Midnight Cocktail

Midnight Cocktail

I actually shot a pellet through the glass, in front of a black paper background, with the camera on timer mode. A home-made switch made with 2 sheets of metal foil triggered the flash when the pellet hit it through the glass, and so the action was frozen. Destroyed 3 glasses to make sure I got at least one good picture, and spent an hour cleaning up the kitchen. The lightning, from a thunderstorm taken out the bedroom window, was added with Photoshop as was the flashpoint above the pepper.

Many thanks Mel! It’s bedtime in Brussels now… 2 of your shots came up at random and blew me away, so I’m off to your gallery tomorrow after work as I’m sure there’s lots more treasure. L8R,BB

Thanks billyboy, hope you can find something you like….lol!

You’ll find my work is usually undisciplined and messy compared to this fine art of yours…...but sometimes I fluke it.

I sometimes also use really cheap lenses, and they can add a bit of extra interest….just not sharpness….anyway ….enjoy!

Mel, I just got back from your gallery and I am amazed by the quality and imagination there. What I like most about your work is that you are first and foremost a photographer and so you know how to bring out the best of any subject—I can see how much thought goes into each shot. Your post processing is also excellent and you use it to supplement your photographic skills rather than hide them. I’ll look forward to seeing more from you! BB

  • Empress

    Empress

Wow, guaranteed to bemuse the brain and I love knowing how you did it but what was the inspiration? Can you pinpoint that or is it just one of those things?

  • billyboy

    billyboy

Thanks Empress for commenting. The inspiration came from the glass I found in a shop and what an amazing color it was (see Before Midnight in my gallery), plus the fact I was mesmerized by the idea of capturing the smashing of a water-filled glass with a pellet on film. The lightning, lemon and pepper were afterthoughts. But let’s face it—if I was totally of sound mind, it never would have happened!

    Cheers, BB

The weird part at the pictures is :
Glass has got the same color shade and still staying on his own shoes :o))

  • clarkey

This is Awesome, Bill. With the three shots together, it’s very dramatic. The fact the glass is still standing AND retains the garnish is incredible. I’m glad you put three photos together.

  • billyboy replied

Cheers Jan, cool that you found this and thanks so much for digging it! That glass was so pretty and I hated to do that to it, but she was cheap and willingly surrendered herself. I thought that was kind of sexy, so I just went for it. I believe she forgives me and we are still soulmates and I will buy her chocolates when we meet again in the fullness of time.

  • clarkey

    clarkey

There must be an awful lot of the Irish in you, billyboy, your gift of the gab is just as good as your art! Glad you are fogiven, but, are you sure chocolates are sufficient penance for such a soul-destroying act?

  • billyboy replied

I could always make love to her. What do you think? I`d have to be ever so careful though as that glass was way thin… and maybe that would just be her way of getting revenge… maybe she hasn`t forgiven me after all… YIKES, I`m in trouble…!!

  • clarkey

    clarkey

It certainly seems like! Care is always appropriate and revenge . . . well, that may be on the cards, too! Someone else might have something to say about your proposed course of action, though.

  • Draganin

    Draganin

    Wow. Just… Wow.
Magnificent in every single possible way. Normally I don’t go for manipulations, but the effort & technical skill involved in this far outweigh the fact that it isn’t a single moment.
I really wish I had the words right now to properly express what I love & think from this shot… but I’m just sitting here going, “wow”.

  • billyboy replied

Draganin (is that to do with dragons?), you totally made my day with your comment. It’s been up for a year now and you’re the only one who seemingly got the same thrill as I did when I captured an exploding cocktail on film. I left the original for a while before I realized what an impact the lightning would have on the composition. In the end it turned out to be my fav take of all time.

Thank you SO much for your appreciation!

  • billyboy replied

    ps: Cheers for the fav!

  • Draganin

    Draganin

Yep – Means “Little Dragon” (there’s meant to be a flick on the i but I rarely bother trying to get it to work on account names)... I’m a wretched geek who’s been running D&D campaigns far too many years & it stuck.

There’s nothing more satisfying I think than pushing your normal boundaries, testing yourself & your theories, going out on that proverbial limb & getting that one shot you’re happiest with for too many reasons than words can explain.

So much of this shot (or rather, each shot it involves) shows technical knowhow & an eye for what you want. The lighting, the colour contrasts, the framing & the story. It’s all there & perfectly executed.

... I’m going to add you to my watch list if you don’t mind… & once I’ve got the time between processing my own I’ll be trying to work my way through browsing the rest of your online folio =)

  • dlmorrow

    dlmorrow

Very nice, indeed!! Well done! Question: Do you have one that isn’t so tightly cropped?

  • billyboy replied

Thanks David, and an interesting question…
The original shot was in horizontal format, so there was a bit more on the left and right of the exploding glass. I cropped a bit off the sides that I felt added very little impact, then added space of the top to make a vertical format while providing space for the lightnig.
I did actually play a lot with format and composition before ending up with this composition which I felt had the most impact.
Cheers for the comment and the interest!

  • Arletta

    Arletta

That description, while wonderful to me, pesonally, is also the perfect description of the “why” in the question “Why are most artists divorced?” or “Why can’t artists hold a relationship together?”

lol It’s alright with me, though, because I’m the sort of person who would hang a Van Gogh print behind where the towels are stacked, so that people would receive the occasional shocking joy of Surprise Art!

I would not shoot a glass, though. i’d be much more likely to fill several of them with paint and toss them against a wall.

    I’m divorced!

(lol that’s not really why, but, it sounded good!)

  • billyboy replied

    Funny you should mention that…
I once got 3 transparent glass Christmas tree balls and filled them with a mixture of milk and colored food dye. Red, white and blue. Strung them next to each other in the kitchen and did the same setup with shooting a pellet through all 3 at once. I made a picture of this amazing explosion of color bursting through and American flag!

That was years ago when I had a friend in a lab help me with some Photoshop work, and he ended up losing the nagative (yup, did it on film), so it all sadly went to waste. BUT… I still smile to myself when I think of how I cleaned up the mess late that night and realized the ktchen ceiling was covered in red, white and blue streaks. I ended up painting the ceiling at 5AM and got everything finished before my wife woke up. She never even smelled the fresh paint!!

Thank you SO much for bringing back this memory and for hiding treasures behind your stacked towels… and you`re a total gem for faving this.

And I hope your divorce brings you everything amazing you want out of life. Stay in touch!!

Hehe. You know billyboy, I’m so vague it only occurred to me tonight to go to your site. How dumb is that! Yep I’m a bit vacant (medication has a lot to answer for lol) but I loved your site and what you do so now I’ll see each time you upload :)

  • billyboy replied

  • billyboy replied

OK, I can go with sweet… though I think at the time it was more to save my life than anything else.
But you gave me the benefit of the doubt, so yer kinda sweet yersself!

    :-)

  • Katy Breen

    Katy Breen

OK Billyboy, I’ll be waiting for that one. Outside of the animal zealots wanting you in jail, it would still be worth the exciting capture for me and the kittens. :)

  • billyboy replied

Charlie, if I don`t suffer for art… it somehiw doesn`t feel as artistic as it should. So I suffer and I am happy.

Well, I may have been a day late and a dollar short (seeing that I’m commenter #503), but it’s obvious that this shot is loved by many, so another feature was in order! (can’t have too many I say) :) I’ve been wanting to have my picture taken while sitting in a giant martini glass forever…must add that to my bucket list! LOL. Cheers, S.

  • Martin McKiernan

    Martin McKiernan

Not sure without looking how old this string is. Your shot is brilliant – I guess you are as mad as a hatter in a very sane and arty way. I say artists don’t think like everyone else, my wife says artists don’t think! She must be an alien – we are the normal people, its the rest we have to feel sorry for. Your on my hit list billyboy (which, if you didn’t know, and I’m sure you do, is a brand name for a male contraceptive here in Germany!). Cheers mate!

  • billyboy replied

Funny you should say that Martin… that’s exactly how I got my name. Goes back to a Greek restaurant in Bingen. I’ll tell you the whole story in the fullness of time…

Thanks for commenting on one of my all-time faves, and for faving it yourself. And yes, the string is old as it’s one of the first I posted back in 07. Jeeze time flys past quickly!!
    Cheers back atcha!

BUT… you are wrong… if you look, I am NOT a featured artist. Alas, that accolade is reserved for people that don`t have spikey hair and don`t send their Siamese cats to the moon. (Sigh…)

    Yup, it worked!
In fact as you might have guessed, I really love it when it gets a bit tech like this and everything comes together. BUT…
it took a whole box of those glasses before I thought I might have a good take… and film is like a box of chocolates… you never know what you`re gonna get! So many times I`ve got the negs back and realized I totally missed the boat…

A brilliant image, now thats dedication trashing the kitchen for art..cheers j

  • billyboy replied

    Hey Jewd!
Yup, the trashed kitchen was a cheap price to pay for nailing the shot… even the blue shards I ‘m still picking up between my toes when I venture in with bare feet is still better than the cat vomit….
Hey, maybe I could try my hand at turning cat vomit into art…
Thanks for the comment… and watch this space!!!

wow, what can I say that has not been said yet about this shot, cocktails are a luxury and so is being able to stay up beyond midnight, at least for me, so this is one image that will challenge my brain for days to come, as I am seeing so much more than the night liquor and the fun taking this shot and hopefully you got to drink some of it, the lemon is another part of it, fresh, unique, original and very very creative and brilliant, just simply adore it and LOVE IT

  • billyboy replied

    Hey Maggie!
