My old film kit by Harry Purves

Here’s a blast from the past from me. I used a 120 roll film camera in the ’80’s and ’90’s and no-one ever believed me that there were twin-lens-reflex cameras that allowed you to change the lenses for different focal lengths. Well there’s an 80mm on the camera, a 55mm to the left and a 180mm on the right. Each lens is equipped with it’s own aperture control and leaf shutter and timing mechanism. There were de-tents on the aperture control lever at each stop but you could set the aperture between these points if you needed a half stop. I also had a light-powered light meter, a Sekonic L398A Deluxe III, which I have used until now because I have replaced it with a Sekonic L308S FlashMate that measures both natural light and flash – great little toy but that means I am at the mercy of the power in the battery.

I had some fun with that kit, and I carried it and the tripod all around Iceland (and no, it was the the country not the shop!). Sadly the prints I made were so big I can’t get any scanned., so here’s a digital pic of the camera itself.

Canon 450D
Canon 18-55mm lens
1/160th f11 ISO-100 speedlite flash

Inspired by my dad in visual arts and music from a very early age. He mentored me in photography, film processing and printing when I was 7 or 8 years old. He wouldn’t teach me to play guitar though so I had to teach myself, and played bass in a group while I was at University for pocket money. I took early retirement in 2009 and rekindled my passion for photography. My art is eclectic. I’ll photograph anything and everything. The world is full of images just waiting to be captured.
