A Portrait
I did a Portrait shoot last weekend for a client and I would like your honest opinion on this shot.
It was a spur of the moment shot as I turned around and she was sitting there smiling – it was perfect.
The lighting was natural light through a window and it gave her this incredible soft effect. I really like the result but was concerned that it was too bright.
What do you think…

I really like the angle Sarah, can you warm the image a little? :)
Sarah Moore replied
I probably could!

The crucial question probably is, does she like it?! One of the variations I’d like to see is a bit of a crop and a vintage treatment – it already is halfway there!!!
Sarah Moore replied
crop to where and do you mean sepia?
Rosalie Dale IPA
I’m tempted to say crop to ?armpit? or just below the neck of her shirt (roll and pull your screen up till it covers top and bottom a bit!!) and no, a vintage look is just feathery paler creamy look – actually I have a couple of vintage actions but it may be too much on this one as you already have some of the elements happening … something to minimise the washed out shirt and focus on the face … you are creative, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of variations!!!!

Sarah, the angle is great just need to crop closer to the top of her head. Don’t crop under the armpit (Sorry Rosalie) then it would be just a head shot. I would however add some more contrast in PS between 15 – 20 on the scale. This will bring out her blue eyes. I think it’s a little pale as she is wearing a white T andthe background is almost white as well. Everything else is fine and really I like the angle. Hope that helps you.

Lovely portrait of this “Diana” look alike lady.Yes nice unusual angle

crop above the head up a little in the contrast not 2 much and in the background of the wall i would play with sum textures and maybe warm the textures up as not to lose the blue in her eyes
this will make her stand out more of her background, she seems as one with her background at the moment-play! it’s a great shot to work with!!

I would blur the background or change it to put more emphasis on the face.

Beautiful.

She’s very beautiful, and you have captured the quality of an eager young woman surveying the world, a world that excites her. And your work is universally superb. But you asked about the brightness, and in that regard, it has an airbrushed, ultra perfect look. She then becomes a prototype or image of some thing. I believe that approach to faces, unless it’s what you want here, washes out some of the humanity of the subject, the subject’s character. But then that is my personal interest with painting, and may not be what interests you. And I have no doubt you’ve taken a photograph she’ll love.

Great angle, love the softness, but yes definitely needs cropping above the head for a more intimate and balanced feel, and a bit more contrast.

it’s excellent. the eyes are bright and the smile is alive. all a good portrait should be.
certainly you could do lots of things to it, but you can’t make it better, just different.

Really nice, you often find the spur (of the moment) shots turn out better than the ones you spent hours setting up! As usual, its beautiful.

She’s a nice subject, and the soft effect is pleasing, but I’d like to have seen it shot from a lower angle. This would also remove the diagonal line that intersects with her head. She has great eyes and a nice smile, and IMO, these need to be more visible.
