Petenia Splendida (Red Bay Snook) by

“To appreciate the true splendour of this fish, see extra large version here”: http://www.bidkev.com/petenia-splendida.php

This fish is found in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico, inhabiting lakes as well as rivers.

Unlike mosr New World Cichlids, this fish is not overly aggressive except at spawning time. It does though, have a large protrusible mouth that allows it to devour anything half it’s size.

Growing as it does to 20 ins, it should not be kept with other fish less than 10ins.

The one illustrated was nicknamed by my son, “Al” (Capone) due to the scarred face inflicted during a dispute with another male, over a female at spawning time.

Fabulous capture of this lovely fish ‘Al’
Never seen one of these before – absolutely stunning!

  • Thanks Gary. No, I’d never seen one till I came to Oz. Their mouth extends like a bellows…it’s amzing what they can swallow.
