comparison to the flukey way that stuff used to focus and expose. Alas, I don’t even know if there’s anyone still around who can process it… even if you could find a reel still kciking around that isn’t well out of date.
Oh well, we got memories… and digital scans…
Thanks again mate. Made my day!
billyboy replied
Jeeze, after all that I forgot to thank you for the fav!!
GomesPereira
Fantastic photo Billy. This is ART, real ART….and a image that the Mayor of NY should have in Town Hall. Beautiful…. GP
billyboy replied
Wow. You think I should write him or something?
That’s an amazing thing for you to say Gomes. Compliments like that are few and far between, so thanks St. Gomes!!!
Tracey Mac
Blown away by this absolutely stunning image, no wonder it’s so popular, and I’m just glad I wasn’t up there the night you took this BB, or I think I’d have needed to have Tinkerbell skills to get out of your way, such determination when so many others have tried and failed…........It so paid off…...
I’m also reminded of Sleepless in Seattle, did you find the teddy bear?
xox
;)
billyboy replied
Found the teddy bear… sent the postcard… got the portrait… all the rest is yet to come… and yes, it SO did pay off!!
Tracey, I love that you’re attracted to the dynamic in this. The energy and the vibration felt from taking in that view is something that became part of me on that night and it never went away after so many years. It’s something that needs to be shared, so thanks for finding this and saving it in your favs so you’ll feel it each time you log on.
xox
lianne
What a very dramatic black and white of a city that never sleeps! Just so extraordinary – crisp, magical – very beautiful indeed.
billyboy replied
Thanks so much Lianne!
There are other cities that never sleep.. but none of them quite as gorgeously sleepless as the Big Apple.
Makes my day that you feel the magic in this!!
xo
Jewd
A brilliant shot…you’ve captured all the glittering magic of this city, it looks like a big jewel..
billyboy replied
Wow Jewd… considering you’ve been on RB as long as me, you don’t have all that many pics in your favs… and even fewer names in your watchlist. And looking at the quality of your own work, believe me when I say I’m honored.
So cheers for the fav, and for seeing the magic in this.
Big jewel? You kind of sparkle a bit yerself!
xo
Jewd
Yes I have to cull my favs because I get out of control with it…I guess I am selective, that’s a good point..and with the watchlist I have to be also because otherwise if I’m not for a few days then you have pages and pages of stuff to go through as people add their work and I like to really keep track of my favs work..so its good you noticed that your work is truly appreciated by me….peace x
billyboy replied
Thanks for that Jewd…
and peace x right back atcha!!

This is amazing, truly amazing. It has to be one of, if not the best cityscape I’ve ever seen. Not just of NY, but anywhere. The tones are wonderful and the feeling of vastness it eminates is awesome.
billyboy replied
Jamie. It’s comments like yours that make me think jeeze, it can’t get much better than this… and then you fave it!
Cheers St. James!!
Dan Biggins

Christine, this is so amazing… not only cause it’s cool about the feature (especially as it’s already been featured in this group!), but because it’s a wicked banner and I got TWO of ‘em and I don’t even care if it’s a mistake cause I’m greedy and I am SO not gonna give one back!!!
So thank you very much for hosting such a fine group and for totally feeding my ego!

Michael Degenh... 25 days ago
A wonderful picture and you did great with the B&W conversion. Michael
billyboy replied 25 days ago
Thanks Michael.
In fact, I only desaturated the image once I’d scanned the neg and processed it in PS in color. Nothing more sophisticated than pulling the slider. Well, actually I worked lots of different areas with contrast and level adjustments before I considered it finished… it’s a fine line between doing just enough and overdoing it. It’s encouagement like yours that makes me think I got it right in the end.
Sharon Mau 16 days ago
