Selling Images to Magazines

Hi!

I have recently taken some awesome shots of guys doing extreme things on bikes. (My husband is a BMX rider and trainer)

I have looked around the web and being in the BMX scene have seen a few mags and shots that other photographers have taken and my shots seem to be just as good.

I was wondering whether anyone had some tips as to how to go about selling my images to magazines/organisations for use?

I am very new at all this so would welcome any advice.

Thanks.

Put together a disc of photo’s numbered with a thumb nail sheet and cv. Make the images jpg and only your best shots I think they will have a going rate they pay. I’m looking to do the same thing with mags and newspapers , call them and find out who is photo dept editor’s name and where to send them.

I did a writing course last year online and they recommended a book called th Australian Writers Marketplace. I purchased the book but it can be borrowed from your local library and it lists all of the magazines published in Aus and NZ. I then emailed ones that I thought my photos were appropriate for and actually got 2 of my images published in a NZ pet magazine! It cost me $49.95 from Angus and Robinson but I made that and more!Hope this helps.Rachael

Another avenue to look at is what I used to be involved with…
I was a contracted photographer for “Power Boat” magazine, and the publishers would reimburse me for the cost of the 35mm film. I would then go to the race meetings and take the action shots I wanted. I would then send the undiveloped film to the magazine, who would take what they wanted for processing, but I would always own the copywright.
So I would make money from the sale of a specific shot, then sell it privately on top of that again. I could make as much as $300:00 for one photo. One of which made page.3. of the Melbourne Herald as an action shot, and then sold privately to members of the Melbourne Speedboat Club as well.
But you would have to contact the BMX Magazines to find out if they wanted you to be one of the photographers and therefor you would have to have a cv as ‘mugshot’ has suggested, and be able to attend the race meetings as well…....
    Best of luck.
