HSC Mentoring

Over the past few months Daniel and I have been working with Cooper a Year 12 Photography Student with his Higher School Certificate works.

We got together about 4 months ago and came up with a concept…

To emulate four Old Master’s ArtWorks with a modern twist in each as a commentary on modern consumerism.

Daniel and I met with Cooper a number of times to shoot all the images used in the reproductions and to create the composites in Photoshop.

The final images were printed up as close to the original artworks sizes as possible (the largest being 800 × 600mm) on canvas and then framed in antique frames.

The results were fantastic!!

We will be waiting with baited breath for the marks :)

I won a camera!!

Yesterday I received a notification from the Canon – World of EOS site that my image Bejeweled had won in the latest link on the Hero Chain!!

As an avid Nikon fan it is a little disconcerting to now be a Canon owner – but I am now the proud owner of a Canon 550D Single Lens Kit.

I am not sure that I will cross over to the dark side – but it will be fun trying it out :)

Rainbows...

During our Kid’s Photography Camp this term we created rainbow collages out of everyday objects.

The kids brought in their own objects, we set up lights and the backdrop and they had to shoot the objects.

Then each of them chose the images they wanted to use in the collage, edited them in Photoshop and then put the collage together.

How clever are they?!!

Opportunity to Exhibit

Over the next couple of months we have a variety of opportunities for artists and photographers:

Red Door Creative holds a Twilight Art Market once a month along with an Exhibition – there are limited tables available for artists to sell some of their smaller artworks (eg. Cards, jewelry, matted prints). The markets are a fabulous event with live music, art demonstrations and lots of laughter and fun. They are a great opportunity to network and meet new people.

Red Door also holds regular themed exhibitions and we are always looking for artists and photographers to exhibit their works.

Put the following dates in your diaries :

We are looking for artists to exhibit or participate. We are looking for ALL forms of art the more diverse the better – we have one artist exhibiting her handmade corsets :)

The exhibition will open on Friday 26th March at 7.30pm with live music, a Burlesque/Pole Dancer Dancer, and an art demonstration. The Exhibition will then run 10 – 4pm Saturday and 10 – 2pm Sunday, with art to be picked up from 2-4pm on Sunday.

All artworks exhibited are required to be for sale with a 25% commission taken if sold.

Tutorial - Painting with Light

There a many different ways to photograph light trails and painting with light, the following tutorial is what worked for us at the Snapshots meet. You can also find this tutorial in the Red Door Creative Group you can also enter your awesome images in the Painting with Light Challenge.

There are two very different methods you can use when painting with light.

  1. Painting portions of the subject with diffuse light
Here you paint around your subject, or on your subject to expose desired parts (eg. Face), while ensuring that the torch faces away from the camera and directly towards the subject. You can get quite close to the subject for a more intense light, or move back for a softer light. This technique will give your object a beautiful glow.

Our second Art Market went off as well as the Christmas one did – despite the deluge of rain.

We had free hand massages, enjoyed music from Tommy and Daniel, watched Liz create gorgeous jewellery and enjoyed all the art :)
