This is part of a series of shots taken at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, North East England. The artisan is Ian, a very friendly guy who was happy to work in front of my camera. I am very grateful to him and his manager for allowing me such close access. The lighting was a challenge, a mixture of daylight and fluorescent light mixed with the glow of molten glass.
Once the shaping, sizing, and colouring of the glass is complete this stage removes any excess glass, and obviously the top will require some smoothing to remove evidence of the cut. Ian is using shears while rolling the rod to to impart a deep groove in the glass first. Shortly afterwards he will nip off the excess.
