An old experiment (early 1980s) using a Canon AV-1 camera and a Nikon 500mm/8 Mirror lens. The lens was set out-of-focus then slowly focused to infinity. The the whole set-up (on the tripod) was slowly turned to get the ‘tails’. Exposure time was not recorded as it was on Aperture priority)

Location: Hollywood, California, shot from the Hollywood Hills.

This is wonderful. I don’t understand the technicalities, but I DO understand the impact. A really stunning image.

  • Thanks Jes! To most people it looks out-of-focus but it was intentionally done that way. This was a scan from an old print, by the way.

I used to have an AV-1, miss that camera, understood it perfectly, still struggling with the manual settings on my DSLR, tend to use it on auto and I keep botching the manual settings, give me rings to turn any day!

Magnificent use of the donuts :) Now I’m going to have to look for a mirror lens to try some shots. Thanks Frank!

  • No worries Mel. Now I’m waiting to see what masterpiece you can come up with this idea :)

I’ve been wanting to play with a mirror lens for awhile now, nearly got to use one a year ago, but the chance slipped by and I missed it…lucky I can be patient about some things :)

  • The difference between the best and the cheap is huge, so choose the best. The Nikkor can be adapter to Canon (manual focus anyway)
