This is perhaps the most photographed landmark / sea-mark in the North East of England, it’s Saint Mary’s Island at Whitely Bay. I was driving along the sea front road when I saw the most intense rainbow I’d ever seen. I decided to drive further to see if I could align it with the lighthouse and surprisingly that happened as I go to the car-park – result? However, the traffic was slow and prevented me making quick progress so when I reached the “sweet-spot” the rainbow was fading. However, a little underexposure helped the image somewhat I think.

Inspired by my dad in visual arts and music from a very early age. He mentored me in photography, film processing and printing when I was 7 or 8 years old. He wouldn’t teach me to play guitar though so I had to teach myself, and played bass in a group while I was at University for pocket money. I took early retirement in 2009 and rekindled my passion for photography. My art is eclectic. I’ll photograph anything and everything. The world is full of images just waiting to be captured.

    Hello, great shot!
Please write in your description where this was taken and RESUBMIT back in to THE WORLD
    Thanks
    Kris

  • Sorry Kris, since everyone takes pictures of St. Mary’s I was a bit blasé about its location – forgetting of course that RedBubble is International. I have updated the location in the first line of the description. Thanks.

What a glorious shot, and what a fabulously huge rainbow. Looks like the underexposure worked to your advantage to bring out the subtleties at the outside edges. -J:

  • Thanks so much Jay. You’re 100% right, this is 2 stops under from an evaluated scene metering perspective, and if it wasn’t it would just be a bright sky with a faint rainbow. A great example that you have to meter for the subject not the image as a whole.

  • Hi Barb, nice to hear from you and nice to receive such a positive comment too. I’m very pleased that you like it, and I was very fortunate to be at the scene when the rainbow was almost at it brightest. Very little post processing on this one, just a little sharpening and colour balance.
