Growing Pain!

Growing Pain!

Me and my daughter Melanie in her teens, battling it out. Took the shot myself with the camera on self timer. Just told her to yell as loud as she could. It was scary how natural this came to her.

Raising a daughter, especially through her teens, is about as emotionally draining as it gets. I knew support groups were available, but I opted for the mental scars… time will tell if that was the right path!!

Thanks Heather. It’s now ten years later and she’s still doing it. They tell me it’s hormones. And that there’s no known antidote. She gets married in January to a very lucky Canadian guy and they will live in Montreal. Life here will be so peaceful. And I will miss her so deeply.

    Cheers, BB

    Yay! You’re here too!

I absolutely love this shot! I’ve long thought it’s such a shame we all (or most of us anyway) have to go through that often angry, often awkward time as teens that causes our parents so much grief, but it must be worth it when one’s children become real adults and can return to the fold, so to speak, and appreciate their parents as people. I know from this side of things how much that experience has enriched my life – I love knowing my parents as an adult.

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Thanks Casey. It’s a bit unfortunate that our children don’t really know what their parents are about until they get lives of their own… which is why we have to protect them untiul they do. We go through hell to do it, but if you can stick it out suffering only deep flesh wounds, the reward is massive. I’m just starting to appreciate that now, and thank you for acknowledging from your side. BB

  • Deborah Parkin

    Deborah Parkin

What a great shot … don’t know how I have missed this before. She is just so natural and her expression is priceless. One thing that is really clear in this image is the love you have for each other … you wouldn’t get me being this close to my family as a teenager lol!!! And yes teenagers and girls are emotionally challenging – I should know, i was both and have all of this to come :) A perfect portrait.

  • billyboy replied

Deborah, I think it’s cool that you recognized the underlying love. I think that as long as it goes full circle and Melanie can apply her experience with our relationship to bringing up her own kids, then all the emotion and turmoil will have been worth it. Hopefully this picture will help remind her. Thank you so much for looking at this below the surface!

(I feel ya, BB.) Great shot here!

  • billyboy replied

Birgitta, you are a brave woman. You are just embarking the scariest ride there is. I used to think the Wild Mouse on Coney Island was about as scary as it got (one of the cars plummeted into the sea!) till we encountered Melanie through her teens. But you’ve seen the wedding pics so you know there is hope.

If you want advice, buy a professional punching bag and gloves. You’ll need to take your frustrations out on something… I learned this early on, which is why Melanie lived long enough to marry. Thanks for confessing!

    Hey Juju!
Don`t know if being a newcomer to my pf, you don`t know the full story of my emotional rollercoaster ride with raising Melanie. But in case you don`t know, she`s now married to an amazing guy and as she now has a life, we`re cool. But it took till she was 24, so you may have a ways to go yet. Your hopeful ray of sunlight for the day is this… if it worked for us with Melanie, it will DEFINITELY work for you. You recognize that she needs her own life. You guys will be fine!

Ohhhh this is perfect! How well in encapsulates ‘those’ years when aliens suddenly come and steal your adorable child away…. I remember it so well… not that long ago… we have 5 between us and the youngest is 18… they have all been there to greater or lesser degree and some took longer to pass through it… But then they move out… it’s peaceful… but then you miss them… then they come back… and you are grateful when they go again…lol! My children all live at a distance now but I visit regularly… that way I get my fix of seeing them.. but maintain my peace…hehe… Your work is fabulous…not only is it a great image but it touches a side of us which we all recognise whether we have children or not! Great work… : )

  • billyboy replied

Jeeze… finally someone who admits… yes of course we love them to bits. But that PEACE is so addictive. And of course we take them back with open arms… and hope they get a life like REALLY soon so owe can get ours back!!!
It is so amazing to find someone who has gone through exactly the same thing with the same emotions. Don`t know if you know Melanie`s married now… it was so amazing to finally pass the torch on to an awesome guy. Raising one was such an emotional rollercoaster ride… how on EARTH did you guys manage 5?????

Thank you SO much for your appreciation of this, and cheers for the fav!!!
