An Ode to a Toad

Shall I compare thee to a slimy toad
Or a princess with fair skin like white snow
With golden hair, who seriously loathed
This creepy creature whose warted skin glows
From fetid oozing glands, his slime secretes.
Hiding his face in a dark gloomy lair,
All he needs is a kiss to be complete.
But the spoiled girl, with her nose in the air
Won’t consider the toad for just one kiss
Until she remembered the fairy tale
Of riches untold and handsome princes, this
One kiss from princess fair will change the pale
Slimy toad to handsome prince, with laughter
Begins their happily every after.

An Ode to a Toad by

Zoe, my 11 year old daughter is in the advanced class of Year 6 (proud mum) and has been studying Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 over the past weeks.

Her homework was to write a sonnet in iambic pentameter following the correct sonnet rhyming pattern.

This was what she came up with – I love it so much I thought I would share it :)
