oh my gosh, barbara… thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!!
you are so awesome…. i still am not bold enough do delete most of the information on an image like you to create a stencil…. i’m gonna learn so much from this… you rock dear friend… xxx
    p.s. love that mole you kept… :P

  • Barbara Glatzeder replied

Hahaha, glad you like it – it was just a matter of time (it’s not like I didn’t try pencil you, but the stencil version worked out muuuch better) ... try it, it’s sometimes tedious, layers and stuff, but it’s fun. If I finally got my mind around vector I’d probably have crisper images, but the flow of the paintbrush on the paper is quite relaxing …

    mimi yoon

like it… i love it… and would love to see the pencil version too… :P
someone told me to do live trace in illustrator yesterday, but i want to be able to do it like you… freehand… and yes most definitely, the flow of the paintbrush… what true artist can deny…. thank you so much again, barbara… :D xxx

  • Barbara Glatzeder replied

Oh, I ripped up the pencil version, it was going to be ‘wo-man and machine’, you and the Nikon, hehe … perhaps I’ll have another go … live trace? Never heard of it – my preps are mostly digital though, but there’s always something I want to (and do!!) adapt or adjust etc., and the sweep of the brush leads me :-))

so beautifully said, friend… adapt or adjust etc., and the sweep of the brush leads me live trace is a function in illustrator that creates stencil look for you which i have never tried… i sometimes use cutout in photoshop… BUT i love your way much better… and yes, please give it another go… when you feel like~ :D

  • Barbara Glatzeder replied

I’ve never worked with functions/filters, I don’t have Photoshop or Illustrator – I mainly up the contrast and that shows me the direction, but more often than not one setting alone does not ‘work’ for the entire image, so it’s back to manual labour and human eyes … but I’ve been thinking, real stencils, they must be hard, to have all the pieces linked together so the thing doesn’t come apart when you lift it ..!! lol … I’ll see about than pencil drawing, once I’ve got my courage back ;-)

I thought it looked familiar too.. That is definitely a testimonial on how well this was done!

It would be so fun to make a spray paint stencil template out of this and replace ugly graffiti with a beautiful one. ;-)

  • Barbara Glatzeder replied

Thanks so much!! Shall we ask Mimi if she minds? hahahaha

The fact I recognised Mimi (and I haven’t been on RB long) shows how good a job you’ve done on this – retaining a likeness in stark black & white is difficult. I went through a spell of doing alot of these some years back; it’s fun following the lines you create as you never quite know how it’s going to turn out.

  • Barbara Glatzeder replied

Exactly :)) you never know where it’s going to take you, and likenesses, well … thanks ever so much! :))
