Big Apple
Taken from top of the Empire State Building, NYC, 10:00 PM.
It was so windy up there I had to jam my lightweight tripod against the wall with my knee to keep everything still.
Big Apple belongs to the following groups:
Black and White Photography, Cityscapes and Skylines, New York City, Night Photography and The Urban EnvironmentAvailable for sale as Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

Fantastic in B&W!!! Very Gotham city….
Madison Ellis, 11 months ago
WOW…that’s beautiful..you really captured how busy it is that’s for sure!!!
Nicely Done =]
billyboy, 11 months ago
Thanks Belinda and Madison. It does look a bit Gotham… the city that never sleeps—at 10 PM it doesn`t look like it`s even thinking of going to bed!
This one needs to be seen at the larger view!

Gershwin – Raphsody in Blue – Woody Allen, or Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster – Sweet Smell of Success – so many films about New York… Beautiful image.
mick8585, 11 months ago
It says one word to me ’ Metropolis ’. It says New York to me. Great shot.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Thanks guys. The original is in color, but this version does the Gershwin thing for me and that makes it nostalgic—yeah, Allen, Curtis, Langcaster… jeeze, NYC is an awesome place. Very little comes close.
Kitsmumma, 11 months ago
So good in b&w! Love it.
Eleni Sofroniou, 11 months ago
wow! I love this. The contrast is great.
Flamejob, 11 months ago
This reminds me of “Bladerunner”. I like the steady glow in the centre of the image, its where my eye goes first, looking for detail and my word there is plenty of it here.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Thanks Kitsmumma, eleni and Flamejob. Bladerunner was a wicked film and that you make the association is way cool. I was even surprised by the detail considering how hard it was to keep the camera still with all that wind for such a long exposure. Luck and perserverence—6 other shots came out unsharp.
barb, 11 months ago
this works so well as a black and white. The lit area is nicely nestled into the darker sections, very nicely taken!
Thank you for your very kind comments by the way.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Thanks Barb. Your stuff rocks!
Kieran Argall, 11 months ago
BB – what an awesome photo!!! I love how the bright lights in hte foreground really expose those sections against a dark background…
And mate I’d jump at a chance to photograph a wedding. Well what do you know…I’ve got another one this weekend (not OFFICIAL photographer)...great experience though.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Many thanks for the comment Kieran. If you’re planning on being in Brussels on 25 Jan, give me a ring!
Jonathan Russell, 11 months ago
excellent take on what is potentially the most cliched shot in New York :P
You almost feel the light glow emanating from Midtown.
Must be a fairly old shot, hey? No Bank of America Tower, and the Verizon building still has its old cladding.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Many thanks jgrus. I was actually hoping to avoid the cliché by not including the Chrysler building! And yes, this was a number of years ago—I hadn`t even realized the BOAT was in this view… and the Verizon has a new facade?? Makes me realize how long I`ve been away!
Rich Gale, 11 months ago
this is super there is no sine of camera shake from the wind so you did a good holding it still!!!!, great image well done.
billyboy, 11 months ago
Sheer determination Rich… there was no way I was gonna blow an opportunity like that with a bunch of blurred shots. In the end, this was the only one out of 7 that wasn’t; Thanks for liking!

Congratulations on being “Featured” today (12/20/07), BB. A little Pre-Christmas gift, eh? I haven’t been up to the top of the Empire State in 45 years and that time was during the day. This shot makes me think the night view is far better. Good job!
billyboy, 7 months ago
Thanks to everyone for whom this picture has made an impression. I’m amazed at how many people from all over the world feel nostalgia towards this awesome city.
Greg, thanks for the congrats, and Marion, I’ve been to your gallery and yes, that is a chilling shot and it’s not cause of the weather.

As others have said, “Bladerunner” was my first thought upon seeing this. :) Not only the quality of the light—the pinpoints of light and the seemingly endless city—but also the angle, and the way some buildings are silhouetted. Really a beautiful shot.

Absolutely MAGICAL…!!!
Halcyon007, 5 months ago
This is a cityscape metropolis at its finest. The richest of blacks and shiniest of whites combine in what Gotham City would revel in its darkest hours. The pinpoint accuracy of the detail on the individual skyscrapers is just awe inspiring at this low light with the pockets of light shooting up give a sense of activity and fun being had below.
Finally the inactivity of the buildings in the foreground make for a great border around the active skyscrapers.
billyboy, 5 months ago

Possibly the classiest B&W cityscape I’ve ever seen. Serious photography...
I happen to have a migraine, just had 3 teeth drilled at the dentist’s office (and
feel like I could pass out from the pain as I type) and here I sit, commenting on
this shot. Yes…I like this. :) heheh..It’d look good framed and in any office (except
for my dentist who is too cheap to give me a script of pain pills and this time I really
need them!!) or any upper class hotel or apartment. Fine work. ;)
billyboy in reply to Birgitta’s comment, 3 months ago
What’s his address? If I can inject enough morphine into him he might forget how cheap he is and just buy the damn, thing!!
