My formative years were spent on a Clydesdale-powered, parafin-lit border farm, between the Lauder Moor and Galawater. I reckon it was then that I began to absorb the ever-changing aspects of our countryside and discern the myriad pulses of Nature.
As a retired landscape architect, I have been fortunate in spending the bulk of my professional life working in close collaboration with both.
This collection represents part of a lifetime’s accumulation of sketches and paintings, undertaken principally as a relaxation from the strictures of professional design. They are mainly representations of actual locations, though some have been reproduced as an amalgam of outstanding memories. The portraits are a more contemporary attempt to record personal impressions of people I have met, some long ago, others more recently. Most of the portraits have been sketched from photographs, then allowed to develop as very personal impressions recalled from our acquaintance.
Although presented earlier in 2008 as an exhibition entitled “Autumn Leaves” ( which in many senses these paintings are) I do not intend this to signify a culmination. I look forward optimistically to adding progressively to the range of subject matter and, “god speerin’”, perhaps to future exhibition opportunities.
Enjoy!
