The sun shone through the living room window. I grabbed my coat, birdfood and camera, opened the main door of our apartment and closed it with a bang. The weather was too good to miss and I was a lady with a mission. Our shared backyard is a haven for wildlife with fir trees, willows and rowans’ crowded in a tiny plot of land. This plot of land has become an adventure playground for squirrels, foxes and many varieties of birds. Hanging on the edge of the branches are birdhouses usually filled with nuts and dry bread from the elderly widower downstairs.I walked quietly into the backyard and emptied my bag of crusts and a baby squirrel appeared from under the trees. A cat climbed onto the nearby garages and yawned, quite unperturbed by the squirrel although the sound of the birds singing and sight of the feathers drew its attention. The adult squirrels arrived and scampered away with the nuts. When I made my way to a small hideaway at the other end of the backyard and within minutes the crusts had been devoured. Magpies, blackbirds and pigeons all full to bursting with very little left for the chaffinches. No snaps taken there and as the sun was still shining I hopped on a bus into the city.
