The Golden eagle is a native raptor in southern Arizona, breeding in the mountains around Tucson. A large bird, with a body colored dark brown and golden brown on the head. The feet are yellow, while the legs are feathered. When diving for a kill, the Golden eagle can fly up to 120 mph.
The Golden eagle is not shy about selecting prey larger than it is, and has been known to attack animals greater than 100 pounds. A long lens is advisable.
The Golden eagle is a protected bird, so if you find a feather it is a good idea just to leave it alone, as possession is illegal.
