Angry Sea

View across the sea towards Central Pier Blackpool UK, shot from the North Pier when the storm was breaking and the light was striking the water. The ferris wheel is mounted on the pier and the Pepsi Max Big One roller Coaster, once the highest in the world can be seen in the distance at Blackpool Pleasure beach.

One of a sequence that has had no manipulation in colour. This is how the shot came back from the printers…….(loss of) colour due to leaving the film on the dashboard of the car in full sunlight prior to developing.

this is a fantastic shot – action all round – love the way the wheel is in the centre and beautiful colour too

Thank you Deborah. I was surprised at how the pic turned out when processed. It was a very windy and rainy day and everything looked grey until the sun peaked through. There’s a lot more blue there, than my eye saw at the time.

I love the composition, did you wait for the right wave or was it just luck!!!!!, the central position of the wheel I think balances this image very well.
Top work well done all the best from the cloudy overcast wet uk.
    Rich.

Hi Rich. Mate, there’s some good shots to be taken there in a strong Westerly. The sea wall by the pier is over 30ft high and concave towards the top. This has the effect of throwing the wave backwards as it hits the wall. Waves such as this one here are caused by an oncoming wave hitting one that is being thrown back. Very spectacular, but not kind to your gear, which is why I always used the old Zenit as opposed to the EOS :-)

Another great shot! Despite the storms Blackpool had its charms. The wave in the foreground certainly was nothing unusual… do you remember the policemen loosing their lives trying to rescue someone, I think who had got into difficulties trying to rescue a dog?

  • bidkev

    Thanks nb.

Yes, I remember that tragic day so well. The man had gone in to rescue his dog and got into difficulties. Two policemen and a policewoman lost their lives attempting to rescue him. Another policeman was saved only because of the cold water cooling his body temperature down to where he was in “suspended animation.” The rope from the life belt thrown to him, tangled round his neck as he was hauled up the sea wall, from the water but paramedics saved him.

There has been 10 drownings at the same spot since, if I remember correctly, again, two of them caused by dog rescue.

On the day the policemen died, I was actually in the vicinity fishing. The water was only waist deep but the undertow from the waves being thrown back by the convex sea wall, kept on knocking them off their feet, preventing them from reaching the steps….........a very sad day, and no doubt there will be some more, as folk continue to gamble with nature :’-(

I am sitting here mesmerized…we just had a hurricane here in Texas and it pretty much destroyed Galveston Island…Photogs weren’t able to get in until after the storm, so this has such special meaning for me and I’m glued to the monitor at the spectacle you have captured!!

  • bidkev replied

Thanks Wayne. Yeah, I know how you feel. The bureau has just announced that it’s gonna be a bad cyclone season here in Qld Oz. Thanks for visiting mate….......this is one of a series.hope you enjoy ‘em all.
